Adjust the draft so anyone taken in the 5th round or later is an automatic 1 year contract.

First round 3/4 years, second through fourth 2 years and 5th onwards one year

I had posted this in the trading thread but essentially this;
Pretty simple solution to these first rounders wanting out;

First round selections = 4 year deals
Second round selection = 3 year deals
Third round selections = 2 years
Fourth round onwards = 1 year deals. This includes dokies and SSP

If you pick a s**t first rounder and want to delist, do so at one’s own peril. Furthermore, by year 4 a player is established or not in the industry, giving drafting club more power at the wheel for the first three years.

Those later selections have always been throwing darts at a draft board.

Feels like the majority of players, especially early draftees, re sign within there first year anyway. Clubs and players should have the ability to renegotiate the latter years of that deal.

By year 3, you know what you have with a player, still in contract, gives you some bargaining power.

Would be moving with the times, after all, we had kept Aaron Francis on the list for 6 years, David Myers for a decade etc.

Jon Ralph tweeted that clubs expected the bid to come after pick 22 obviously most draft rankings seem to have him before then but based on the picks we have it seems like we expect it to come after too.
A lot of clubs don’t really put much time into rival clubs FS picks because there’s no chance they’ll be able to get them so it would just be a waste of resources. As a result they’ve tended to be bid upon a bit later than the draft rankings would suggest.

I would consider a pair of future firsts for pick 4.

The fact that Wardlaw, Tsatas and Humphrey missed multiple games is worrying with our history. Having multiple firsts in a draft filled with dynamic mid/forwards could both be the safer option while still having high upside.

We could have an extremely strong hand next year.

But I want Clark if Wardlaw/Sheezel are gone.
I reckon it’s a wise move to slide back if Tsatas is the one left over from ‘the big 5’. Get an extra F2 and take a pick between 6 and 10 for Clark, Humphrey, Busslinger etc.

I really want Clark as a competitive animal next to Hobbs
So it'd need to be the hawks or suns, cos Clark won't go past Geelong.

Is Tsatas enough of a temptation for the hawks to add an F2 to 6 for 4? if not, I just grab Clark.
There's a chance we could make a play for 5 with GCS. I can't read them on that pick. do they take it, or are they focused on next year.

If Tsatas is the one left over, just pick him. Seriously, there's a reason these 5 have been the top 5 in the vast majority of draft watchers for the entire year. If Wardlaw is the one left over, pick him. In the extremely unlikely event that Sheezel is left over, pick him.

We don't need Jhye Clark.

Mahoney seemed to buck the idea of a top 5 yesterday, and I wonder if that's been the case in recent thinking that Tsatas has slid back a touch and others up.

Disagree on Clark
1-he plays very different to our mids, despite his size.
2-probably encourages a mutual parting of ways with Parish and we get 2x top 5 next year instead of 1

Agree with that. Although, there might be another club with a top 10 pick keen to do a similar deal.

Yes, Mahoney spoke of a top 3. Seems that we’re hoping someone slides out of that. If not, our pick is on the market.

Did some points sums

I'd love;
Hawks get 4 & 22
Dons get 5 & 6
GCS get Hawks and Dons F2

Clark & Humphrey/Ginbey/Phillipou
this works points wise. All about appetite for all parties
Suns lose a few points but nothing major. transfers them to next year for their academy.
Hawks move up 2 this year, bring forward a 2nd (abeit slightly later)
We get 2x top 7 picks instead of 1x top 5 and maybe that 22nd depending on Davey, and lose F2 for our troubles.

Is Clarke being talked up a bit much because he is a Falcons lad and everyone wants to diddle Geelong? Seeing it a bit on our board too since the Bowes bullshit.

Sorry if someone has asked this but if Alwyn is bid on before 22, surely Essendon do 22 to us for 48 50 52 and 65?? Its more points so a better pick will come back for later (or Munkara) than if they matched it with 22 and change. If Hawthorn include 41 Essendon would get a decent pick back...

Does Dodoro actually hate Hawthorn so much that he would cut off his nose to spite his face?! I struggle to believe that.

It depends. We might trade ahead of a bid, but if one comes in before that I daresay a F2 will have to be part of the equation. Probably your F2 and 41 for 22.

Where would Parish go though?
If it's Geelong they don't seem to be capable of offering 2 x top anything in a trade.

Hawks get 4 & 22
Dons get 5 & 6
GCS get Hawks and Dons F2
All the talk about next years draft seems to be better to hold onto any F2 rather than this years.
