Luke Parker
Luke Parker has plenty of football ahead and has already compiled a resume packed with impressive achievements. Since landing at the Sydney Swans via the 2010 AFL Draft, he has won a 2012 premiership medal, earned All Australian selection and won two Bob Skilton medals. In 2015, he was added to the club’s leadership group at the age of just 22, and has led the team as a co-captain alongside Josh Kennedy and Dane Rampe since 2019. While Parker is among the league’s elite midfielders, his strong marking and expert game awareness make him a genuine threat when rotating through the forward line.

Luke Parker

The very definition of a club legend.

He's given his heart and soul to the club and has attacked the contest for a decade to the detriment of his body. Has worked on his game to turn himself from a hatchet man to a reliable set shot, and has turned down constant overtures from big VIC clubs to stick with the Swans.

None of that should guarantee you a game, but if anyone deserves their supporters to stick fat through a lean trot, it's this bloke.

People complaining about Parker's game are cooked. Threw his body on the line and got a lot of hard balls. Played 1 on 1 with Mitchell most of the match and kept his influence low. You'd back his performance in every week if he brings that
Don't think anyone doubts effort, it's his deplorable disposal, the hand passes to ground, poor decision making, looping hack kicks.

The bloke tries his guts out, unfortunately it takes more than that in today's footy

12 contested disposals (2nd most for the day) at 65% disposal efficiency. That's a good return for an inside mid.

Pies pressure was immense, if the rest of the mids played like Parker we would have thumped the Pies

You can get stats to say anything you want. The eye test is a different story. He consistently puts teammates under pressure. For some reason whenever he has a free or a mark, and he takes one step back and puts himself under pressure and either has to hit the clouds with the kick to get it over the man on the mark or he hand passes to someone feet.

I'd much prefer him play as a forward from now on. He's still a great mark and I trust him more than anyone else with a set shot. But he's far too slow for the mids now and his decision making is lacking

Counted three times in the third quarter alone he handballed it straight to Collingwood in the corridor, resulting in inside 50's/shots on goal.

Yeah that was painful - scores were level at the time. Kept handshaking to space or opposition. Don’t really understand what he was thinking. Would love to ask him

Same with Giants game in the last quarter - he dived on a lose ball without trying to release and Tom green dived on him and got the free which was the only outcome that was ever going to happen. Just don’t understand what he is thinking in these moments

They’re not the spectacular brain explosions of Pete but they do puzzle me. They happen in general play during contested footy so never get commentated on or mentioned

I think too much is being asked of him, our other mids haven't been able to hit form and with Mills being moved around the ground Parker is the sole bull in the mids with little support.

I'm starting to see coaching as a bit of a failure atm. Including expecting to be able to move Mills to defence and think Parker can shoulder the entire load.

Horse continually talks about pressure at the contest, but then moves a key piece from the coalface and plonks him in defence where the ball is coming in at a hundred miles an hour because we're getting pantsed in the middle. I don't see how that was ever going to work as a tactic.

Parker asks too much of others

My point is that he doesn't have the time or space to ask given he isn't given much support doing the grunt work. I know he's not the cleanest ball user, but if he had a JPK or t.mitchell supporting him he wouldn't need to hack kick half as much.

But once again, it comes down to the coaches not being able to develop a strategy to mask our deficiencies, instead they park his most likely support in the backline.

Throw Parker, Mills and rowbottom ilat the coalface and have the likes of Warner, papley and heck, even mcinerney & blakey run through there to offer some speed.

We need a different mix. We need to change things up and I may not have the answer. But I sure as hell know moving Mills to the backline ISN'T the answer.

In defence of Longmire, our backline has been decimated, it may have been robbing Peter to pay Paul but I don't think he had too many other options. I think he thought, like the rest of us, that the other mids could rise to cover the loss, alas they could not.
This is the first season since Mills moved into the midfield that he has spent any significant amount of time in the backline.

That's fair
