I think he's better than depth. His inconsistency is due most likely to his injury run. When he played wing he was pretty consistent even though he's not a wingman.

His speed is just around the ball ala Selwood, quick and agile over short distances. Late 22 he played some great games across half forward, so unlike Prestia and Hopper he can be useful when rotating out of the midfield.

He is not a defensive player like Graham, but a very constructive user of the ball, so I hope he is in the middle round 1 and given a good run. I would rather see him given a real crack in there over Hopper as I think they are a bit similar but Ross is better (on Hoppers last 2 years).

Ross rarely gives the ball to a player in a worse position to him.
Hopper in full flight is one of the most prolific hard ball get players in the game and our current enforcer, while Ross is mostly outside. With Cotch/Dusty gone and Prestia slowing down we need Hopper to take that load.

But with Dusty and Shai now gone, Ross is a logical choice to play that mid/forward position that suits him if the prized recruits arn't ready.

Yes Ross is best when given the ball second by a player like Taranto or Hopper because he can hold on to it and give it off under pressure. Not really outside but not coal face.

Edwards played similarly but did it with quickness of hand rather than holding the ball in a tackle and being strong enough to give it off like Ross. How many times did Edwards get the ball off the hard ball getter and start the chain forward, which is why I think Ross is important, because Taranto and Hopper don't have great composure and tend to hack it forward.

Yep. High in score involvements and goal assists.

off the wing while Pickett ran with Neale a lot of the game. Ross has developed into a good winger. Been playing wing since mid 2021. Yze used him there and I feel that's where he stays. McAuliffe & Sonz mid rotations now. Maybe MRJ for Shai like bursts of pace.
And Smilie & Lalor when ready.

Both the Brisbane and Essendon game above he played strictly half forward. Yze used Ross on the wing for a bit, but late pretty sure he was in the middle.

I think Ross deserves a good go in the middle after being shunted around. Fair enough when you had a midfield like Prestia, Cotchin, Martin, Bolton, they had to try him in different places, but our midfield right now is weak, so give him a real crack at it to see what he can do. Can always go back to the wing if we need something different, he did have games of 24 and 26 disposals there early last season, so as you say he is a good wingman.

Ross started the final on the field on one wing. Played it extremely well.

saw him sub on for Caddy in 2021 and play wing at Metricon. Had a front row seat to Ross link up perfectly with play up and down the ground.

Not as good as his debut year?

We got 3 187cm wingers. Hugo & Banks can run. Ross finds the football.

I think he is an AFL level player who works pretty well inside and outside. He tends to make good decisions and doesn't shirk the contest. Sounds great. But I also think that he is an all round 7/8 level player. He isn't great at anything. But is quite good at many things.

Ross is a great player to fit into your 2nd rotation, and to fill holes.

In 2025 I see him being ideal to make our midfield work better. Ensures we are competitive, protects the kids, but allows them to play as the coaches see fit. Hopefully he gets pushed out over time because we have developed much better players (Sounds cruel, but it'll takes years)

He also has worked hard and if guys like Sonsie follow his path they'll be good AFL players. So glass half full to me. But not 99% full
I agree okay at most things but a master of none.

We have played him as an outside player for most of his career simply because he has never been good enough to push out the more contested mids we have had.
He is now in a contest with Taranto Hopper Prestia and despite their age he is still no where near their level. If Smillie Lalor and Hotton are not better players than him then we have got this last draft horribly wrong.
As a mid he is still in the same boat behind too many others. Even Dow with all his failings has been seen as a better inside option.
We have two most likely earlyish first rounders next year and atm you would say another rounded mid and a running mid would be high on the list of priorities. He is only going to drop further down the pecking order imo.

My trouble is in playing him as an outside player/wing he just does not have the hurt factor and right attributes for the role. He has been servicable in the role but imo we want better. There is no outstanding attributes that says yep play him inside or yep play him on a wing he is just okay at most things that allows him to be a servicable player at the level.

People say he is the least of our worries and in a way they are right. The trouble with that is it stops those in charge of actually looking for better options and players like Ross stay on the list for whole careers.

Sonsie well this is his last year for me. He needs to improve in some pretty key areas.
My concern with him is his running and he has shown a dislike for contact too often. It's this that has me thinking he will not make it.

Ross is fine at the moment. Over time he may be passed. But right now, and for the next few years, he is a solid best 22 player. His best is pretty good. So we'll see.
