I refuse to let this board become a haven of umpire-bashing. Almost always they have no impact on the result of the game. Last night we had a great run in the third quarter which helped us get back in it.

The umpires did not "cost us the game".

Agree. Umpires make plenty of poor decisions, but it's annoying when people use that as a reason for losing and then go on to claim there is some kind of conspiracy against us. It just doesn't work like that.

Don't forget we were on the receiving end of plenty of favourable decisions from the men in green/red/yellow/whatever colour they're wearing this week as well.

It's not a good look when supporters go trashing umpires after a loss when there were plenty of other factors contributing to it, no point selectively plucking out one factor that was largely beyond our control.

Likewise, if we'd won the game and Pies supporters had begun complaining about umpiring that would be pretty silly, they gave away a lot of free kicks as a result of poor discipline and sloppy tackling/contesting.

Ultimately our inability to play more than a quarter of good footy and counteract Collingwood's press cost us the game, in addition to the fact we were outplayed for the majority of the game by a better side.

Just noted on the Age footy website that Steve had a "minor calf problem".
Also noted the piece about Heritier gobbing off. The turnover king plays his one good game for the year and can't shut his gob. Who does he think he is Heath Shaw.:p

I think people are missing my point here, we were terrible last night absolutely rubbish i could barely watch. We made skill errors, missed opportunities, got killed in clearances etc.. But we still managed to put our noses in front through sheer will and all while with half our VFL side in, until an obvious error due to the lack of knowledge of the rules by so called professional umpire that killed our spirit. I found that bloody frustrating more so then our kids skill errors, and i think he should be held accountable.

Yep that's pretty much what I said. Did not cost us the game, by holy F it is frustrating and must be more so to the players etc who are busting their arses, not just sitting back on the couch with a few frothies.

We definitely have some areas we need to improve on and a loss maybe will drive that home more so than a win, but it's never fun losing to Collingwood.

In the first quarter there was the stuff we've seen all season; chiefly the opposition ruck dominance, particularly evident at contest in their forward line, and again a poor showing in clearances department, it's hurt us all season. In this particular game though additionally we struggled early on with Collingwood forward pressure, I also thought Scott was stitched up on the Bartel vs Harry O'Brien loose man decision. Credit to Buckley, it's not often Scott is out coached and these were two things we haven't seen work effectively by other opponents. Despite getting the early jump, I thought we sorted most of it out by quarter time and it was only a few close decision going against us along with a big final effort from Collingwood that stopped the usual script. Hats off to the Pies for this one.

My view on a few individual performances:

- Hawkins looks fitter, he's finally moving well again and it showed in his 4 goal performance on Reid. Actually I think we've now got all our KPP's fit and firing. Lonergan on Cloke was magnificent, Pods as a swing man was a significant contributor too. Pods defended well, provided an option as a lead up forward and took some some strong grabs inside 50 late in the game. Taylor perhaps a bit quieter than usually but he's been in red hot form and still soundly beat Lynch only conceding the one long goal from 55 out.

- Small defenders on the other hand, Pies got the better of us here. Dwyer, Krakour & Blair kicked 9 goals between them, but the vast majority came from counter attacks as we coughed it up rebounding out of our defensive 50 and these are tough to stop. I think it was three fold;
1. We didn't work hard enough presenting in the midfield
2. We lost too many 1:1 contests in the corridor
3. Disposal wasn't good enough.
A lot of this can be attributed to Collingwood pressure (again hats off) but I think a lot of it can also be attributed to a few things on Geelong's end.

- Kelly, Stevie J & T-Hunt were badly missed. They are three extremely important players for us because they win so much ball through the corridor. They more than anyone in the team (Stokes another) are the ones that continually present as we rebound out of defensive 50 and the work in traffic though the corridor is immense. Even when it does break down these three are still important going the other way shutting down just the types of attack Collingwood destroyed us with. As good as Caddy, Shroeder and G.H.S were (and they were fine), We can't expect the same level from them as Kelly, Stevie J and T.Hunt.

- For me Blicavs as a ruckmen has almost run it's course. He's done very well, continually showed improvement and has a bright future. But I can't wait to see McIntosh in there. The contested marking, better tap work and bigger stronger body at contest I think will make a big difference to our two consistent weaknesses. Clearances & hit outs.

All in all we're well placed, from here with Port, Gold Coast, GWS, Bye, Brisbane up in the next few weeks. It's not inconceivable to expect to be 11-1 going into Rd 14. For me getting Chappy, Stevie J, T-Hunt, Kelly, Varcoe & McIntosh fit an in form is a priority along with maintaining fitness of our other players. A spate of general soreness and squad rotation from here until finals (from me at least) will be well received.

what did you make of West's game?

To me, he looks like he's at the stage of his career where he is now beginning to steadily improve, it's not a weekly improvement but it's been very gradual this season in the manor he has taken it upon himself to impact certain contests.
As they always say, 50 games is usually the time when players begin to rise and I can't see him getting dropped now.

I think McIntosh and West are going to forge a very strong ruck duo.

He's been solid, I still think he's almost a perfect no.2 ruck men, but even as a no.1 he's improved again this year and should be commended for that. I still don't like him as a no.1 ruck though, he's not big enough and too rarely gives us first use and I don't think that's going to change. That's a big problem when facing 60+ ruck contests a game. As a no.2 though where he might face half that, I reckon he'd be great. Rather than being below average in the ruck as a no.1 I think he'd be above average as a no.2 ruck men, defensively is where his strengths lie, I reckon he's moved into the upper echelon for ruck men in that regard. I can't remember a single ruck that had a significant impact (outside ruck contests) against us, in fact I can't think of an opposition ruck men that's even kicked a goal on him. If he could take a few more contested marks or have a bit more impact resting forward he's been one of the best no.2 rucks in the league.

Good number 2, IMO well ahead of Blicavs or Vardy but we're missing McIntosh IMO.

Don't get me wrong, I'm ALL for umpire-bashing when it's actually warranted, but the umpires had little to no effect in how we lost last night.
Yeah, and plenty of the decisions went our way, except for a few toward the end.

We only played quarter and had to work back from a 28 point deficit. That's why we lost.

Thought Poodle was missed a lot last night too, as Pendlebury had far too much room to move.

We will see over the next few weeks that he's actually pretty important to our side I think.

Was discussing that exact point at the game when Pendles was wandering around as free as a bird. T.Hunt has become a vital component for us. Offers a professional shut down job plus key speed through the middle which showed out last night.

NM are not missing HMac.
Here's hoping all those who think he'll be our salvation are not going to be distraught if his injuries continually resurface.

Been away for weekend but manged to watch the game. Was initially very disappointed with the result and angry we had started the game (again) giving the opposition a head start. But now I'm actually quite happy we lost because hopefully it mean that a few of the guys that may have been getting fat heads, and believing that we were unbeatable regardless of how we started may finally get a long overdue reality check.

Yes, we have been good this year, but we have been like a guy playing Russian Roulette. It was only a matter of time before we would get done giving away another start. When Bartel handballed it to Sidebottom in that first minute you could tell we "weren't on". I knew then that we were going to get done. Kudos to the playing group for coming out at half time and rectifying their intensity, flair and all use. But they just seemed this time to think they'd done their job at 3/4 time and revert back to the lazy ways of the first half. Having 10 inside 50's against us to none in that last 1/4 showed it.

I hope that the team don't just think we'll waltze over to SA and take care of Port. I would hope to see a far more determined outfit next week.

Clearly the loss of Kelly, T.Hunt (v. Badly missed) and SJ has to be taken into consideration. That midfield we had last night with Corey, H-S and Shroeder was too slow and needs tweaking even if we are still waiting for Varcoe and T.Hunt return.

We quickly need to get someone else to at least attempt his role for the next month. Somebody who can run with, stop, block, then run off and kick his own goals. Maybe Bundy; that role is critical enough. We have Corey currently fit enough and good enough to be our extractor, along with Selwood, and Kelly eventually.

Selwood is either being tagged well or having a really bad patch. Needs a good game to lift his spirits. If he lifts his game I am positive that Duncan, GHS, Caddy, etc. will follow suit. Also, jimmy had the worst first quarter I have ever seen him play. Shows a lot about his character and skill that he willed himself back into the game. We didn't get over the line but it will give him and his younger teammates confidence that you can will yourself back into the game after a rocky start. All in all :all of the pressure is on collingwood and hawthorn ;we have a easy run to possibly rest tomahawk ; get the opportunity to play players such as selwood and Duncan into form; lock a top 4 possition; and get ready for a premiership assault. All is well down in cat land. :)

Interesting to me that Simpkin was in the votes for Hawthorn, albeit v GWS. Would he have been in the mix for us given his strengths, this week? Will he be one of the few we let go that we will regret? I did feel last year that I would rather have kept him than Sheringham, maybe even Stringer, but I guess his age went against him.
