Are Hawthorn going to do a Brisbane?

If they do, I reckon their supporters might reckon it was worth it. They were shit in the mid-noughties too, for all of two years, sadly they bounced back.
But I don't see them doing a Melbourne/Carlton/Brisbane and being at the bottom for an extended period.

Have a few getting old but they are still a destination club for FA and players wanting out of other clubs.
Why are Hawthorn a destination club?

The training base is way out in Mulgrave, hardly a dream spot compared to clubs like Melb, Rich, Coll, Carl and even NM who have bases in the inner city.

They sell games to Tassie, again would a player really do that when they can go to a club who doesn't travel as much.

They have lost more players than most due to FA.

When they drop off out of the finals, hurry up for fecks sake, why would a player choose to spend most of their time in Mulgrave for a battling club??

By which I mean drop off a cliff. Maybe not this year, but all their key players, espically their midfield are old, and there's every chance they could all retire/have a huge form drop all at the same time. Simple question, are Hawthorn going to slowly slide down the ladder or are they going to crash from the top 4 to the bottom 4 over 12 months?

Brisbane 2001 and 2002 : Won the QF, PF, and won the GF
Brisbane 2003: Lost the interstate QF to Collingwood, won the SF, won an interstate PF against Sydney, who beat 1st placed Port in week 1, before slaughtering their QF opponent Collingwood by 10 goals.
Brisbane 2004: Won the QF and the PF, lost the GF

Hawthorn 2013 and 2014: Won the QF, PF and won the GF
Hawthorn 2015: Lost the interstate QF to West Coast, won the SF, won an interstate PF against the 1st placed team Freo, before slaughtering their QF opponent West Coast by 10 goals
Hawthorn 2016: Out in straight sets?

Notice how well they line up, espcially 2003 and 2015, one year before their dynasties ended?

lol we've won a premiership in every decade since our first.

I think you're more hoping to see us follow your mob off that cliff as opposed to thinking it'll actually happen.

lol as opposed to joining a club with so much self importance but only two flags in 58 years to show for it all?

We were a destination club for a few years when we were a premiership chance.

When the oldies go we will have plenty of $ to throw around I guess.

Equal top of the ladder with seven first year players (who look OK in the main) meh.

And if you think people are HFD that we are picking up free agents, just wait till those aging stars retire we haven't really got going picking up your champion players yet - there'll be more whining then a planeload of POMS.

more to the topic, we do need to be aware. Brisbanes drop off is one thing, but Hawthorn premiers 86/88/89/91 broke 1993 nearly merging 1996 is close enough for many inside to be ensuring that history doesn't repeat. There MUST be a 'thing' Melbourne and Richmond both haven't recovered from the fall off a dynasty period: its been decades now.

Fairly doubtful, reckon they've got enough depth across the park (backline perhaps questionable) and talent in the 24-28 bracket to avoid a big fall. Always the possibility they'll trade in more foot soldiers from other clubs and make that work. Brisbane weren't exactly awful in the 5 or so years post-2004 anyway and (from memory) never finished below 11th-12th.

Even if Hawthorn did spend 2-3 years in the cellar, I'm sure they wouldn't be too uncomfortable if it meant acquiring some decent picks and developing youngsters in preparation for another flag tilt. St Kilda and the Bulldogs have bounced back okay since their post-2010 purges.

Considering several big name players are close to retirement, there are opportunities for players that seek a new club so they should be able to attract talent, Mulgrave isn't far from the inner city compared to say Blacktown being close to inner Sydney.

Always remember, past performance is no guarantee of future results.

An early to mid 20s bloke who is cashed up, do you want to live in Richmond/Sth Yarra and have a quick commute to work, enjoy all the slick trendy bars n cafe's of the area....or commute to Mulgrave?

Considering most of the Hawks players live around Brighton, if you live in Richmond/South Yarra, the trip wouldn't be too far.

Hawthorn have had problems filling the huge hole that Roughy left.
He is without doubt our most important player.
Still top of the ladder and four wins from a fourpeat.

But Im sure you're all right and Clarkson has given no consideration to the age of his mids........he's probably unaware.

Better all hope no one tells him.

We'll do a Jimmy and hang around like bad BO.

no way will hawthorn fall off a cliff like the lions did. brisbane/leigh matthews have said that at the time they were going for history at the expense of the future, brisbanes hard earned lesson has been a a template of how not to rebuild from a dynasty, the hawks are too smart to let it happen to them.

the fall will be inevitable, from where they have been there is only one way to go, i see them still as a great chance of winning it this year followed by a gradual fall down the ladder and to stagnate for a few years around the 7th to 12th positions on the ladder.

Like you guys after 2010.

We will have rebuild and go again like you have.

I agree you're not stuffed. You'll be ok. But I doubt you'll do as well as Geelong. We were lucky that we had Selwood, Hawkins and Taylor as 25 year olds or less at the end of 2011. That's 3 guns to build a midfield, forward line and defence around which puts you a long way towards being a good team. Hawthorn have a fair bit of talent in their younger players but I don't know that any of them are of that calibre in such important positions which makes things harder.

Remember when the Swans were going to fall down the ladder every year from 2009?

With Free Agency there is every chance the Hawks go buy Fyfe next year, trade for a few half decent top ups (Vickery?) and keep on rolling in the top 8.
