Interesting that pretty much the whole article on the SANFL match was on FOG.

We are trying to turn him into an inside mid that plays forward by the sounds.

I'm not sure if this is a desperate attempt to save the pick or something with a chance to succeed

Projections in Fogs underage and then draft year prior to knee injury were that he was a big bodied mid/forward very much in the De Goey/Petracca mould.

He then rocked up to preseason woefully unfit(in part dt knee injury) and that was quickly put on the back burner.

He’s got the talent/capacity to play such a role, fitness is the big thing holding him back. I’m glad they’re giving him a fair go in the SANFL, could be that something special mid we’ve been crying out for...His contested work is very good, his decision making with ball/ skills are elite, it’s just getting the ball into his hands enough.

Some thoughts:

we looked Much better this week. We played really well in Patches and our top ups are ok. They are not making the mistakes of past players.

I liked O’Connors game today and liked his use of the ball by hand in centre square. He and fog were very good in there particularly the fog after half
Time

strachan is improving And is starting to take marks as the defensive ruckman in the back half. If he went down today though we were in trouble with no one to take over after Thilthorpe left the field of play

our backline looked better this week. Worrell borlase and mcasey all looked more assured this week and are going to develop into a good core group. Mcasey is looking more confident playing at this level and will benefit nfrom an extended period here his kicking was excellent

I friend of mine who has an interest in Rostrevor told me we'd made a mistake in making him a KPF.

But personally I'm in your camp, I think we've blown this one. (As talented as FOG is)

Sorry about not being clear, I'm in the "I think it has a genuine chance to succeed camp". I've always been more interested in Fog as a midfielder as a forward, bar a small period just after he got 5 against West Coast.

There is just something missing to his game to be a good shot to succeed as a key forward. That said, midfielder, where Fog is one of the biggest body in the position, and a aggressive and skilful player to boot, could just be the player to build a premiership nucleus around. Though, that's me getting way ahead of myself.

Now, now, now, that's a big comment. Not only if he's starting to look more confident with his defence (and I'm happy to let him have an extended run in the SANFL, clear he needs it), but if that can become the norm, he could be a KPD in the McGovern/Taylor/Rance mould.

So its essentially a combination of Fog not rocking up in shape (See comments about Berry being in AFL ready condition day 1) and AFC getting his initial development wrong.

I don't think you are getting ahead of yourself, I've heard a number of AFC coaches link Fog to the midfield.

I guess its just a matter of if he can actually be an AFL quality mid

Strachan been playing with a busted hand so you should see him clunk a few with a bit more confidence as the season progresses.

More the latter then the former. I'm wholly unconvinced about Fog as a pure key forward, he seems a player who has come onto the scene 20-30 years too late with how he plays.
Or 2 years early. Need to see him under the new rules.

If he can rumble through the middle so much the better

If he can play through the middle then that's a massive development, because there's no position for him in an AFL forward line. It speaks volumes for the fitness work he did over the pre-season, given that he was barely fit enough to play in the forward line at AFL level in previous years. Being fit enough to play AFL midfield is a massive, massive improvement on his behalf.

Agree with most of that. I don't think you fully comprehend the impact of the new rules if you think there is no place for lead up forwards in an AFL forward line. Might be living in the recent past a bit.

Tex has nearly kicked more goals in 2 games than he did all of last year. Let's see if Fog can cash in on that as well. Midfield rumbles added to that would be a big plus.

There's a place for lead up forwards. It's just that Fogarty isn't quick enough to play that role. To put it bluntly, there doesn't appear to be any position in the forward line which suits Fog.

I will defer judgement till we see him under these new rules. I think he has natural lead up skills and the new rules suit that.

We seem to want him in the midfield at the moment. Not a bad experiment

It's an absolute disgrace that Chayce Jones has played 24 games, the exact same amount as Fogarty.
That we haven't given Fog more than 4 games in a row is terrible management of the player.
To think that he doesn't have a role in our forward line is totally ridiculous

I agree that Jones has been gifted many of those 24 games, but so has Fog.

I'm a Fog Fan, but I can only think of 3 games where I thought he had an impact... His second match vs. Richmond (2018), 5 goal game vs. Eagles (2019) and the very next week vs. Pies (2019) where he booted 3 goals.

Just a correction.. Fog played 7 games in a row between 2019 R20 to 2020 R3.

I like what I'm hearing that we may be trying to turn him into a mid/forward, rather than just a key forward. This could be his go.

I think it is a bit of a stretch to say he had 7 games in a row when there was a 6 months gap between his 4 and 5th games

And who would want to be a new player coming into our forward line in the last few years with the delivery and coaching we have had recently

Not a stretch. A fact. But it's your right to interpret this however you wish. :thumbsu:
