Dylan Stephens
The Sydney Swans used their first pick five since Jarrad McVeigh in 2002 to lock in a talented midfielder from South Australian club Norwood at the 2019 AFL Draft. Dylan Stephens is a prolific ball-winner and creative user of the footy by hand and foot. He played predominantly on a wing in the early matches of the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships before starring on the inside in the final match, gathering 33 disposals in a best-on-ground performance. A penetrating left-footer, he averaged 23.8 disposals and 4.8 tackles across the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships and was rewarded with All Australian honours. He also played some excellent football at senior level with Norwood, averaging 18.2 disposals and 4.6 tackles in 12 matches. Stephens enjoyed a breakout season for the Bloods in 2020 with a memorable AFL debut in Round 6 against Richmond alongside fellow debutant, Chad Warner. Stephens finished the campaign with eight appearances, averaging 12.5 disposals and 3.4 marks per game, while also kicking two goals.

Dylan Stephens
DOB: 08 January 2001
DEBUT: 2020
DRAFT: #5, 2019 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Red Cliffs (Vic)/Walkerville (SA)/St Peter's College (SA)/Norwood (SANFL)

his playing wieght was listed around 80kg. If you think you've found an exception to a general claim you can spend a few minutes on Google checking if it's really there before posting.

Sure there may be some exceptions, but as a general claim "sub 70 kilo teenage players aren't physically developed enough to dominate at the elite level of one of the most physically demanding games on the planet" seems a pretty safe position to take.
He’s listed as 80 in his final year of footy.

Listed at 78.9kg in his pre-draft profile.

So what point are you making? Does the general claim im making that sub 70 kilo players generally don't have the athletic qualities needed to win the ball in the centre a accelerate away from the pack suffer in any way because of the existence of Cyril rioli and his career as an 80 odd kilo forward?

What you've done here is irrelevantly reference a player whose vibe might contradict an already general claim. Turns out Cyril never players at under 70 kilos and it doesn't contradict it at all. Something you could have checked yourself before posting.

Im not saying Stephens will never be capable of replicating his SANFL form at the elite level, just that he will need some physical development first.

Absolutely no idea what you are hoping to add to that conversation by mentioning rioli.

He's listed at 78kg on Swans website.. That was his weight towards the end of pre-season. Wouldn't be surprised if hes put on another couple of kgs.
Running is his biggest asset. Speed and endurance. In past years he got pushed off the ball way to easy, but things are turning. That 'dangerous' tackle he laid a couple of weeks ago was unreal and to finish off Freo with a goal earned him the 2nd biggest congrats from Horse (after Warner) when the players left the field.
Hes going good, improving week to week. Hope he continues

This is his longest streak of senior games in his career- 4, so first time he has had a month uninterrupted basically.

Has tackled well, runs hard, starting to get some goals, still does not get a lot of the ball, but lot of work goes unrewarded.

I thought he was sort out as a target a bit more v Freo, maybe team mates getting trust in him, (have no stats to support this was a gut feeling).

Tend to hope pick 5 mid will b a gun quickly, he is not, but showing a bit the more he plays imo.

Yep he's getting there physically and that's why he's starting to look more at home

I brought him up as 67 because the question was why can't he reproduce his SANFL form in the AFL so I was pointing out he could be one of the better athletes on the field at that size in the SANFL but the AFL is another question.

At the Lions game I couldn't help but notice how much more solid their players were, in both ressies and seniors, and that they were very happy to go hard into contact. Our younger, lighter (looking) and probably softer players found it pretty hard to deal with. Melbourne are similar I think, Geelong too. Harder.
When we drafted Ling and Stoddart I saw them in ressies and thought "gee I wish they were a bit bigger". Ling wasn't too bad but Stoddart, like Dyl early on, got pushed around a lot. I'm a bit concerned about Corey and Rankin too for the same reason. They're good footy players but will they be big enough?
Dyl looks to be getting there.

What do you mean 67 ?

Nenof the great things about Aussie rules is thatany body type can play but it does take a level of physical development. Even Caleb Daniel is a unit. Surees gonna get pushed off the ball by buddy but I thpart the confidence that young players need to develop is that they can tackle, and wear a tackle, from anyone and it takes a few years to get there.

I think he's no longer playing like "the kid" of the team - over-eager to impress, in two minds constantly, biting off more than he can chew - and is now playing like just a member of the team. Where he doesn't need to star, doesn't need to put a highlights reel together, doesn't need to be outstanding just to hold his spot, doesn't need to capitulate just because he makes an error or two. Just keeping it simple and doing enough to remain in the team.

The ultimate irony of this approach and change in mentality is that it actually opens up so many more opportunities for him to be more than that. Nailing the basics and everything else following on from it.

He's working hard with his running and his reward is getting his hands on the ball a lot. He's getting his hands on the ball more and his reward is playing more comfortable and instinctive. He's playing more comfortable and instinctive and his reward is more of his flair coming out, like classy goals and clever side steps. The ball is rolling now - he belongs.
