Alll these players get dropped when the OS boys are available.

The other thing I didn't mentioned is the huge reduction in pay. Is he willing to accept that?

The point I was raising though was that they do have international 'careers' now. In the WC Qualys against the lesser nations these guys guys might get another chance to get a cap, availability pending of course.

Yeah sorry thats right..... i guess you could make arguements for both really.

Archie's went backwards in terms of his international football. He didn't get a run a WC2006.
Wait to see if Carle gets a regular gig, did he even go OS for a club?
Milligan to my knowledge hasn't played club football overseas.

Carle briefly played for Troyes in League 1 around 2001/02. Other than that I don't think he has played for anyone else overseas.

Archie's went backwards in terms of his international football. He didn't get a run a WC2006.

But he still got there, played the first leg of the Uruguay tie, etc. Playing in Australia didn't harm that.

Wait to see if Carle gets a regular gig, did he even go OS for a club?

Good form on home soil got him back into the national scene recently versus China.

Milligan to my knowledge hasn't played club football overseas.

Obviously hasn't had to to get into the national team.

The Kiwi connection has continued at Wellington Phoenix FC, with New Zealand internationals Steven Old and Glen Moss signing two-year contracts with the new Hyundai A-League club.

Joining them in the latest batch of signings are Australians Steven O'Dor and Vince Lia, who have signed for two years and one year, respectively.

The signings bring to 10 players Phoenix has secured in the past week, following Ross Aloisi, Mark Paston, Tim Brown, Richard Johnson, Michael Ferrante and 17-year-old Wellingtonian Costa Barbarouses.

Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert says the signings this week have shown that quality players are being attracted to the club, with the balance between New Zealand and Australian players evenly split.

Old, a 21-year-old defender, made 10 appearances for Newcastle Jets in last season's Hyundai A-League. Herbert sees this season with Phoenix as an opportunity for Old to realise the potential he has shown through age-grade and international level on a weekly basis.

"It's a critical year for Steven," Herbert said.

"He has cut his teeth slightly with Newcastle but year one at Phoenix will be a big year. There will be an expectation for him to grasp the level of football required."

For 24-year-old goalkeeper Moss the pressure will also be on to secure the starting spot for Phoenix as he continues his on-field battle with All Whites team-mate Paston.

Having two outstanding goalkeepers will create a happy selection headache for Herbert.

"There will be some interesting selection decisions around that battle," Herbert said.

"Glen's involvement in the national team last year [in Europe] showed he had really grown in stature. He will certainly add to the strength of the defence at Phoenix."

O'Dor, 20, made a huge impression on Herbert while he was caretaker coach at the New Zealand Knights for the club's final five games last season.

"He's a talented young defender from Melbourne who I worked with at the Knights and he impressed. He's a player with an excellent future and has great character."

Likewise Lia, 22, brings considerable playing talent to Phoenix. Over the past two seasons he made 24 appearances for Melbourne Victory. He was part of the Australia under-20 World Cup team in 2003 and in 2005 when he captained the side. He is in the Australia under-23 Olympic team.

"Vince is a player who has had excellent grounding through the Australian system," Herbert said.

"He's played at a prominent club in last season's champions Melbourne Victory, but here's a chance now at Phoenix for Vince to be exposed to longer periods of game time."

Paolo Wanchope ?? He was pretty high quality back a few years..... Forgive me but I dont know many other Costa Ricans and he would be the other striker

This one passed me by yesterday:

Wellington's Phoenix has completed its first foreign signing for the club's inaugural season in the Hyundai A-League - Brazilian Daniel Lins Cortes.

The 27-year-old left back/midfielder - known as Daniel - is currently playing for Brazilian side Guarani.

He has played most of his career in the Brazilian Campeonato, including time with Juventude and Botafogo. He also played for Dutch first division side FC Twente and Videoton in Hungary.

Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert said the signing of Daniel, a dead-ball specialist that likes to range forward, was a key to how Phoenix would play this season. He will likely play in midfield at Phoenix.

Other Hyundai A-League clubs, including Adelaide United, had actively chased the 180cm, 78kg Brazilian.

"It's great for Phoenix to get a player of this calibre - especially with other A-League clubs interested in his services," Herbert said.

"South American players are well known for their technical ability and we are sure he will bring that to Phoenix."

"It's important that we as a club make sure he feels comfortable in his new environment."

Herbert said after watching considerable video footage of the Brazilian his contacts in Australia and South America had helped secure the deal.

Sydney FC's search for a new marquee player is set to continue with Dutch star Phillip Cocu now seemingly out of the club's plans for next season.

The PSV Eindhoven star has told the club it is too early for him to make a decision, prompting Sydney to talk with other players.

Sydney FC coach Branko Culina said securing Cocu's signature was always going to be a long shot as he was voted the second best player in Holland this season.

Sportal can confirm the club has had discussions with up to three other big-name players, including current Socceroo and World Cup hero John Aloisi.

"It's fair to say that we've earmarked a number of players, including John Aloisi, as players that could do the job for us on and off the park," Culina said.

"We're negotiating with two or three other players, or we have been, and it's a matter now of going back to them and saying 'OK, lets see which one is the best prospect?'"

Meanwhile, the FFA has denied a request from Sydney FC for financial assistance to help lure a big-name Australian player back to the A-League.

Culina, while not surprised, is disappointed in the FFA's decision.

"It's a bit disappointing to some extent because I think it's in the FFA's interest and the A-League's interest that we do get a quality marquee player because we are not only going to benefit," he said.

"The marquee player's not only going to assist Sydney FC with marketing the game and on-field performance, it's going to assist Australian football just like when Dwight Yorke arrived here, everyone benefited."

"Sydney is the one taking the risk here forking out all this money and everyone else is going to benefit."

"I think the FFA should certainly, when it comes to an Australian guy … consider that and see what they can do to assist."

"Whether it be us or any other Australian club who wants to bring Australian internationals who have a lot to offer, it's not only the club's responsibility it should be the FFA."

The Sydneysiders play J-League champion the Urawa Reds in Japan on Wednesday, needing victory to advance to the knockout stages of the AFC Champions League.

WINGER Nick Rizzo has returned home to Australia after 11 seasons playing in Europe to sign for A-League outfit Perth Glory.

Rizzo, 27, who played with Liverpool and Crystal Palace in England and in Italy for Ternana, has signed for two seasons.

The left-footed player represented Australia at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and has played one senior international.

Wellington continuing to build a pretty handy squad:

New Zealand's leading international goal scorer, Vaughan Coveny, has joined the Wellington Phoenix Football Club.

Coveny, 35, signed a two-year deal with the new A-League club - subject to Football Federation Australia approval - that will see him return to his hometown of Wellington to continue his playing career.

Coveny's signature brings to 13 the number of players signed by the Phoenix. He joins six other New Zealanders - Tony Lochhead, Tim Brown, Costa Barbarouses, Mark Paston, Glen Moss and Steven Old.

Coveny retired from international football earlier this year after netting 30 goals in 75 appearances in an All Whites career spanning 14 years.

He heads the New Zealand goal scoring from Jock Newall (28), Steve Sumner (27) and Brian Turner and Keith Nelson (25 each).

Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert is delighted to have a proven scorer.

Coveny played five internationals under Herbert's stewardship with the national side.

"He is a proven goal scorer and has a tremendous professional work ethic. I'm sure he will carry that on at Phoenix," Herbert said.

Coveny played the first two A-League seasons at Newcastle Jets, scoring nine goals in 31 appearances.

Between 1995 and 2004 Coveny made his mark at South Melbourne in the Australian National Soccer League (NSL), scoring 82 goals in 240 appearances.

He also played for the Melbourne Knights from 1992-94 (28 appearances, four goals) and Wollongong Wolves from 1994-95 (38 appearances, 15 goals).

Career highlights include being an NSL grand final winner in 1997-98 and 1998-99 and playing for New Zealand at the Confederations Cup in 1999 and 2003.

Coveny scored twice in New Zealand's historic 3-1 win over Georgia in Germany last May - the All Whites' first international win on European soil.

They are building a reasonable squad arent they !! Its good to see though, and hopefully the public get behind them and support them, its their last chance.

Wellington Phoenix have signed three more players - Brazilian Felipe de Souza Campos and Australians Royce Brownlie and Karl Dodd - bringing to 16 the player roster at the A-League club.

Campos, 25, is contracted to Croatian club Hajduk Split until June 30 but has signed a pre-agreement with Phoenix. He joins on a nine-month contract with the option of another year.

The Brazilian is an attacking midfielder.

He is Phoenix's second of four overseas signings, joining fellow Brazilian midfielder Daniel Lins Cortes.

Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert said Campos had tremendous technical ability and was an excellent passer.

"From a team balance point of view he will bring a different type of strike option to Royce (Brownlie) and Vaughan (Coveny)."

"Scouting reports and video analysis have confirmed that he is - and should be - a considerable talent in the Hyundai A-League."

Brownlie, 27, is a striker who played for English club Swindon Town recently.

He played for Queensland Roar in the inaugural A-League season in 2005-06, making 10 appearances and scoring two goals.

He has signed for two years.

"Royce has considerable presence as a frontrunner and is good off both feet," Herbert said.

Dodd, 26, is a central defender who was a teammate of Brownlie at Roar, making 12 appearances. He then signed for Romanian club FC Universitatea Craiova before moving to Falkirk (Scotland) in March 2006 where he made 11 appearances in the Scottish Premier League.

He has signed a two-year deal.

"Karl has played well in the top flight in Scotland and is technically very sound," Herbert said.

"He can play as a sweeper which could add a different dimension to how we might play. And, like Royce, there is a determination from them to come back to the A-League and make a real difference."

They're not mucking around, are they? Dodd will be a good signing though, I liked him at Queensland.
