Spots are gonna be almost impossible to get into that midfield (except for Beams). Defense may be a little easier in the temporary time. Forward just as hard I'd think.
Just loving the competition for spots.

Competition for spots is going to be good this year,
We have a very good group of young players who will push hard the older ones to get their spot.
Best depth we have had for a long time

Training Report: Wednesday 23 Jan. 2019

Not Training
Brodie Grundy: appeared late in the session, presumably after treatment inside.
Matt Sharenberg

Modified Training:
Levi Greenwood - didn't do a lot
Tay Adams: walked about and chatted, but didn't train
Jamie Elliott
Ben Reid
Dayne Beams - did 100 m runs at 50% for the most part
Jack Crisp - ditto
Daniel Wells
Brayden Maynard
Tyson Goldsack
Tom Langdon

The players began arriving at about 9:50 and they were still strolling in at 10:15.
The main group went straight to running and manoeuvrability drills, whilst quite a large group just did kick to kick in front of the Glasshouse. These players were: Sidebottom, Pendlebury, Josh Thomas, Max Lynch, Jordan "The Mummy" Roughhead, Ben Reid, Brayden Maynard, Darcy Moore, Sier, Mayne, Wells, Greenwood and Aish.

Clearance Work
There was a lot of running and kicking practice today, but one drill caught my eye and I watched this for about 30 minutes, as three groups rotated through. The players didn't actually do anything here, but watched and listened as Garry Hocking gave very detailed instructions. Five other coaches watched on including Bucks, Harvey, Rocca, Rivers and Sanderson.
There were 6 players in yellow being instructed where to stand and 6 red players in an arc at the back. I caught only minimal snippets from Hocking, but it appeared this was a stoppage/clearance set-play instruction. I did hear Hocking mention, ball ups and throw-ins and watched as the players moved to different set-ups. One player (Will HE) was used as the 'protected player moving through with the ball. At least, this is what I think was happening. I'd be interested to hear if there were any other observers there this morning who can tell us their take on this drill. I haven't seen this happen before; I imagine these things happen indoors and maybe this is why the players didn't actually 'participate'.

Later there was a drill involving 6 backs and 6 forwards. A long high ball was kicked to the forward line and defenders battled forwards man on man.
Forwards: Reid, Checkers, Goldy and Tohill, Sidebottom
Backs: Moore, Keane, Howe, Kelly, Madgen
Moore was very vocal during this drill. I've been very impressed with Moore over the summer. Let's hope he can stay fit.
Another who has taken my eye is Nathan Murphy. He doesn't do anything fancy; he doesn't take hangers or win every sprint, but he's always involved and with ball in hand, rarely botches it. I'll be very surprised if he isn't in our best 22 before too many games into the season.
Isaac Quaynor, also looks as if he could slot straight in. He's quick and talented. I suppose it's a matter of whether he can adapt to the game plan and can force his way in; it's a crowded field down back.

Happy to try and answer any of your questions.

Awesome Apples.

Is Reid being managed, do you think?
Any sign of Broomhead or Wells in the drills, or they still a long way off?

Loving your Apples reports.

Always easy to follow what you’re conveying; as if I’m almost there.

I was surprised to see Shaz jostling in a marking contest. I thought it'd be a bit early for that as he'd be putting his knee under a fair bit of stress.
Yeah, even if its against another coming back from injury, Broomy. But he did well, didn't seem under any stress. This is a good sign.

Amazing attitude is our Berger boy.
Just a real classy guy.

Won’t leave anything behind in his quest to be our back gem for years to come.

All Poise.

How did De Goey train? Has Elliott stepped up his training at all?

I reckon one big session a week is probably enough for Sharenberg at the moment. There's no point in rushing him. Second half of the year is when we will need him firing.
Agreed, and that's huge enough given it's only been 6 months since his surgery.
