I was expecting a bit more from Caldwell this year if he got a fair run at it with injury which he seems to have had with avoiding lower body issues

I do agree with some other posters above that he looks to have lost a bit of his dynamic flair this year, so is he going to regain that through continuity, become a little hard nosed bull like T.Adams or is he going to be a mix of half fwd/onball

One thing that some might not consider is he is avg 6.4 SI (and i know some dont believe in that stat, although they should)

Places him around 30-40th ranked in the comp and thats from this year where the clubs struggled to score and he imo hasnt looked his absolute best

Some elite players ranked 20-35 that he sit within that stat

Also noticeably they dont believe he has the tank for onball yet and i remember he was a fairly good endurance runner when drafted

69% TOG as an onballer

Where that Half Fwd/Mix onball role hes around the 80% TOG. Not sure if something was up with him tonight or thats a sign

I suppose if he can turn that 23 disp, 5 Mark, 5 Clearance, 7 tackle, 13 CP game and extrapolate into an 82-85% TOG then his stats become seriously impressive

He doesnt seem to have any weakness in his game but no super elite traits. Although his kicking, marking and tackling seems pretty strong

You know what I do not like about score involvements ?
It can favor players who just hunt the footy non stop. Sure they get involved with the score chains but how much does it cost that they are not as involved in preventing scores ? If you chase the footy around and get 4o touches chances are your score involvement is going to be despite the fact you may have 10 to 15 meaningless touches.
It is an okay stat but like them all you can only use it to give a picture of part of their game.

The only use I can think of for the stat is to confirm how a team likes to move the ball.

Do your eyes deceive you that it's half back A, wing B and half forward C who are involved in all the scores? Or is it flashier but not as prolific as the other option? Is it always the same.

A link in that broader chain is not relevant.

It's a nonsensical way to assess the involvement of midfielders. Score assists and inside 50 kicks (including the percentage of kicks marked) are what is important for midfielders.

The midfielders that top the score involvement charts are all damaging, incisive, take the game forward types, it has to count for something.

You can accumulate a lot of footy and not be a big score involvement guy, it’s not a given.

Certainly not saying it ranks the players in the competition purely by this stat

Hes in very good company and it surprised me seeing him ranked by avg as 26th recently when i looked. May have been before injury.

It says hes making good decisions and executing well

Strange response in this context.

It could hypothetically pump up high possession players, but those players get more than enough praise for getting 40 touches anyway. They don't need score involvements to garner positive attention.

Very strange to be making the complaint in a discussion about Caldwell. 9th for disposals, 4th for score involvements. He isn't high in the stat by coincidence.

It was not a complaint and I said it "can" favor high possession players.

On the flip side, there’s only one ball on the field so if you have it then the other 38 blokes on the grass probably don’t.

Rewatched the game last night and he was much better than even I first credited him for. Thought he was almost our best for 80% of the game. Looked to move the ball forward at all times which was hugely beneficial to our thrusts forward.

Back this up for the rest of the year and I may need to eat my own humble pie by suggesting he would only be a run of the mill, b grade at best midfielder.

From his first Intraclub last year I called him a future Brownlow winner so you could say I’m in the opposite camp to you.

Some of the hard ball gets and dish offs the other night were absolutely ridiculous. Still believe he’s going to be a star.

And the blokes chasing the footy in the midfield have many more chances to have the ball .
