Go back pre-Sandpaper, Smith is getting his back foot across and punching that behind point, frequently for 4. He had two get out of jail shots; the flick across the line, and that back foot punch; go too straight he works you through midwicket/square leg, get too wide outside off he's stroking you through extra cover if it's full or punching you through backward point/wide third for 4. You couldn't stop him scoring for any amount of time, because he was more patient than you were; you'd go too short, straight, full or wide, and your margin for error was on a good length wide of the stumps. Now, that punch has abandoned him; he's not getting any runs through that part of the ground; short of a full length, he doesn't score on the off side of the ground behind point. When he's struggling, you can just starve him of runs by bowling back a length outside off.
Makes me wonder what's going on behind the scenes, what he's doing with the coaches and what they're saying to him. It'd be something you'd pick up using scoring analytics, you would thing.
