MOONDOG'S PREVIEW
The most anticipated matchup of the millenium. A mouthwatering contest in the making between the heavyweight champion of the league and the challengers to the throne in the Suns, well almost. This is the contest that all Geelong fans have been salivating upon since the release of this seasons fixture. Gary Ablett up the against the team in which he's veins used to crave blue and white blood. The big questions is what kind of reception do we expect to see, not only from the passionate and loyal Geelong fans but from the players that once fed, protected and helped develop him into the player he is today.
CURRENT FORM
The new kids on the block have been brilliant in bursts but lack the experience and composure at times to put in consistant four quarter efforts, which have seen them suffer extreme defeats at the hands of their more talented rivals. They have recorded two wins against teams currently residing underneath them on the foot of the table, but continue to improve with continued development from their abundance of star draftees.
The Cats on the other hand have swept all before them this year and have so far enjoyed and undefeated start to the current quest for a third premiership in the dynasty. the reign of the Cat was over according to the supposed experts and they continue to defy history and bound on their merry way. Wins against top four aspirants, including the reigning premiers in close tussles prove that not only have this current crop of cats still got the desire, but also the mental capacity to win on the big stage.
KEY PLAYERS
GEELONG-
James Kelly- The unsung hero of the Cats midfield this year who leads the team for disposals, contested possessions and tackles. With Kelly hitting his straps and moving into a more permanent role in the midfield since the departure of Ablett , the Cats find themselves with another hard nosed, in and under tackling machine that has compensated them well since the move of their star up north. If the Suns are to be any chance of causing a boilover then Kelly’s influence on the contest must be nullified.
Joel Selwood- Seems to have improved another level with added responsibility this year, which is testiment to his maturity for such a young player. Selwood not only wins he’s own ball but constantly sends the ball into the attacking zone and creates scoring chances. The Suns must pay close attention to him at the stoppages and put constant pressure on every time he goes near the ball to limit he’s effectiveness around the ground.
GOLD COAST
Zac smith- With Ottens likely to be rested the future superstar ruckman must take advantage of an inexperienced Geelong ruck combination and give the suns first use of the ball out of the centre. He can also be an attacking weapon going forward and is quite capable of kicking multiple goals while in attack. The Cats must be careful when he drifts forward and not allow him to dominate and allow their midfield to gain the ascendancy.
Gary Ablett- The skipper is starting to hit he’s peak and dominated against the Crows in the last outing. Expect to see Geelong apply extreme physical pressure whenever he is anywhere near the vicinity of the contest and hopefully butcher him from pillow to post. If he dominates and has a big output the Suns are quite capable of getting within ten goals.
POSSIBLE CHANGES
The cats may include Ling, Mooney, Menzel and Lonergan and rest a couple of established stars to get them cherry ripe for the second half of the season. It’s hard to say what Scott has in mind but I’d give Ottens, Taylor, Enright and Wojcinski a spell this week.
The Suns will probably field the same side that took to the field in their last outing with the exception of Prestia who may be recalled to add a bit more pace and grunt against the harder Cat bodies.
PREDICTION
Its hard to see the suns getting within a bulls roar of the highly fancied Cats outfit, but I expect an even first quarter as they throw everything at the Cats in their first game at their new stadium only to be streamrolled and suffer another embarrassing defeat. A hundred point margin is my expected outcome. The Suns will be dishing out the same results in the years to come and will take away from the game a valuable learning experience.
