Player Watch #32: Toby Pink - has been delisted, with the commitment to re-select him in the Rookie Draft

Pink putting body on the key forwards with Dawson/Comben coming over the top and intercepting has potential. Our key defenders have to work together, all the top teams have this trait.

It’s exactly how Collingwood won a flag with a backline of:

Markov, Murphy, Quaynor
Howe, Moore, Maynard

Murphy, Howe and Maynard all work together to nullify the 2nd tall ect.

While it would be hilarious to emerge from the McKay trade with both an equivalent key defender and Duursma I'm still gonna remain skeptical until we actually see him play at the level. Did look pretty good on Wednesday.
I was not a Mackay fan at all, frustrated the hell out of me, but replacing his aerial ability will be near on impossible this year. He’s up there with the best contested mark we’ve had at the club for the last 20 years.
Hoping like hell Pink can compete anywhere near the level, we need him to desperately.
W Dawson gunna be our next star KPB IMO. Love the cut of his jib.

Said it in the other threads, but I was on the fence in the northern forward pocket at RSEA park yesterday, so got to see our defense up close for the quarters they were down there.

Based on what I saw up close, I'd say Toby Pink is close to a lock for starting in round 1.

He was the defender responsible for telling Biggy and Dawson where to go, what holes/zones to fill, who to rotate on to, etc. He was marshalling the smaller guys around as well. You can tell he's got much more experience and defensive 'game sense' compared to Nyuon and Dawson, who at times still look quite lost back there.

I think he has all the tools to be an elite stopper especially when he gets the likes of Corr and Logue around him.

He isn’t well suited to the taller King/Hipwood types but I think he’ll hold his own against the like more physical types like Dixon, Hogan, Hawkins ect.

Very very interested to see if he gets the green light come round 1.

Thought he gave the AFL Wet Dream - Max King, an absolute bath. Really good signs.

King got the best of him a couple of times, but there were just as many times when Pink won the battle too.

That's what it'll be like with Pink. He's not some elite AA full-back gorilla. But he's good enough that we don't have to be shit-scared when the ball goes near him. He's solid.

Every team needs a workmanlike, no-fuss backman who does a serviceable job at worst each week. Toby appears to be that type. However, he is surprisingly more mobile than I expected and, as others have noted, has the footy smarts to go with it. Just what we need. Our off season recruiting, including this guy, has been spot on for what we need. When Logue comes back, I would not be the least surprised if Pink keeps his spot in the side.

Had 12 touches but ended up with the same in 1% actions across the field.
If he was taller he'd be very very good.
At 194cm, he'll be great for us and will probably keep his spot over biggy and dawson once corr and comben come in.

Looks composed. The Nostradamus you confuse me sometimes mate, you write off an inexperienced KPD who looked good against seasoned players yet bob for apples for Coleman-Jones whose points of difference appear to be being manhandled by smaller players or butchering chains of play with flat hands.

Clarko might just like that Dawson, Pink and Biggie have played three matches together in the past month and go with the synergy they're building. If not I'm guessing it's Comben in for Biggie and Dawson plays loose.
