Yes, he has been an amazing player but he is basically done. It is sad in a way, I felt the same way with Buddy, he just isn't able to do what, even a few years ago he was able to do easily.

The troubling thing for me was that he was back to 'bad, unselfish Tommy, looking to hit up teammates in dubious positions, instead of taking the responsibility himself after missing a fairly regulation one in the second quarter. Still, if Cameron had just converted that exquisite pass from Hawkins in crunch time, maybe we go on with it and it's less of a talking point.

For me that Hawkins pass to Cameron was symptomatic of a disappointing aspect of tonight's game: I feel like we've generally done a great job of capitalising on a selfless or courageous bit of work up the ground: a huge Jhye Clark tackle, Stewart and Z.Guthrie going back with the flight to take gutsy marks, Hawkins' vision to find Cameron. We burnt so many of those opportunities - not to say the Dees didn't mess up as many - but it was a very uncharacteristic performance from us this year.

Hopefully it gives us a bit of a kick up the backside, as off the top of my head, I'm not sure we've trailed in a fourth quarter at all this year before tonight.

Sam Newman was nursed to 300, from about his 220th game. Its nice to think coaches are loyal to players but you can rest him in the tough games and he still gets 13 or 14 games for the year and easily beats Selwood.
Yeah, but we're in the hesitation phase where he kicked 4 two weeks in a row earlier and we're waiting to see if he gets it back.

He'll play against Port, and maybe kick a goal or two. Then he'll be rested for the trip to Darwin. Then he'll come back and break the games record the week following. After that I see him coming in to cover injuries.

Very poor game from jeremy cameron and jack henry. The worst i have seem them play in a long time.

Are you a little concerned Scott could not change the game plan at halftime?
The really good teams can change the script and go against what has been so natural to them for a long time. Melbourne played us on their own terms.
Would have liked some experimental tactics to unsettle them in the second half.

I've seen Collingwood change things up at halftime after being comprehensively beaten in the first or second quarters. They still look like they have an extra gear over the rest of the competition.

Pies are back in the saddle again.

To Melbourne and Geelong I say....

Jack had a minute he'd like to have back that ended with Fritsch's sealing goal, but thought it was quite a solid performance from him otherwise.

As the game unfolded, I was pretty excited that we had Rohan up our sleeve as a sub, as it looked to be tailor-made for him to bust the game open, but besides a great early passage where he crashed a pack and followed up with a handball to set up an Ollie Henry goal, he didn't do much else, apart from a poor inside 50 option in the last quarter that resulted in a turnover.

Not concerned. I took alot of positives from tonight. Played a good side who were very hungry and at their best wih thr game played entirely on their terms all night and we still had plenty of chances to win the game. That is the sign of a good team to still have the ability to win it even when they are down.

It took everything melbourne had to get the job done, and a bit of luck as well with the bailey fritsch ball staying in like that.

A few individuals we had were incredibly off like cameron henry stewart dekoning guthrie...

When you play the style we do, the difference between a slingshot hitting the mark and being off can be 2% drop in ability on the night with a few things going wrong.

Strategically i think we backed our game in and tried to get the ball going corridor a bit more and we looked more dangerous when it pulled off, but too many of our elite kickers also struggled uncharacteriatically tonight under little to no pressure to hit the mark.

We should analyse it well and tweak some things, but also put it down to being a bit off

Yep very quiet and when he had a chance to influence the game he was well off.

Not all bad signs we still had a number of guys play pretty well, just a case of Melbourne getting us into their game and they did it very well and we didn’t really manage to string together enough passages on end to break free of it.

Look, start of the year you tell me that we play a top 4 side, lose narrowly in a slog, while getting nothing from our recognised names over 30, and I would be pretty happy that the rebuild is going well.

Think we're just trying to play him back into form.

To my eye he looks like he needs management, but he's openly said he rathers to play through sorness/poor form and come out the other side.

Expect the decision to be taken off him this week though, although the milestone game at home might force their hand.

If this continues though, it is inching closer to Mooney/Hawkins 2011 territory.

I don't think this one is management. I am giving him 4 more hours of football to turn this around

Got the impression from Scotts' presser that the call is coming, but it might still take a while.

If Neale continues his form in the VFL tomorrow, many are going to hope it comes as soon as this week, but like I said I wonder if the milestone at home plays into their thinking.

You're right though that there should be a timeline, as like Mooney once you make the call, you can't really take it back.

We can't tap Tom on the shoulder and say it's Neales time...and then after a couple weeks of poor form from Neale (as young players are prone to do) then go back to Tom.

It has to be one or the other, which is why they'll play this out as long as they can for mine.

I feel the original plan was rest Hawk for Darwin, break record at home. Nothing I've seen dissuaded me from that but I will say that if something doesn't change his career is over after the bye

Newman spent a lot of time in defense in the latter stages of his career.
Certainly by his final season he was well and truly cooked.
