Autopsy Adelaide wins the prelim [WARNING: ZERO TOLERANCE TO TROLLING]

Another night when we wilted under immense pressure - too many passengers.

Lack pace and class in the forward half and I think Tommy is way past his best now.

Menzel is finished in the Hoops - would Stringer be better? Could be horses for courses, but worth the punt.

No medium talls like Murdoch and Parsons that can mark and run, nothing in that 190/192 size, we need some decent talls
Cupboard is bare.

We don't deserve this shit
Menegola, Kolodjashnij, Stanley, Menzel, Murdoch, Scooter are not fit to wear the shirt
Us fans don't deserve this
3 times in the last 5 years
Time to bring the axe out and I'll start funds to pay out certain players

A lot of players were ****ing shit. But no way in hell we axe Scooter or Menegola

So where to from here? Hit the trade table again?

IMO we've missed our chance, teams below us are only going to get better, Selwood and Hawkins are past their best, Danger carrying the load, to many passengers, there ain't no easy fix to this team to win a premiership.

What a depressing way to go out. Just reverted to our old panic , fumbling footy in the first quarter and got too far behind. That last quarter was really painful too. Felt sorry for the guys that tried thier guts out like Danger, Joel and Motlop. Hopefully we get Gaz and Stringer and can load up for another tilt next year.

Must trade. For a variety of reasons it is the only option.

Watching an average team like adelaide go on a run to a flag only confirms it for me.

I made a fairly despondent post after the loss to Sydney in Rd 20 where I finished up by saying that the whole season to that stage had a sense of going through the motions; an inevitability that despite the team being good enough to get the wins on the board in the H&A season there were fatal weaknesses waiting to be exposed come Finals.

In this current iteration of the competition, treading water is as good as going nowhere; there are no unbeatable teams, no powerhouses.

The well-worn ‘always next year’ is as factually accurate as just about any prediction can get; like death and taxes, we can be certain that there will always be another year of footy; it will outlive us all.

But that doesn’t really comfort me as much as putting on a Premiership dvd and basking in the reflected glory of supporting a team who took it’s opportunities and triumphed.

I ain’t mad though, I've always suspected this team was just shy of greatness.

But it is frustrating, because we have been thereabouts enough times now post-2011 that you start to question the fabric of the club; why are they never quite good enough to step up, even if it means exceeding themselves occasionally, when it counts?

Last year Sydney always had our measure; they were clearly better than us and that sucked but was fathomable - but this season really counts as one where we might have strung together a run of decent games and come away with some silverware. We actually managed to get the Sydney monkey off our back in a final only to fall in a Prelim in depressingly similar fashion to what befell us in 2016.

Fair play, Adelaide were red hot at stages tonight, and we rarely generated more than a slow burn.
Their style of play is far more attractive than ours too, it hurts to admit.

Some might point out individuals for blame but I don’t really see the point tonight; twice now this team has been unable to dictate the tempo of a match early on in a Prelim - was it like this in 1980/81? That was just before my time as a Geelong supporter.

Of course we ‘load up’ and go again next year.

The club has committed to Chris Scott for the time being; and he has outright stated he would walk away if he didn’t think he was getting the results he expects.
It must be time for him to examine the type of game he wants this team to play.

Team balance has long been a vexed issue for the current side, we always seem slightly too tall, the forward line never has the requisite small forwards on deck to exert the type of pressure we aspire to apply.
There are positives to take away from the season, the development of certain players, certain parts of the structural jigsaw falling into place.
But overall, that horrible feeling that the club is just treading water while other teams are grabbing their opportunities outweighs those gains for me at this stage.

We won't win a flag with that backline.

2009 Joel will win a Brownlow.
2014 Joel will be a norm smith medalist
2016 Joel will be a premiership captain.
2018 Thank God he's already got 3 premierships.
I love how hard he tries, but we won't see a flag in a long time.
