TDS is a thing. (Well was, last time. I think what he's doing now is pretty wild so if I lived in the US I'd be losing it too.) There are posters on our board who have it. I also reckon MAGA is also a form of TDS, from the opposite side if you like.

It’s a cult. Pure and simple.

Trying to have a sensible discussion with MAGA supporters is like trying to catch a rabbit with one hand, slippery, evasive, and always darting away from good faith debate. Unless you manage to corner them with facts, they’ll sidestep, deflect, or just outright ignore legitimate questions.

But every now and then, one of them says the quiet part out loud. Like when Flowerbyirene on another forum openly said, “Trump should be king, he’s a benevolent dictator.” I’ve seen variations of that sentiment repeated in right-wing echo chambers: “Trump should be emperor.” They say it half-jokingly, but the intent is deadly serious.

This fantasy that one man can fix everything (without effort, without systems, without accountability) is the hallmark of a cult mindset. It’s not politics anymore, it’s hero worship mixed with grievance-fueled authoritarianism. And for people who want maximum gain with minimal effort, that fantasy is seductive.

The MEP who said it is trying to wrest control of the left from the populist LFI to a more top down, third way grouping under him. He wants the left to work more with Macron and only ever joined the NFP in the first place with great reluctance. His comment about returning the Statue of Liberty is the kind of empty signalling that people seem to love in American liberalism but hopefully can be seen through by the French centre left.
