Maybe a jarred knee from the vision I saw. Came back on with some taping on it but battled on well and hard at the footy as always.

Hopefully he's 100 % for next week because we need him around the coalface where we are struggling, and this will be pronounced if Kelly is out next week.

Thanks for that. Yep sure do need him. Great captain. Shame about Kelly. Just have to view a rest as a bonus.

Those of us who were there today to experience the Menzel shock were not at all surprised that our team was going to be FLAT to start with. They came to him as he was carted off the ground, and certainly an inglorious way to go into a game . That would have had a significant impact on our group. CS said as much.
So was happy to be able to not be down at any break, and to totally dominate the 2nd/2.
Gillies was replacement for Boris today, not for Taylor, that is his future role, surely. Why he cops all this flak is ridiculous. He was quite assured and useful after 1/4 time.
Stringer is a great tackler and hard ball getter, looks to have a spot.
Kelly is critical in our midfield, and I will be really peeved if he is out. There was minimal contact and no injury.
Bartel back to ?midfield best.
Taylor as we know is an excellent contested mark and accurate kick, handy he can play at both ends so well.
Scarlett is irreplacable.
Lonergan is NQR, patience required.
An 11 goal win with our current playing list is a pleasing effort, I went home pretty happy; the Menzel factor being the only dampener.

Much like over at AMMI when Geoff Allen had the heart attack in 2010,they never got going that day.And sorry I'm not a Gillies fan, agree with everything else:thumbsu:

Guthrie...This kid is going to be a great player.

Thought he was excellent today.

Schroder tried and got better as the game went on.

McCarthy was ok.

Stringer was good again.

Smedts didn't have the greatest day.

Thank god for Harry, Jimmy, Kel, Sel, SJ and Scarlo and that old bald bloke...Chappy!

Its all relative really.

Apart from perhaps one, maybe two games, Chapman has been good all year.
This is how I've seen his season so far. He was ordinary (at least by his standards) in the early part; battled against Freo and was shaky if important against Hawthorn, was decidedly poor against North, slightly better against Richmond, then began to improve markedly. So, overall, while he has been good, he's been below his typical standard. Only in the last few weeks has he really hit form.

Given the talk about his stellar preseason, I can understand why people expressed concern over his place in the team early on. Little things like that blind turn that resulted in a goal to the Dogs are rather unChapman-like.

Those saying he was finished have egg on their faces again.
Not sure they do just yet, but the eggs are certainly airborne given the upward trajectory his formline is following.

Re: Round 10 Geelong vs GWS Simonds Stadium

Stokes is in horrid form and cannot see him playing next week. Will takes some balls for Scott to drop him but plenty of excuses with the cattle to come back in.

Why? It's not like he's essential to the team. I thought his gold pass would run out when Thompson left but apparently not.

Motlop replaces him when asleep right now.

Yes, I'm not arguing that Stokes is playing great. He needs to improve. Just saying that he's also doing some good stuff out there.

JPod is playing average too and I don't hear any suggestions about dropping him.

Probably because Pods is one or only two viable key forward options we have - it's Hawkins and him, and realistically that's it.

Stokes is competing with Motlop, Byrnes, Duncan, Christensen at least, and right now is a better bet than only Byrnes. Motlop has left him in the dust.

His tendencies to slow the game down (on display today) and turn his back to goal (last week) don't help his cause either.

Watching. Him. Do. This. Does. My. Head. In.

I don't get all the hate for Stokes.

Sure he isn't playing at his peak but he is still serviceable. He is the only true forward pocket we have (Varcoe and Motlop both spend more time in the middle). He has never been a "star" and never will be. However, I feel he is extremely underrated in his on-field leadership skills and game intelligence. If you watch us play closely, he always helps give direction to the guys in the forward line. He is encouraging of of teammates, doesn't display bad body language, is unselfish and always goes hard at the ball. You can tell all the teammates love having him around. People often underestimate the impact certain players can have on team moral.

Gee..people were pretty hard on Smedts. I thought he did ok.

I know I keep rattling on ( :) ) but I really like young Stringer. We need to get game time into him because I believe he will play a lot of games for Geelong.

I thought Duncan was good too.

When it came down to it though, the old heads did the job in a pretty comfortable effort. Bartel, Kelly, Chapman Selwood, Taylor, SJ, Mackie and Scarlett were cool calm and collected most of the day.

Of the younguns, the three above, along with Guthrie, and THunt were pretty serviceable.

We will be much stronger next week.

Do you reason that is some sense the club is deliberately not playing the whole group together to make it difficult for the opposition? With that and our "strange" game plan we could see a very interesting side after the break...

Seems our set up at centre clearence is really bad the first half was very poor when kids out do senior players, hope Lappin changes the way we set up after the bye.

Honestly, reading the game day thread is embarrassing for some posters on here. Sinking the boot in using all the emotive language about how shit we are... until we turn it around and the tide turns, and then...... silence ....in some cases never making another comment. If we start doing ok it seems they have nothing to say.

Compensatory behaviour in all its glory.

I have never understood why posters like you continually whinge about other posters being critical of a player or the team when the player or the team are playing like shite. Just because fortunes turn around doesn't mean the criticism at the time was unwarranted, or that anyone has egg on their faces.

Re: Round 10 Geelong vs GWS Simonds Stadium

Was it? Kicked more goals in 2007 and 2008. Averaged more goals in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Yep,Scott changed the way they used him in 2011,but I'm sure you knew that, you know the game and you know you can't always judge a player on the number of goals they kick.
Interesting stats all the same but pointless with his role change.

So he's behind Motlop (sore), Christensen (injured) and Duncan. You may have just answered your own question about why he's playing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this. You summed up my thoughts about stokes perfectly.

Yes, spot on, Linx.

Duncan and Christensen will be spending large chunks of their time in the midfield, if not this season, then certainly next season. Stokes is better than Byrnes and can be a great combination with Motlop.
Stokes is very much required and still doing great service up forward in my view. We do actually need some forwards after all.

Watched the first 3 quarters on replay to see what Gillies and Stokes had done wrong.

Gillies had 2 frees paid against him in front of the big stand. The crowd made it clear they thought he was hard done by both times. Both times he was right with the leading forward. Other than that I did not see an error or poor decision and he had tidy disposal. Must have had a shocker last quarter!

Stokes didn't get much of it - thats a fair knock. He did hold the ball a couple of times but each time there was no one forward of him (within his range). If he had kicked to no-one and turned it over he would not have been popular either.

It was a very ordinary watch overall!

Don’t buy Menz’s dreadful injury as being the main reason for our first half. Credit to GWS who really came to play. It’s not the first time this year they’ve been competitive for a half. On yesterday’s performance they’re more advanced than GC.

Their slow starts remind me alot of I think 2010, it seems now since the Cats are the "hunted" again they start games with the mindset of "well lets see what they throw at us" instead of how they should be thinking "lets go out there and show em whose boss!".

Yep, agree there could be a bit of that but really, so what, how long do we expect them to keep up that intensity? Its been a long run for them. It's a long season and they are just starting to look like they are waking up.
Stevie J plays like he wants to win another flag, Selwood never looks anything but, a few of the others look like they are just noticing that there is a flag for the taking this year. Can you blame them? If they get going now it will be enough. And if it isn't, the future is looking good.
