Nick Blakey
Nick Blakey is a prodigious talent with a laser-sharp left boot, an outstanding overhead ability and searing pace. The QBE Sydney Swans Academy product booted 21 goals in 19 games in a brilliant debut season en route to winning the club’s 2019 Rising Star award, and while he added a lively element to the forward line last year, he’s likely to play on a wing or in the midfield in 2020. Nick is the son of former Fitzroy and North Melbourne champion John Blakey, who’s had a variety of roles on the Swans’ coaching panel since 2006.

Nick Blakey
DOB: 27 February 2000

Stiff to miss out on AA.

Not really, was behind a few in the defence positions, and probably didn't have enough standout games to get ahead of the running HB's. Squad selection is perfect and a great accolade.

if blakey played for a victorian team, say, essendon, carlton or collingwood, the media would drool over him every second week ... he would be regarded as a star of the league, particularly with his dad's status as a victorian cult hero
maybe not daicos level but his name would've been up in lights for the past two seasons

He would've surpassed daicos, especially with his marketability. Gun cult hero. We've got a few characters in our team, Juzzy is another one

Love watching the Liz. Hope he bulks up a bit (Kennedy can help here). Imagine another 10kg of muscle tearing it up with his pace-virtually unstoppable

If he bulks up he'll sacrifice his speed. Sorta like Michael Jordan bulking up in 1991 sacrificed his dynamic dunking.

Agree. I think he's probably pretty close to his ideal weight. Maybe a little more muscle but not 10kg worth.

He'll never be able to take on big gorilla forwards, but he's rapidly improved his positioning and body work since moving back. If that continues he'll be able to further improve his defensive work without sacrificing speed or agility.

Agree, he needs to add whipcord, not bulk. Another season of improvement should see him jump from the AA squad to the team.

I’m bumping this thread. Not enough appreciation going on this pre season for the Liz. Cmon swans board, let’s show our love for the excitement machine that is Nick Blakey.

As per the requested lovefest above, I'll add my two cents.

I think the reason I love Blakey is that he's not just an excitement machine. At his best he is. He's wildly entertaining and awesome to watch, doing things no one else on the ground - or even in the competition - can do.

But at his worst, he can still be good. Take his game the other night. No flash, nothing special. Just the hard stuff. He's showtime when he wants to be and blue collar when he needs to be. You don't find that combination in many players.
