Women's Footy AFLW season 2023 - Season 8

Worst part of all this is we’re still very likely to finish higher than WC this season (and next?), meaning second dip at the wa talent for the near future. This is why I reckon we’re screwed until a national draft (or de facto thereof) comes in.
It begs the question

Is a second pick in WA better than a 10th pick in a national draft?

Some years yes, others no

In 2 years time zippy fish night even go pick 1 in the national, maybe we tank next season lol

This is indeed the question. It comes down to the relative strengths of the junior systems in each state. It feels to me — and this is all feels-based, I'll readily admit — as though the quality (and the quantity of quality) has increased faster in Vic than locally over the last 3 or 4 years. The concessions to WC have seen them getting multiple bites before we do, but if the local quality is on par with Vic, then being made to make do with the 3rd or 4th best WA player should be disadvantaging us only relative to WC, not the rest of the competition. Yet WC are still trash, and we're going downhill (albeit for lots of reasons, and not all of them to do with access to draft talent).

In a given year the top 3 WA players might sit comfortably within the top 15 nationally, and we'd be losing out. And it's possible that the local comp will suddenly catch up in a short time. But for the moment, we're relying on finding hidden gems and polishing up rough stones picked up from outside the conventional pathway.

Every time we try and go forward it’s chaos ball. No run and carry, no overlap play. There’s no skills or organisation.
