Personal attacks are also to be kept to a minimum.

Just a reminder, even if it hasn't come up for a few pages and y'all should know this stuff by now:

This thread is not about Covid, lockdowns, or vaccines. It is about Donald Trump. While Trump was in office during the pandemic and his response to Covid is relevant, there are pertinent threads for you to post your opinions on those things in.

It might also do with reminding a few that when you post on the SRP, you are responsible for backing up/verifying your claims to fact. What this means is that you will be asked time to time to support your claims with evidence, to ensure that this forum is as free of misinfomation as we can make it.

Do not post conspiracy theories on this forum. We have an entire other forum for that.

Thanks all.

As always, please submit ideas for the thread title by tagging Gethelred! We're looking for something new to match the new thread!

Trump's freezing of foreign aid is having horrific effects on the lives of some of the poorest people in the world, as organisations in Africa have been told to stop dispensing HIV medication that was purchased with US aid.

Awful global health implications even beyond the WHO withdrawal.

Appointments are being canceled, and patients are being turned away from clinics. Many people with H.I.V. are facing abrupt interruptions to their treatment.

Without treatment, virus levels in people with H.I.V. will quickly spike, hobbling the immune systems of the infected people and increasing the odds that they will spread the virus to others.

About one in three untreated pregnant women may pass the virus onto their babies.

Interrupted treatment may also lead to the emergence of resistant strains that can spread across the world.

One study estimated that if PEPFAR were to end, as many as 600,000 lives would be lost over the next decade in South Africa alone. And that nation relies on PEPFAR for only 20 percent of its H.I.V. budget. Some poorer countries are almost entirely dependent on the program.
The dumb shit could end up inadvertently killing more people than Hitler.

Part 21: Giving the people what they wanted.

One of the people he pardoned has already been shot and killed by law enforcement.

Those he pardoned and let loose on the streets are having more run-ins with law enforcement per head than any immigrant group. Who would have thought letting people who attacked Law Enforcement get away scot free would be a recipe for more lawlessness.

The guy (Angelo Notta) is obviously a pea-brained tosser who went out of his way to create a scene and get some cheap publicity to lighten up his sad little steroid fuelled life.

He got the response he wanted from the venue and obviously rang up the HUN who, eager to get the clicks from like minded idiots who form the Murdoch tabloid readership base, gave him the public platform he craved to liven up his pitiful existence.

IMHO the smart thing would have been to not link to the non-story. But now that you have, probably best to just shake our heads in private at the petty insignificance of it all and move on.
All these St Kilda types share a particular look and seem to have the same goals: trying to get attention and be cool.

The language of the Internet is outrage. Once people actually grasp this, and remove themselves from the endless cycle, then the oligarchy will lose their power.

Tall order, but I hope one day it will happen...and we can return to debate without insults or tribalism...because we can actually see the person standing in front of us...not just words and an opinion on a screen that conflicts with our point of view/our instilled values.

While I agree that face-to-face interactions have qualities that online (and anonymous) interactions don’t, it is still possible to have a mostly constructive, mostly civil discussion online if appropriate norms are agreed upon (and enforced on those who persistently digress).

Problem is, people traffic in 'one-upsmanship' and 'trolling' to win 'battles', on nearly every single form of social media/forum.

There are niches, but everyone generally seems perpetually pissed off these days - and is always looking for a fight online. Facebook is the perfect epitomization of this, given outrage generates more clicks than social media designed to engage. So people literally create incendiary posts, in order to generate their income.

It's pretty much a cesspool no matter where you go these days. Problem is, that's what makes the most money and engages the most, so it's only gonna get worse until people break out of the endless cycle.

In keeping with the recent confessions of watching conservative media in order to understand WTF they get their news...
I tried that with Fox back in the O'Reilly days. Shep and Wallace were still doing the actual news then. Mostly they gave a bare bones of the facts IIRC. But one time, Wallace did one that ever so slightly was negative to the GOP, and at the end made a short comment (that sounded very much like a different writer/voice had amended to a script) that threw back shade or doubt on the Ds. Felt very contrived editorial from upstairs.
But my overall reaction to the opinion shows like O'Reilly was that they were talking at or lecturing their audience. They weren't sharing information, or even informing the way a friend would. They were telling YOU that THIS was what you must believe. Again IIRC about the deepest factual backups were like the Hillary uranium thing, nothing contextual or they would say under oath. Usually they were what you see on Hannity now. Strongly biased opinion stated strongly as fact. Liz Cheney broke the law, Maddow has told more lies than anyone in the media...Ok, tell us the hows and whens. That is why their audience is so easily swayed and often shot down or shocked when presented with receipts.
It's just how they present this stuff. If it were true, then let's see the evidence. In the campaign of 2016, there were documents of Trump's dealings. Fox has their won testimonies in court cases. :winkv1:

Totally agree. Really just follow basic standards of good manners, or whatever you'd do face to face with someone.
