Player Watch #32: Toby Pink - has been delisted, with the commitment to re-select him in the Rookie Draft

Lol nah this thread crazy. He was utterly dreadful. If McKay put that in last year he would have been rightly pelted

For one, he offers nothing ball in hand but most concerning was his positioning. Say what you will about the supply, he was constantly in no man's land. At least Dawson, by comparison, put himself in position where he could affect the contest. Pink didn't. Although I have some sympathy in coming up a very good Jesse Hogan first up

That's not to say he can't improve btw. And if they show faith in him and play him this week then fair enough. That's reward for a good pre season and he'll have a better time of it against Treacy compared to hogan. But to pretend he was anything other than calamitous in this one game is nonsense or rose-tinted glasses because he's from your sanfl side I guess

He didn’t play on hogan

He played part of a zone defence.

His positioning was poor at times. He got some good kicks over his head when he took front position.

No one is saying he was good.

We are saying he was beaten in his first game playing a zone defence against a team that were walking the ball down the ground kicking well to the advantage of their forwards.

Geez...game 1, he played poorly...so what!
Larks only had a single touch in his first game too from memory.

Give him the season and see where he goes from here. Could surprise you!
Expectations on a 25 year old KPD are different to a stick figure KPF.

Your expectations might be the problem
He’s 25. Played state league football (like Dawson).

He looked completely out of his depth.

He has little leeway in terms of inexperience. Would’ve played well over 100 games of football against grown men.

Maybe if our expectations were higher, we wouldn’t have to accept such performances.

His first time playing in our zone defense, with all new team mates and opponents, and his most senior support in Corr was demonstrably worse than him. If he looked lost at times, which he did, it's because he was. Question is if that's because of everything I said above (plus the speed of the game) or if he's just not good enough.

Dawson looked absolutely shithouse in his first game and the ball wasn’t coming down anywhere as easy as it did on Saturday.

If we are scrubbing players after one game then it’s going to be a long rebuild.

If we are going to scrub Pink, we may as well get on with delisting Corr as well, because for an experienced AFL defender he was a lot worse than Pink.

At the end of the day the kid may or may not make it, but let’s wait until there is a sample size.

We keep persisting with Lazarro and CCJ and they have been absolute shittrucks along the journey.

People also have short memories, because McKay was putting in performances just as bad as Pink las year.

I remember seeing Scott Thompson in his first season being towelled up by a young Tom Hawkins and thinking Thompson wasn't up to it. I will wait a bit longer before passing judgement on Pink

Many people wrote off Tarrant, Thompson and Firrito (the defender) early on in their transitions to defence.

Some players can adjust to the speed of the game far quicker than others.

Did you see the delivery the GWS midfielders were giving to Riccardi, Cadman and Hogan?

FFS.
GWS had Josh Kelly, Green, Coniglio delivering the ball to their forwards.

Not every team has such quality midfielders in their team.

Probably a good idea to give Pink more than one game, before writing him off?

If he's Josh Walker 2.0 then * yeah, that's a great stopgap KPD.

Walker had serious issues, but also serious talents, and when he/we played to his limitations he was quite effective.
Walker's biggest issue was his glacial speed decision making. I noticed on the weekend that Pink was faster to sum up a situation and make a reasonable decision, alot faster than either Walker or McKay.

It's funny how most are saying that it didn't matter who was in our backline as the quality of the delivery was too good. Yet here we are with people having a crack at Corr.

Because there's still a place for nuance. The zone contributed to things but Corr individually got outfoxed a few times that raised eyebrows.

Not like most of us have a horse in this race - makes little difference to most which defenders find a place in a successful side for us.

A one game sample size compared with what 3 years?
He has an extended history of poor positioning, weak one on one contests, horrible disposal...
