Just watched his extended highlights of the game on AFL app - looked great until the fourth quarter

Just rewatched the replay for the first time, hasn’t put a foot wrong up to half time.

One thing that’s slightly related but a bit wider of scope, and as the bath goldy got from reeves and meek. Reeves particularly. And to make matters worse, the Greenwood ruck option got toyed with in the second qrt. Didn’t help our mids at all.

true, but it's Goldy or bust for a while yet. Hamish Free is not the answer - I haven't seen too many professional footballers where the word 'football' is better separated into its component parts, foot and ball, and in Hamish's case, they don't often go together well

Had it 5 years ago - still not 100%.

This makes sense. He missed a whole YEAR of footy with this thing. He still had a more than serviceable game yesterday. I am firmly on the WiPhi train. He will definitely make it, and he is still a few years behind Jy and LDU in development terms.

Next pre-season he needs to run himself into the ground. The same way Jy did in his third pre-season.
ina
The repeat sprints/efforts that he showed in juniors just aren’t quite there yet because his tank is holding him back.

His pre-season was lauded all around the club. He put the time and effort in. He can't be faulted on that score. Balancing out track work to rebuild his stamina and repeat sprint efforts alongside building core strength, and all while taking care not to overtrain and invite the dreaded OP.

I’m not critiquing him on that front, he is the ultimate professional. But the only thing holding him back is his tank at this stage.

It's tricky though, isn't it? Especially for someone whose development hit such a hurdle through reasons beyond his control. He needs to recapture his endurance and speed, but he also needs to build his core strength to compete with men like Cripps and Bontempelli who are substantially bigger than him. Quickly developing speed and endurance as well as core strength and size don't necessarily go together. He will get there, it will just take time and patience. I am pleased that Clarko is backing him in, along with a few others whose form may be a little up and down.

I Believe In You GIF

Quietly building with an underrated game yesterday.

Second most clearances for us yesterday (5) behind Jy (6) and third highest from both sides for the game.

Had 3 centre bounce clearances from just 10 attendances.
Couldn't believe some of the stuff I was reading on the GDT about him - some of the worst stuff I've read on this board.

He played basically the whole game as a half-forward, a role he's not had to play much in his career, and had it 17 times. He also kicked a goal and was equal 2nd in tackles for our side with 4.

From a season point of view, only 3 players are ahead of him for pressure points (Simpkin, Turner and Shiels).

The rubbish the media's been saying about him for years is creeping into the minds of many North fans who lack any patience.

You'd think a lot of us would learn to be patient with young top picks who have had injury interrupted starts to their career...

Doesn’t waste a possession- probably out of the mids we have wilphi and Powell are best at hitting a target.
Another preseason and he’ll be a gem

Been running some numbers today and thought I would compare Will and Powelly, given the praise that one deservedly gets and the criticism often directed at the other.

Averages, rounded up where it doesn't make a difference

Time on ground
Will - 67%
Tom - 75%

Effective disposals
Will - 13
Tom - 14

Contested possessions
Will - 10
Tom - 6

Clearances
Will - 3.67
Tom - 2.25

Pressure acts
Will - 16
Tom - 18

Conclusion - for someone with nearly half as many games as one of our more talented young mids, he's doing fine. Despite being a bit smaller, he's strong for his size as shown by the contested possessions differential.

Will is a much better kick, but Powell is a jet on the handball.
Yeah I first noticed wilphi as 17yr old when watching Rowell/ Anderson and he was practically matching their outputs then.
You don’t lose that sort of talent - build that tank and watch out
