In 2 years our best midfield set up will be LDU, Wardlaw and Phillips/Simpkin imo.

Simpkin right there too and probably starting on a forward flank, rotating into mid - he and Phillips could just swap in those roles. Powell unlucky.

We've got an embarrassment of riches in the midfield.

I think Simpkin will end up on a wing once Phillips, Wardlaw, Powell, etc develop more.

I’ve seen enough to make me worried. Don't see how we can play both him and Cunners in the same midfield as it makes us too slow in there. The thing i dont see with Will is his athletic profile or versatility. Hes small, not particularly good endurance, quick or agile. Without those qualities, i cant see him playing much of a role in the forward or backline.

He has good skills and is a diligent player, so I could see him making it as a small inside mid. Maybe an Andrew Swallow type. And as good as Spitta was, I couldn’t see a player like him getting many games in our midfield in a couple of years.

With the embarrassment of riches we have in the middle, would be surprised to see Will traded in a few years for more opportunity elsewhere.

By the time Phillips is in his prime Cunnington will have retired.

Unfortunately like so many of our mids, he lacks versatility. So he needs high CBA’s to be effective. Is he going to get them? Clarko said when warlord gets in, he‘s going straight to the coalface. Where does this leave Will?
We have Cunnington and Greenwood at the tail end leaving LDU, Simpkin, Philips, Powell, and Wardlaw.

A 5 man midfield rotation seems similar to what the Lions, Dogs, Pies of this world seem to have.

If anything, it leaves some challenges when selecting best available with 2 1st rounders coming.

The bottom line is, Phillips will need to have absolutely exceptional ball use, if he is going to make it at his size & speed. And by "exceptional" I'm talking the Sam Mitchell, Scott Pendles type ball use. It's the reality of the situation.
The AFL Tracker had Will Philips at 32.6km/hr max speed. That was faster than any player in the blue and white stripes. It is also faster than what Charlie Cameron did in this round (as a marker against someone with serious wheels).

I don't think it is beyond the scope of reality to see WillPhil develop into something that looks like Lachie Neale.

Yep, I've seen enough to make me excited.

It’s amazing how perception gets imprinted on someone’s mind and then nothing they see can shake it.

Against the hawks he took that contested mark in the middle of the ground in the last quarter, then carried it 25-30 metres before choosing a poor handball option. The Accurate One (don’t know how to tag) said something along the lines of “I thought my screen froze he moved so slow” when in reality not one hawthorn player made up ground on him.

Imagine when he’s actually fit to play

There is immediate reaction quick
There is first 5 yards quick
There is running to catch a bloke
and there is running all day

Which is why it gets very confusing very quickly if you call him slow
I think a lot of us expected Phillips to be quicker around the ground , he seems to sort of motor along without a full on sprint
But catching those guys showed serious acceleration

and Zurhaar is going OK
And TT was playing good footy in the middle before his ego exploded

That's been spinning me out since I joined this board.

There was a kick on Friday where he lowered the ball to a dangerous spot.

It was mint

That will open up so many defences

Thought it was his best game at the level thus far. Shoulda ended up with 18 and 2 goals. Watching the replay he fed LDU and Jy quite a few times and had an impact up forward.

He will be a slow burn whilst he develops his tank, but really good bounce back after a disappointing week against the Hawks.
In terms of tank it’s more afl intensity tank

That just takes games

Yeah, both. Definitely intensity which will come with experience. His contest to contest work will improve as well with time.

I thought we saw how clean he can be on Friday. It’s a real centre piece of his game at u18 level and it was on display for periods on Friday.

Finished with 5 clearances.
