Dylan Stephens
The Sydney Swans used their first pick five since Jarrad McVeigh in 2002 to lock in a talented midfielder from South Australian club Norwood at the 2019 AFL Draft. Dylan Stephens is a prolific ball-winner and creative user of the footy by hand and foot. He played predominantly on a wing in the early matches of the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships before starring on the inside in the final match, gathering 33 disposals in a best-on-ground performance. A penetrating left-footer, he averaged 23.8 disposals and 4.8 tackles across the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships and was rewarded with All Australian honours. He also played some excellent football at senior level with Norwood, averaging 18.2 disposals and 4.6 tackles in 12 matches. Stephens enjoyed a breakout season for the Bloods in 2020 with a memorable AFL debut in Round 6 against Richmond alongside fellow debutant, Chad Warner. Stephens finished the campaign with eight appearances, averaging 12.5 disposals and 3.4 marks per game, while also kicking two goals.

Definitely not cemented imo
He's definitely cemented. There's not a wingman on the list playing better so far both this pre-season and tail end of last year.

Including McInerney, who I know you rate, and I do as well. But even though I rate McInerney more out of the two, I think Stephens is playing the best of late, so if he's not cemented, then I guess McInerney isn't either?

Bullshit

Is JMac cemented?
No , as not many are

Especially ****ijg Stephens who just barley broke in last year

The only reason people are riding him is cause he has actually got a kick and got near it instead of shying away from the contest which he did plenty of prior dont forget

I'm not sure what was bullshit about what I said.

I don't believe I said anywhere that Stephens was in Brownlow form, or that I'd be kicking Warner out of CBAs to fit Stephens in, or even that he's our best wingman.

I said he's in the best form out of all our wingmen so a spot on the wing will be his.

My exact words were

There's not a wingman on the list playing better so far both this pre-season and tail end of last year.
I am actually really looking forward to watching Dylan play this year. In the second half of last year he was
  1. an exceptional two way runner
  2. tackling with intent
  3. slotting goals (notice I used the word slotting. Slotting is easier than kicking. At least in my mind!.)
  4. playing with aggression
He belongs in the team now. And there is upside. Read my first sentence again.

For me cemented is the likes of mills/heeney/paps. Guys who could play shit for a month or more & still be selected. Or a position lacking depth like KPD with McCartin. Yes, he's our best wingmen atm but not cemented imo. Neither is Jmac to me.

Agreed, if his form drops for a couple weeks he'll be playing VFL quickly. He's looking ripe though and I'm expecting a strong season from him

My gripe re: Stephens is that he has been dropped off a decent game before (Cats, 2021), yet other kids and (then) fringe players have not been held to the same standard. It looks like that's changed for Stephens.
Bell was getting games after playing shi t ones and over Stephens

Wasn't even thinking of Bell, but true. I've said before that Wicks, McLean, Hayward have been given games generously at points. Hayward at least turned it around.
Still not over the moon about Hayward , doesn't get a lot of it and has the yips with his set shots

He has only played 30 games. Just starting. But he is there. These guys try their arses off to get there. Fans can think what they want. He will achieve or not despite them. It would be much better if people were more onboard than off board on the journey. Must be a sad existence doubting recruits who don't live up to your expectations in the first few years of their career when they are drafted high.

How do you rate a number 5 draft pick as a fan? You are the expert. You tell me. Plenty on here say he was or is not a number 5. Like they are experts.

Why not just judge him onfield. Just do that. What does he contribute to the team. If he is picked he is the best we have. If you are not satisfied with that then have a go at the recruiters. And then I can disagree with you there too. Forget his draft position. Keiren Jack, Papley, Rampe, even Wicks, Lloyd. These guys tried their guts out to get there. There are and were there. Why not just support them why they are there.

I don't get the negative Nellies. If you are a negative Nellie. Reply please.
Hi!

That game right there is why we wanted Dylan Stephens at the draft, not an inside mid or anyone else.

We had inside mids crashing and bashing and getting the ball forward by any means (ie ugly) necessary. We needed someone to finish that work off nicely (ie pretty.)

Zoom the lens out a little from those mids and in the open space there's Stephens, holding his width, trusting those mids to get it out to him. Not being a headless chook thinking he has to go in there and be involved all the time.

Footy. Smarts.

I bang on about it all the time but this is why. How you read the game is how you will play the game.

All of the above is not to say he's a pea-heart who won't win his own ball. Whenever he had to tonight, he put his body on the line and put the ball above all else. Another attribute that bodes well in footy but is a non-negotiable at the Swans.

His work in the off season was on full display last night. Well done to him. Maybe it's Stephens revenge season.
