AFL Autopsy 4 point loss to Hawthorn

I’ve now watched the game on tv, after being there.

IMO, may be unpopular but I know what it’s like to lose and feel like crap afterwards so I’m posting it because often it helps a bit.

The reason many of you may think you had a down day etc, is I think Worsfold coached badly. I think now after watching it he made too many mistakes. His comments pre-game that we are inconsistent and played lower teams and then post game we didn’t play near our best (paraphrasing) suggest he took us lightly. It may explain why I think he coached badly.

Examples:
- Stratton dominated. He just had to move Hooker forward way earlier

- Surely he knew we would present an 18 man press to stifle your run. He had no counter plan. You were forced wide so often because of this.

- Gunston ran the most distance of any other player on the ground looking at the stats. He did nothing to make him accountable either.

Just my thoughts for what it’s worth but I think he was complacent in his tactical coaching and it showed on the day, rather than having a down day.

All that and it was a kick in it. You’re a good team and I’d be less inclined to blame players than wonder why he may have been a bit cocky. I also may be way off base.

No way either team took the other lightly.

Hooker was best player on ground third quarter. Too risky moving him off Roughy who struggled.

Goddard's call was fair, and I thought we did get lucky with the holding the ball when the Hawks player seems to clearly stop and had both hands raised.
Fair enough. No point worrying about decisions really I guess. There were two clear holding to balls right in front of me first quarter when the momentum switched to Hawks. I was ok with that if they had have done the same in the third quarter. Anyways we lost.

Felt like the focus all week was our form and how many we'd won out of how many and how many we'd need to play finals etc.

Felt like little focus was on beating the hawks.

Bomber Thompson's words about the group has achieved nothing spring to mind.

Didn't give the Hawks enough respect. club knew all week that our skills needed to be top notch and that we couldn't risk turn overs because Hawks cut you up and score which is what happend.

Thought it would be a comfortable victory before the game based on our last three weeks - We struggled at times with defensive transition and this is what ultimately cost us the game. Overall, I've witnessed a sustainable brand of footy in the last ten weeks we augurs well for 2019.

Gunston was the difference.

We just did not have a defender to go with him.
Ambrose/Dea would’ve been his matchups but both were out. I reckon we should’ve brought in Ridley instead of McNiece as the late change but oh well.

Yep 5 goals

100% Hawks would have lost if he didn’t dominate
They also would have lost if we didn’t have so many poor turnovers.

Similarly Hawks could say they would have won easy if Stringer didn’t dominate. He kicked three and gave off four.

They Also Would'Ve Lost If We Had Buddy & Simon Beaumont.

Who cares.
