Oppo Camp Adam Treloar (Traded to Bulldogs 2020)

This off-season has an air of 2012/13 about it with the club wishing to move on established players. It seems there’s been an internal realisation that our list isn’t quite good enough and we’re wanting to reshape our dynamic in a more meaningful way. While I’d like for Treloar to remain a magpie he is arguably the most expendable if that is the case in terms of trade value. Cox or Phillips wouldn’t net as nearly as much.

I don’t buy that our cap is bursting as the AFL reviews and approves every deal to ensure clubs remain under and can remain under in future years, but cutting some players in the 500-600k bracket would give us flexibility to fill more crucial list needs in the years ahead.

Looking at our list how many match winning mids do we have? Pendlebury and Grundy are the closest. Treloar is a tricky one to judge as I feel his footy and hurt factor has been affected by that double hamstring injury. He was certainly missing his burst of pace in 2019, but there were signs it was returning in 2020. What happens to his game if he keeps getting hamstring injuries though?

The concerns around his mental health and being away from family seem valid and it would ordinarily be a unique situation. The ‘20 hubs however would provide a guide if it’s workable.

BF posters picked this in 2019 lol
Yet Collingwood thought obtaining Beams was a solution..
2018? I didn’t mind the risk, but never liked the cost. That cost looks worse now.

It's only his last year that is backended, and we wouldn't be paying part of his salary for 5 years, probably just the last year. Now don't have a meltdown but I think treloar is just an accumulater, he can't kick on the run anymore, constantly gives out hospitol handpasses, gets pushed aside easily in a contest, doesn't kick goals and never gets tagged because the opposition know this, his time of tearing anyone a new one ended in 2018 when he did both his hamstrings
Why would any club pay AT more than $500k pa.? They know they have him in a corner. I don’t think ditching him is going to achieve one of the aims of creating cap space. As far as his ability goes he is one of many who does my head in with his disposal. I’m not saying he is A grade. Just worried about the karma of him improving at another club and rubbing our noses in it. I actually don’t have a problem with the club wanting him out. But they should have the courage to put their hand up and say “we made some mistakes and managed this poorly in hindsight, we’re sorry to do this but need to make the best of a bad situation” I could respect that from the club.

No its not. It is widely reported and acknowledged that he is earning $4.5m over the next 5 years ($900k per year). This is what the clubs are baulking at. It was reported last night that the Pies have indicated they will contribute $100k per season for the length of his contract (5 years)

That "widely reported" and "acknowledged" figure is based on a total guess isn't it?

It's pretty clear that Treloar took slight unders in a couple of years of his first contract which has boosted his 2021 number potentially up to the $900k range, but I can't see how that one back ended year in his first contract would parlay itself into another 4 years at that same heavily inflated figure?

I could see the extension for the extra 4 years maybe topping out at $700k per year but nothing beyond that.

I'm still convinced it's all about both this year's figure and maybe the last two years of the extension still being at that same amount, or perhaps being a little back-ended, in his age 31/32 years (possibly in anticipation of the cap increasing over the 2021-2025 period), when most players salaries are starting to taper off a little (and we're now potentially looking at TPP reductions over the next 2-3 years, not increases).

What we know/have heard;
  • Adz on $900K next year
  • Pies can’t fit this in the cap
  • Adz Family moving to Qld for 10 months
  • Pies think he can’t spend that amount of time without them
  • Adz wants to spend time up there during the season
  • Pies prepared to pay $200-$300K to another club to take him
This really is an easy fix…
  • Adz sits out a few games during the year e.g.
  • Not available for games prior to and following bye = 3 weeks with fam
  • Ditto pre-finals bye = 2 weeks (plays final)
  • Pick 4 games during year where opposition structure ok without him = 8 weeks with fam
  • Let him go up a week early and stay longer after our Qld game = 2 weeks with fam
  • Have an odd trip up there when there is an extended break = 1 week with Fam
  • Kim does same when they play Magpies\Vixens in Melb = 4 weeks with fam
  • Boom! 10 months apart is now only 6, with no lengthy period
  • Adz forgoes the match payment for these games.
  • $900K for the season (H&A) = $39K/game => 6 games @$39K = $235K
IN
  • $235K cap saving
  • Keep a much loved and important player
  • Don’t pay this amount for him to make another club stronger
  • Show the world how progressive and caring we are
  • Don’t lose revenue from thousands of microwaved memberships
  • Stick it up the f*wit journos
OUT

Nothing, everyone’s a winner!

You’re welcome.

Sidey replacing Tres in the midfield. fu** me.

Yes, our midfield lacks breakaway pace even now. Would be significantly more pedestrian if Sidey replaced Treloar in there. Not sure where the truth lies, but whichever way you look at it, this has been a real clusterf..k!

I’m seriously disillusioned and pretty pessimistic for the next few seasons. You just wonder whether anyone will be held to account, or will Eddie just come out eventually and blithely spout the “side by side” nonsense, and “nothing to see here, we’ll be right”.

Boy, how's the carry on in this thread without any facts?

Keep believing Tommy Morris and Sammy Edmunds 'sources'.

Way more to play out on this, let's just see what happens over the coming days.

In other words, calm the fu** down people.

Thank you for this sensible contribution.

Are you disappointed by the club’s handling of Treloar?
Although I don’t want to lose Treloar , I don’t believe everything that’s in the media, there’s more to it in my view. The only thing we know from the club point of view is they’re not saying anything.

You obviously don't have much idea about culture within an organisation. If we had arrangements like that for Treloar then every player would want that and we'd be towards the bottom of the ladder every year.

Yep we're ****ed. The disillusioned people here will say something like 'Floreat pica' and keep living this lie that we are a big successful organisation.
2 flags in 62 years. Hard luck stories baked into our culture, sentence usually starts with 'we nearly...'.

I know quite a bit about workplace culture, this equates to 0.8, there are several in my team who for family reasons have requsted to work 0.8, they get paid 0.8, we keep valuable workers and morale. Most prefer the full wage though.

They are the figures being reported across the media from Jake Niall at The Age, Jon Ralph at the Herald sun, Tom Morris on Fox Footy and the AFL web-site. This is all we have to go on. Nobody but Treloar, his manager and the Pies would know what he is on. One would have expected the other clubs would have inquired of Treloar's salary and term of contract. However clubs have since baulked at the amount and length of Treloar's contract

Your comment of $900k for one season is also a total guess isn't it?. There is no report anywhere that the $900k was for one season. Clubs would not be baulking at the long-term contract if the high $$$ was only for one year

Reported by Jake Niall, Peter Ryan, Michael Gleeson and Sam McClure as being $900k over 5 years

AFL website stating Treloar is set to earn upwards of $800k per season for the next 5 years

Herald Sun web-site

Let's call it $800-900k, still a ****ing lot of money

The difference is that you can hire another person at 0.2 to cover the shortfall in labour needs. With an AFL list, we have 40 players only. We can’t say that equates to 40 @ 0.8 (part time players) and 8 @ 0.2 and employ a full list of part time players.

The thing about Treloar’s family situation, most people assume that Treloar will be the one that is flying every week to Queensland. It will be the other way around. Kim will have more time off from Netball than Adam. It will be Kim flying down to Melbourne more often than Adam.

We are talking about a 2 hour flight. If there is a day off from training, either could take the 6am flight. Spend 12 hours together during the day then take the last flight home. Regular people who work 10-14 hour shifts often only have 4-5 hours together prior to sleep.

And even if there is another COVID outbreak and state borders are closed. Players have just spent the past season dealing with this and being away from their families. Only a select few had their families with them. If most of the players made it work last season being away in hubs, then they can make it work again.

Collingwood is absolutely being irresponsible trying to force Treloar out. The family reason to move Treloar on is mostly crap. It is driven by our poor salary cap situation.

People aren't disappointed with the Club wanting to Trade Treloar. People are disappointed with the way he has been treated. For the last 3 years, he has taken a pay cut to accommodate for other players, now that it is his time to get back pay, the club is trying to push him out of the club. What impact does this have on future contract negotiations? Players will not trust the list management when asked to take a hit and we will repay you next contract. Players from other clubs will look at this and say F**k that, im not going there.
We don't know yet how he's been treated because all we have is the media's dribble. I will agree the club has f?cked up by giving such ludicrous contracts to a lot of these players. I don't think he took a paycut originally and was recently granted a new mega deal.

I don't agree that he is being shafted regarding his wage. The club signed him to a lucrative deal and he will still be entitled to the whole amount. Just because it's back ended doesn't mean he's getting less. It's just a way the club spread the load to accommodate other player contracts. He's still getting whats coming to him.

I think the club has finally realised that we aren't getting bang for buck and need to look to improve our list. Treloar would probably be in our top 3 earners and that's not bad considering he's no superstar. I'm all for moving him on as long as we learn from these inflated contracts and improve our situation on the field.

Unfortunately the AFL system forces teams to over pay for quality but Adam is certainly no Dusty or Danger.

You make a fair point Sir, I had considered that but left it out because it didn't fit my narrative.

This is only my opinion and I’m sure others may have different views.

Where things stand now, I thoroughly believe AT is best to request a trade to GCS. This is not because of pick 5 although that is a good result for Collingwood. And I think HCS will happily part with pick 5 if Adam says he wants to be there.

My reasoning he should choose GCS is this. If Adam is to change clubs, he needs adjust to a new environment and form new friendships and relationships. You can see how this would cause some anxiety to Adam with his history. Everybody is always apprehensive about change and deal with it differently.

Being separated from his family while remaining at Collingwood would have been one thing, but coping with the separation from loved ones while dealing with changing clubs would likely be much more difficult for Adam.

I sincerely hope that he makes the decision to move to the GCS. They have an exciting young group, he adds to that, and playing football, being with his family and living at the Gold Coast where he’d like to end up later anyhow, is not a bad thing. I think it will be great for him and his family.

I think I speak for most Pies supporters in saying that we will miss Adam’s qualities as a human being just as much as his football ability. I only wish him the very best.

What about if we do this... send Adz AND Grundy to GCS and ask GCS to pick up Broomhead as well. Ads has a great friend and teammate there, as well as his family. Grundy has his best mate there, and will get his $1m to play 120 minutes in the ruck like he wants to do. Pies get $2m salary cap relief. Cap issues fixed, stupid contract extensions fixed. We get GCS pick 5 and Brodie and next years 2nd and 3rd round picks. Enough for points that they need. We finish bottom 6 next year.
