Fremantle have finalised a trade that will see key forward Ariana Hetherington head to North Melbourne

Fremantle have finalised a trade with North Melbourne, that will see key forward Ariana Hetherington head east, in return for pick 51 in the 2024 Telstra AFLW Draft.


Hetherington was signed as a replacement player in 2023 and was quick to make her mark by making a debut in round 1 of the 2023 season, playing 12 games across two seasons.


Working hard on her craft, Hetherington trained as a key forward and a ruck, and kicked her first AFLW goal against GWS in week 9 of the 2024 season.

AFLW List Manager Darryn Fry thanked Hetherington for her commitment to the Purple Army over the past two seasons.

“Ari has been a strong contributor to our program, both on and off the field,” Fry said.

“We thank Ari for her contribution to the Club and wish her all the best for her endeavours over at North Melbourne.”

The North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos have bolstered their key position stocks after securing utility Ariana Hetherington in a trade with Fremantle on Wednesday afternoon.

Hetherington arrives at Arden Street as the Kangaroos send pick No.51 west to Fremantle.

A former basketballer and rugby 7s state-team player, Hetherington joined the Dockers as a replacement player ahead of the 2023 season.

The 25-year-old has since played 12 games, including eight in 2024, rotating through the ruck and forward line.

“We are excited to add to our key position depth through the arrival of Ariana,” North Melbourne AFLW list manager Flynn Loft said.

“Ariana has shown her versatility to play multiple roles across her two seasons with the Dockers, and we look forward to watching her continue her development in our program.”

Nothing that hasn't already been posted. But I feel the pressure to try say something of interest...

Um. Pick 51 is what we also drafted Jasmine Ferguson with in 2021, so a similar return here would go alright.

Think I've googled her in the past to find out if she's any relation to similarly sized Tanya Hetherington (classy rebound defender from Diamond Creek, now Swans assistant coach). Doesn't seem to be the case.

I like this acquisition. I think she's more a key forward rather than a ruck. I've seen her play for Freo before and think she's better as a forward.
Might be a Shierlaw replacement after she retires.
