Isaac Heeney

Isaac Heeney is a crowd favourite and one of the best young players in the competition. The QBE Sydney Swans Academy graduate won the 2018 AFL Mark of the Year award, was selected in the AFL Players’ Association’s 22Under22 team in two of his eligible four years and played his 100th senior game in 2019. Heeney can be used in the midfield, forward line – where he booted four goals in star teammate Lance Franklin’s absence in Round 20 last year – or as a loose man in defence.

DOB: 05 May 1996

He is bloody strong , that mark in the goal square , he just moved the opponent so easily
We had players free and if it was ANYONE but Heeney, I'd have been pissed the kick went to a one-on-one. But you can pretty much always back him to win a one-on-one, he's just that good.

I love how Horse consistently goes to great lengths to point out how hard he works and how tough he is. Every chance he gets he raves about his hardness, his tackling, his two-way running, his repeat efforts. Although in fairness to Horse, he always has raved about those qualities with Heeney. Just the role change this year has given him some well-deserved reward for it in terms of highlights, stats, etc. which the media love.

I think we've got a handful of players who are brilliant in their roles but they also manage to transcend their roles to be brilliant in other ways that are appreciated, but perhaps not expected of them. Heeney sits right at the top of that list IMO.

Glad we're seeing him finally really fulfill his potential. I know he won an AA playing a lot more forward as well, but I always thought he was a bit better than that. I think earlier in this thread after the first week or two there was a bit of doubt over whether his current role was one-off or so (can't remember), but after 10 weeks now his best position is definitely running about through the middle.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) he’s competing with two of the best players in the game. It’s not easy getting three votes with Warner and Gulden around.

Fortunately

I'm not fussed about the Brownlow, want the last Saturday in September instead.

I think there'll be enough votes to go around.

We're winning every game, that offsets the Daicos factor IMO.

Yep this

it's secondary but I dunno small part of me just wants to see him win it to be honest

Averages for this year

26.3 disposals
1.6 goals
4.5 marks
5.3 tackles

Tidy season all in all...

A very big deal is made of any player that averages either:

20+ disposals and 2+ goals per game OR 30+ disposals and 1+ goal per game for a season.

I think averaging 25+ disposals and 1.5+ goals per game for a season is equally meritorious. While Heeney is receiving plenty of well deserved plaudits it would be nice to see a list of players who have achieved a season like this (as I have seen for those other quoted stats).

Safe to say everyone agrees with this. I’ll take a Heeney Norm Smith over a Brownlow any day.

Let's go the medal trifecta for him - Charlie, Normie, premiership 💗

The scary thing is that fans were screaming for Heeney to be used in the midfield more for the last 5 years, and it still would not have happened in 2024 if both Mills and Parker did not get injured.

Longmire is a great coach but he really dropped the ball when it comes to Heeney. I think it took him too long to put both Mills but especially Heeney in the midfield.

Heeney trained with the mids all off-season and I think did some time with them in 2022's off-season as well (happy to be corrected)

So I think Heeney to the mids was always the plan this year, particularly after the Carlton game last year. Maybe with a bit more time spent forward. Maybe even as a fill in for Mills until he came back. But given how well he has done since the start of the season you can't move him.
