Nick Blakey
Nick Blakey is a prodigious talent with a laser-sharp left boot, an outstanding overhead ability and searing pace. The QBE Sydney Swans Academy product booted 21 goals in 19 games in a brilliant debut season en route to winning the club’s 2019 Rising Star award, and while he added a lively element to the forward line last year, he’s likely to play on a wing or in the midfield in 2020. Nick is the son of former Fitzroy and North Melbourne champion John Blakey, who’s had a variety of roles on the Swans’ coaching panel since 2006.

Nick Blakey
DOB: 27 February 2000
DEBUT: 2019
DRAFT: #10, 2018 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: University Of NSW-Eastern Suburbs (NSW)

7 years sounds long, but how long does it sound when they say it's until the end of 2031? It's like he's gonna be playing against Blade Runners, or some draft hopefuls might miss out because they're getting sent back to try to protect John Connor.

Yeah maybe the gap between good and bad has reduced

between the tigers and blues games was some ordinary footy though .

I'm just not a fan of signing anyone for that long

i think that was as much to do with team playing crap, or at least playing as if gutted ... which we were
and even then i'd have put blakey among our better (i won't say "best") players most weeks, certainly for effort
i think "inconsistent" is harsh ...
fantastic that he's putting his career in sydney's hands (the swans, not sweeney)

He's not just any half back flanker though let's be honest.

Between the height to mark, the leg speed to break lines, and the class to hit targets, you wear the potential inconsistency to keep a player possessing that amount of weapons on the list.

No reason he also can't work on his inconsistency either. Only just turned 23 so has all his best years ahead of him.

exactly
he's unique

Happy he signed don't get me wrong

7 years , effectively 8 more is a long time

He's irregularly inconsistent.

I'd argue every player on our list is 'irregularly' inconsistent and it has much more to do with opposition and team performance than anything inherently wrong in Blakey or any other individual player. If we had players who played consistently at the peak of their game they'd probably win the Brownlow or Coleman. Maybe that was your point though!

Too many.
Way too many.
I love that he wants to stay but what happens if this week his has a Tom McCartin style type concussion?

Then he 'retires' early. Not sure why everyone gets bent over this, the rules are in place.

Yeah extreme issues are fine

What if he just breaks down and misses chunks at a time is the risk with a long deal , not the extreme career ending.

Worse he just is crap in 3 years and stuck with him (less likely)

We're just scratching the surface with his potential. If he was playing for a Victorian team, they'd say he's one of the next big players. A superstar. I don't think their is anyone with his skillset, height & athleticism. We all know he's got elite acceleration & speed but his jumping ability is underrated. A great leap on him too.

I don't really see an issue with the length of contract, sure it's long, but I think the risk of him underperforming or having a serious injury (that is career ending) is a very small one. And even if a player were to get injured, it's not as if we instantly get them off our books and replace them (see Rohan, Naismith & Reid as examples of players who have sustained injuries but were still retained). So unless he were to regress to being a useless player, I don't see a major issue in signing him for an extended period. He's already proven to be a quality player and will only get better.

But, but, but we might have a zombie apocalypse tomorrow and he turns into a zombie lizard and then where would our list be 😱

You lost interest in the AFL mate?

No, just tongue in cheek after a comment on the previous page.

I think all of his attributes make him the perfect half back, I don't think every player needs to have an inevitable "move to the middle" to get the best out of them. I could be wrong and he could prove to be a gun on the wing, but I don't think his frame would ever see him become a bull through the middle like a Cripps or someone, so think he's wasted there.
