This map might explain the strategic interests. Greenland was of strategic interest during the Cold War as any Russian missiles targeting Washington or the east coast would have flown over the North pole which is why they had (and still do) have a monitoring base located there.

Trump's brain fart idea is more based on the simpleton notion of establishing a buffer zone between the contiguous US and Europe/North Asia. Reckon someone showed him this map and he said -'what about...'




And while it's true that there are billions of barrels of oil reserves estimated to be located under Greenland, getting it out is another issue. Exploration was suspended in 2021 due to environmental concerns and basic economic fundamentals of the high cost of extracting oil from under the polar ice cap - but climate change might change that (making climate change worse of course).
