The only reason to bring in Vardy in now is if Orren is not fit. Otherwise it's silly not to have Orren and West.. We did alright against Pies with this combo and I think Orren is the better Tap Ruckman. I don't expect us to go with both for however many games we play in the finals. But as a team by team basis.
When Vardy was fit and firing last season with a full preseason under his belt, it was easy to see that his best work was done before half time. He noticably tired late in games and at the time Hawk was in the VFL and we were all wondering if Vardy was the answer to the 2nd ruck/forward option until he got injured against Adelaide. With no preseason and no games under his belt this season, the best Vardy can do is to play 2 1/2 quarters before getting subbed off to enable West to run out the game against all comers. I doubt if it will work at this late stage of the season.

Wow. I can see Sydney trying to kick goals via smalls/midfield again.

Yeah would have put him on ice till next year.. Get a full preseason and get ready for 2013.. but since Varcoe didn't pay off as expected they're doing another risk.

Well they know better then us.

A post touches the ball as much as Reid has this year.
You are right. But that kid will be a star.

Right now I'd give a lot up for him.
i.e A straight swap for Walker, Brown, GHS. and I like Walker a bit, Like Brown, really like GHS. :)

It might be a risk worth taking for the team this season. But it's a massive risk for the player.

There was conjecture that not only was there a possibility that Vardy wouldn't play this year but that there was a possibility that he'd never play again.

What we've now got is a kid (with unknown upside to the current squad) who has made a stunning return. But he's played 3 VFL games sandwiched with a week off because they didn't want to overload him.

So, let's say he plays and gets through. How is that body going to stand up to a possible 5 games of high intensity footy?
If he breaks down we just sub him off and keep moving forward right?

I think there's more to it than that.

In fact, I'd play him in the VFL and if needed we use a wildcard and play him in the finals. Possibly as late as week 2.[/
Don't forget Orren is unfit and has been all season, for AFL level. In those hawks/pies games which were his best, he dominated the ruck but only for a quarter or a bit more. The MC are probably sure he is well and truly over his injury, let's hope so.

Yep he is really promising but injury prone -so not sure. Need sound bodies, especially nowadays. Both the Reids bit vulnerable I reckon.

Tend to agree with those who think Stephenson should have been selected instead of Vardy.

I am not sure whether he is still injured but the whole thing seems a bit risky. But all the best to Vardy, let's hope he gets through OK and can play a role for us in September!

Not sure whether Reid being out actually helps us. It's the smaller forwards that scare me. I suppose it won't matter if we fail win enough ball in the middle. We are going to have to do it sometime, so may as well start now. Go Cats.

Vardy is a choice of playing a VFL final or having a final look at him at AFL level. Risk worth taking IMO. If he struggles, at least we know. Walker has been ok and wil probably get some confidence in VFL

Playing Vardy seems like a big gamble, given his lack of match fitness, and the potential downside for his long-term future.
However, the lack of match fitness is not quite so big a problem if they think they can get 2 and a half quarters out of him, because that's all Orren is good for in the 1sts anyway.

And in the other 85% of the match he gets aboutBu four touches.
But he makes far more contests and applies more ground pressure than simpson or O in the second ruck position.. i think the major point is that you can have both Walker and West on the ground together without compromising team balance, whereas if you play both west and orren at the same time we look to top heavy....thus we effectively limit our rotations as we prefer to only ever have one of our rucks on at a time.

Vardy is similar and more effective to walker in that we can confidently put him in a lead up role knowing he will provide a genuine option if not rucking. We can therfore accomodate him much more than a west, orren or simpson partnership.
