Training update 21/1

A busier feel to training this morning with a return to Holden Centre and the buzz of the AO crowds filtering into the region across Swan St.

It was a relatively long session, totalling almost 3 hours, held in pleasant conditions in the low 20's.
It was however warmer in the sun given very little relief on the Glasshouse side of the ground and my cap, sunglasses, drink bottle and 30+ were required.

Much of the focus today was on stoppages and running work. A lot of the drills and run-throughs have been oft-seen in earlier pre-season sessions.
Running for the main group is in pairs. Up and down the centre square. The leader of the pair, if one emerges, is rewarded with a handball from the coach to be received while fatigued and at top pace.

Early in the session, the groups broke into 3 zones, based upon positions
Defenders - did some one on one-style work on a lead
Forwards - concentrated on 2 teams of which one had possession in the forward half and was leading while the other team defended. 3 passes and then a team could shoot for goal. This group included Goldsack notably
Mids - played keepings off in 2 teams, with a turnover if the ball hit the ground

Match simulation was set up around stoppage work, both centre bounces, around the grounds and from throw ins.
As we've noted in recent updates, players were in 2 teams, moved the ball on from stoppages and then, after turnover-causing intercept marks or scores, players were summoned via whistle to find Kevin White, run around him and return to position. Sometimes this was done via a jog to the goal at either end and the 2 groups then heading in a line around the boundary, at pace, to meet at centre wing as the finish point.

The most notable feature of this running was the consistency of Josh Daicos as the fastest (fittest) player on every occasion that I can recall. He consistently streeted his Group and was the first player in from either side on every occasion. It's a sign of his intent this season and augurs well for his prospects of getting a game in JLT1 and building from there. Maynard and Moore were other more notable finishers on the other side.

Of the players that I noticed a little more often in play
Mids - Adams in and under and quite a bit of linking up between Pendles & Steele. Daicos in later drills went OK too.
Forwards - Stephenson and WHE were the most potent targets on a lead amongst the forwards. Cox went OK too in the air.
Defenders - Moore was the standout defender (again) and will be a key to our prospects this season. Maynard was another notable as he swept the ball from side to side.
I would note that both the Irish boys, Tohill as a forward and Keane in particular (defence) showed a bit in the air.

Note also that Moore was responsible for kicks ins when that was practised on the day. He's well suited to the role I think given his leg speed and generally neat kicking. The ball will be 70m away from goals quite quickly.

Later drills were focussed on more keepings off-style in a confined area and an effort to cause turnovers.

Of note today was the relatively long list of absentees and partial participants still. It's a cautious approach perhaps, but there is a significant number of (quality) players who didn't feature in the match simulation. Almost more than did play, with Matthew Boyd and Tarkyn Lockyer donning the boots accordingly, each looking enviably fit given their age. It was nice to see Aish join in the main group after post season surgery. Langdon another who was generally missing in the pre-Christmas main training sessions.

Of those who missed the match simulation/stoppage, more competitive work

Unsighted at training at all - Howe, Dunn & Grundy

Quaynor - who took it very easy today other than a few gentle laps. Presumably since a head knock at training last week it was precautionary

Treloar - who worked much of the day with Elliott on running and a little semi-contested work
Elliott - see above. Both of this pair were relatively involved in some less strenuous keepings off drills later in the day and both moved OK

Scharenberg - who ran lots of laps and does look fit. His warm up work, where players run with an exaggerated knee lift and then break off either direction did show him to be moving well. He was joined by Atu Bosenavalugi and Flynn Appleby from memory in their lap running group

Crisp, Reid and Beams - ran in a group of 3. it was the most active I had seen Crisp this pre-season. In fact about the first i had seen him on the field

Levi, Wells & Broomy - ran as a group of 3. Broomy may have participated in a bit of keepings off with the main group by foot late in proceedings while Wells and Greenwood played kick to kick with each other.

De Goey virtually did nothing again today, which is a concern. A bit of light running and a few snaps shots

Will Kelly was also pretty quiet, but moved pretty well in the warm up drill around the running with an exaggerated knee lift over short hurdles. Some advancement from his 1st appearance just before Christmas, where he tended to be working with Wells.

3 key takeaways
- Josh Daicos as the smokey for breakout player this season
- Darcy Moore to perhaps be our key senior player to make a difference this season
- Still quite a list of quality players on light or reduced duties

Anyhow, that's a wrap from me. Invite any other comments from observers.

Thanks mate.

But damn, that's a lot of quality not in the main group. Sigh.

I noticed those absent, but nothing to be concerned about. Grundy will miss 2 weeks with a bruised toe. Howe attended a funeral in Tasmania.

I definitely noticed how fast Daicos has gotten. Very fit and lots of speed on that one.

Lots of players impressed. Elliot, Moore, Roughy. Obviously a few players on a restricted or specific conditioning program. IE: Beams, Crisp, De Goey, Wells, Levi.

There was definitely lots of match sim.

I kept hearing a name throughout the session. I thought he was part of the team. Ralph was everywhere. I realize he is an academy player. But he was training fantastically.

Chris Mayne was VERY vocal amongst the group. Getting around the boys, and telling them to keep up standards and get around one another. Putting his hand up for leadership group? Was my thought. But it was nice to see.

Chris just has a brilliant attitude- wants to leave nothing in the locker room.
A real good egg.

Though I’m sure it’s not to be in the leadership group, more just the way he is.

Excellent report and thank you. Some concerns about the number of players either missing or on light duties as we approach Feb.

Unsure how to take the light duties - IF - it's about managing loads in an effort to curb the pre-season injuries that have cursed us all good.

However the other side of the coin is darker . . . .

Daicos is a man possessed this year feels like he is out to prove a point.

For all the Moore negativity (me included) he will make Us chasing May redundant, if he can play 20 games this year we can go all the way.

Stevo needs to back it up so hopefully had the right attitude

Lovin’ what Keane & Tohill are showing, especially keane, from everything I’m hearing he is fair dinkum committed!

Depth will be the key for us this year and we have truck loads of it, clearly the best in the AFL

Is Tarkyn Lockyer likely to play many games this year? :p

Liking the Daicos reports over the summer. Hope he makes a spot his this year. Have said it a bit but he reminds me a bit of a right footer Lachie Hunter.

Thanks for the report Albert Parker. Nice to hear Daic's has stepped up on the track, expect big things this year. How are Murphy and Tyler Brown going? They're another 2 players I expect to show great improvement this year.

Hi mate, I watch these guys with interest too. Tyler has shot up in height (now even taller than Murphy!) but remains very slight. I think he might be a better shot than Callum to make the grade though given his height and possibly speed. I haven't seen much of him on game day though to make a fully informed opinion.
Nathan continues to develop (physically he's now at 192cm) has good fitness and courage.

Neither is dominating in training and demonstrably saying 'pick me' for Round 1 at this stage, although Crisp's slow return may give Murphy a shot.

Thanks a lot for the reports, everyone. Much appreciated from HK!
I'm not as far away as Hong Kong, but (being in Adelaide) I still can't just "drop in" to watch training anytime I feel like it! So these reports are very much appreciated. They help keep things interesting during the long, dull, summer months!

I would assume if Crisp isn't right Quaynor would be the obvious replacement.

Jack Crisp hasn’t missed a game since joining us, the guy surely doesn’t get injured.
He plays.

:)

I think I will go to tomorrow’s session and not Friday since fri is going to be 41!

Good point re weather. I planned to miss on Wednesday as a reduced session and possibly no match sim accordingly, which I prefer to watch.

Yes, perhaps, but it depends upon match ups and Murphy (192cm) is more the height of Crisp (190cm). Both IQ and Murph have similar endurance, so it may depend upon the height and aerial capacity of the opponent they have in mind. If a smaller, quicker, stronger-style opponent then Quaynor (180cm) might be preferred over Aish (184cm) or Murphy. Given Parfitt, Dahlhaus and Ablett are all relatively short, perhaps Quaynor is the better fit?

Daicos will be hard pressed for a spot in the 22, but a positive he's giving himself a chance on the training track.

He will be hard pressed, but Greenwood is currently one of the least physically prepared for a new season at present. Aish, Mayne, Varcoe might also offer up opportunity from our finals team as mid to smaller types. Does the team need Sier to overcome Geelong, now that we have Beams to add to our midfield depth? There are various combinations and if Daicos stands up, to the extent he has at training thus far, then he gives himself a genuine shot.

Unless Sier shits the bed between now and Rd 1 he’s a lock over Daicos.

Although I don’t share the concern over the rate at which individual programs are ramping up I loved the report overall!

1. Even if he did shit the bed, I suspect he'd keep it quiet.
2. Would a player get dropped if he shat the bed? I expect that it'd simply warrant a personalised training session or two.
