Who knows? No doubt if Geelong and Adelaide were in communication then West Coast and North (in this instance) would be.
So what you're saying is.
Its like the Dangerfield situation?
Both clubs will have likely worked out the best scenario?
Like what?
Not sure how team in finals is a valid excuse.Sigh.
Fathers illness, Brayshaw incident, possibility of a bigger offer if Lycett leaves, team still in finals. They are all possible reasons for a delay and something that Eagles fans will hold onto for as long as possible.
It's not until it is.
Sigh.

Wouldn't it be a boost to the team if he announced?
Sigh.
Shirley though ( I know you're the brother but it is also a boys name) if he was staying the messaging would be "We're working through details of the contract, I'm sure something will get done, I love it here and can't wait for next season"
In fairness he was talking about factors Eagles fans will hold on to, not that he specifically subscribed to them. Every club has supporters that read too much into things and it will be that way until Gaff puts a pen to somebody's contract.

Why would North Melbourne not want to trade? He would be the second best player on your list straight up, would be lucky to find someone that accumulate like him with any first round pick, is an elite talent. Seems crazy you still wouldn’t pursue him at least a little if we matched.
If North Melbourne truly do have the opportunity to bring Gaff in, however it is, would seem like a big middle finger to the fans if you just decided you’re not getting him the way you(north) want to and decided to stop.
If Kelly is coming next year as well, would b a great player to have next to.
I reckon that what will happen is Kelly leaves Geelong for West Coast and West Coast give up for their compo pick for him.
Essentially Kelly for Gaff. It isn't "market value" for Gaff but it is a actually a decent enough swap and would keep the fans happy.
Wouldn't be at all surprised if North did some deal ala what we did with Skt Kilda and Dal Santo and sent Pruess west very cheap too.
Kelly and Preuss for Gaff and pick 197. All good.
Nothing will keep the fans happy in way of compo received for Gaff, a fair few of us also don't rate Kelly as much as Geelong fans do.
Out of academic interest, what would be a fair open market trade for Gaff?
Two first rounders would be the ceiling IMO. He's a gun player in his prime who is exceptionally durable.
Yeah open market would be two firsts, preferably one in the top 5 and both between 1-15.
If it were to be a pick and a player, what level of player would you be thinking from North.
Say the trade was going to be this year and it was pick 10 (in reality about 13 after compos but its nominally 10) then who would the player be?
Honestly I'm not that clued into Norths list so I'll choose whichever kid you'd want to not lose.

As long as you don't take Nathan Hrovat we'll be ok. Gonna be a superstar that kid.
We wouldn't be offering him $1.2m per year if we were also going to give up anything significant by way of trade.
Don't stop there, continue onto the "it will be a bad look for future players North target" angle.
If Kelly is coming next year (and the club believes he is), and Polec is coming this year, then that is likely our 2018, 2019 and 2020 first rounders spoken for. What would we trade for Gaff?
Something better than a pick in the early 20's.
It's not hard!!
In fact its been discussed 50 times already.
But Norths fans don't want to consider giving anything up to land one of the best mids in the country.
