Im at home, left before the end for other reasons but it has been a pretty slow day.

Ganguly looks like he doesn't want to be there when he fields....just an observation, he did throw a gatorade or two into the crowd though.

Hope they can bat all day tomorrow and much of the last day.

Unlike many I have enjoyed todays cricket. Doesnt need to be 350 runs in the day for me to enjoy Test cricket.

Slow, slow, slow moving. Unusual for the Aussies to score at what is a pretty slow rate by their standards. A lot like an old traditional Test Match cricket day

The bunny jibes have stung Punter, he is determined NOT to get out to Harbhajan this innings.

Result of good bowling, sweepers on the boundary and using a softer ball all day.

India are the biggest f---ing hypoctites in the game.

That's why I loathe them.

And it's what pissed me off so much about the Sydney Test.

We play the game a hell of a lot better they than do, but the ****ing media turned them into a bunch of Saints.

I think part of it is the Aussie Team hates the Indians so much, they'd rather draw than give the Indians any chance to win.

Also, I got a $10 on Punter at 5-1 to be highest Aussie scorer.

What agency did you get on with punter at 5 -1, thats good odds

The furtherest i saw the odds out for him to be the highest scorer was 4 dollars, which tightened up to 3.85 the day before the test.

A bad days cricket (watching) is better than a good day working.

What was wrong with the day, both teams are jostling to get into a position to launch an unlikey bid for victory considering the time left.

I found it an absorbing day of cricket, every run is like gold, Ponting trying to get into form, the tactics, and some great reverse swing bowling.

It was a great day.

Best case scenario for the Aussies would be to score another 300 runs tomorrow (100 run lead), have the Indians 1-2 down at stumps, and back ourselves to run through them on Day 5.

Who am I kidding... this has draw written all over it.

Ponting and Clarkey MUST stick around, at least 'till they score their centuries and half centuries respectively. The first session tomorrow is the make-or-break moment of the match imo.

I think India are no chance of winning now, but interesting to note that the game is very similarly poised at the end of day 3 as the 2006 Adelaide Test against England.

We were 5/312 at the end of day 3 of that match, and proceeded to bowl the Poms out for 129 (after being 1/59 at stumps on day 4). So this pitch really deteriorates by the 5th day.

That said, India's batting lineup is much stronger than England's, and our bowling attack isn't what it was back then.

So all signs point to a draw, unless this crazy scenario happens ;) - We get a march on with our run rate and post 700/8d at the end of day 4. Then we have a chance to skittle the Indians for 180 on a day 5 pitch and steal an innings win :D

I thought that was an absorbing day's test cricket.

Great work by the openers (well done to Hayden) and a fabulous knock by Ponting, who was prepared to play the sheet anchor role. He is the complete test cricketer these days, able to adapt his game to suit the circumstances.

I'm not sure alot of people on this board appreciate how rare it is to have a number 3 of this quality.

Clearly this test means alot to the Australians (probably more than we knew given their knowledge of Gilchrist's retirement) and IMHO they have approached it in just the right way. They have every prospect of establishing a first innings lead now and if they can possible do that and push it up to say 100 or more it effectively blocks India from winning the match.

With little to bat for on the final day India may just lose focus and well, who knows.

Anyway first things first, Ponting and Clarke to refocus in the morning and get through the first session before we get too far ahead of ourselves.

Good post, Lester.

People who know little about true test cricket, will say today was boring, slow, uneventful etc. They have no idea.

Hayden's brutal yet calculated ton was magnificent, as was Jaques gritty 60. The little cameo at the end, when Clarke was blazing a few boundaries and playing like he'd been out there for 3 hours, was beautiful to watch, then he and Punter shut up shop and made sure we didn't lose another wicket.

A great day of cricket IMO!

the match is nicely poised.

as already stated, the first session is crucial for both sides.

if the aussies get rolled before lunch, the indians would only have to bat for 50 overs or so leaving the aussies 350 off 100 overs or 300 or so on the last day.

if the aussies get to tea, the scores should be level with 4 sessions remaining in the match which may leave india risking losing the match to actuially have a chance of winning it.

if the aussies get thru to the end of the days play tomorrow, they should be 70-100 in front and comfortable in knowing that they won't lose the match.

Scene is set for a Gilchrist blinder to take us to a quick 100 run lead. Bowl them out for 200, chase 100 in 10 overs on the last day, with Gilchrist sent in as opener.

I'm going in tommorow - can't miss the chance to see Gilly one more time.

Lets be honest though, we won last year because Warney flat out refused to even contemplate a draw, and as a result demanded that he had the ball in hand.

It was one of the best bowling performances you'll ever see - it's not likely to be repeated.

worst case scenario:
India rips through us and has us out by lunch D4 with a 100 run lead, piles on a quick 200 and gives themselves 2.5 sessions to bowl us out on a dodgy D5 pitch.
We need to bat out most of D4.

Australias only chance of a win would be to get a 200 lead  (unlikely) and bowl India out in 2 sessions on D5. Unlikely.

Imo
The way the test is currently poised the result has been reduced to 2 scenarios.
1. An Indian win
2. A draw.
