James Rowbottom

The Sydney Swans recruited James Rowbottom with their second selection at the 2018 AFL Draft and the midfield bull impacted from the get-go. The Oakleigh Chargers product made his AFL debut against Richmond at Marvel Stadium in Round 5, 2019 and finished the season with 12 senior games beside his name. Rowbottom also led the NEAFL MVP voting when it was hidden from the public after Round 12. The young Swan is a ball magnet, explosive at the stoppages, an outstanding tackler and a clean user of the footy.

James Rowbottom
DOB: 19 September 2000
DEBUT: 2019
DRAFT: #25, 2018 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Camberwell (Vic)/St Kevin's College (Vic)/Oakleigh U18

Is one of our keys now and works so well with Grundy, won't ever get the praise others get , but just deserves to be on the front page after an epic effort tonight.

Another article about the 'underrated' Rowy.
His current average of 9.3 (tackles) per game is on track to become an AFL record.

“It's kind of cool that I've almost played 100 games and haven't got a Brownlow vote,” Rowbottom said in April, via NewsCorp.

“It doesn't really bother me, I don't play to get votes every week. To have the trust and confidence of the players and coaches inside the four walls is all I really care about.”

Article also contains a nice vid compilation from @Zanerednwhite

I consider Nick Smith to be one the Swans great backmen, and he never garnered a single Brownlow vote. Yet his name would have been the fixed on the whiteboard. Rowie is the same position. Valued highly by the club and fans but seemingly invisible to the umps when it comes to votes.

Watched a replay of the cats game yesterday. 10 to go in the third and Mitch Duncan attacks the ball and collects it at speed. Rowbottom lines him up and it was like Duncan, a tough player IMO, hit a brick wall and indeed Rowbottom knocked him backwards. Rowbottom doesn’t look that big but jeez he is tough and strong.
Good piece of footy from both players and I saw it took them both a bit to get up again.

Knew Rowbottom was in for a big year when they showed him benching 40kg dumbbells in each hand during the pre-season gym videos

According to Wiki James is just 76kg (185cm). Duncan is 88kg (188cm). We know both are hard as 😺. Magic.

The amount of fans of other clubs who go 'who' or 'over rated' whenever he is mentioned is right up there - it is bizarre, but reflects the total lack of understanding they have of his role and importance to the team.

Would be just about the first name on the team sheet each week. He isn't flashy, he isn't an all time great. But he is a superstar in his role, and in my opinion the 'glue' that makes our midfield group tick. Very rare that if he plays his role well, we don't win. And he very rarely doesn't play his role well for the team.

Great example of why I don't hold fear that the ambush that happened in 2022 could happen again. Its not just Rowy that is now 'tough and strong' - our other mids in that younger group are much stronger and tougher. They stick more tackles, break more tackles, are harder to tackle. They have arrived collectively - but led in the tough/strong stakes by Paddlebutt!

he has an ability to launch into a tackle and either stick it or force an offload, and he then hits the next bloke
he's like a funnel web, he can strike repeatedly

I find it so frustrating that when the experts are lauding the elite players in the swans midfield they completely ignore the fact that this bloke just matched the all time swans tackle record and looks on track to break it this season.
As great as Heeney, Gulden, and Warner have been I think we could cover for any one of those players coming out easier than losing Rowy.

Watched the Carlton game yesterday because... why not?
At one stage Rowbottom went through Pittonet.
Pittonet is 202cm and 104kg.

Rowbottom gave away 28 kilos and sat him on his arse.

Got the silver service today and turned in an error strewn performance. Not interested in tackling. Injury?
Wasn't his best game for sure. Adelaide seemed to be putting a bit of work into him at stoppages (along with Chad).

Also probably hampered by the fact that we absolutely murdered them in the clearances and contested ball, he simply didn't have a lot of tackling to do.
