Exactly Dan. That's the difference. Reactionary disposal vs thoughtful disposal. It was from the range of experience levels though which concerns and shits me.
I also agree with Dannnnnnnnnn on this.
In fact it seemed like backsliding to the McCartney era. That's what we did so well last year : we won the contested ball by having massive numbers around the contest then got slaughtered/dispossessed when the ball came out.

We had quite a few injuries- 4 changes i think, cats smashed us at the contested possesions and we got beat by 8 points by a side that has one of the biggest home ground advantages going around

On top of this the little fella played a great game not all that bad

Was another slog of a game but keep the faith, winning five in a row is a tough ask in what most be one of the most even sporting comps in the world.

Luke Dalhaus did indeed have one of his best games but I'd like to see someone else help out in the tackling and burrowing depratment. The young dreadlocked Dal was always good for a goal or two but now he's always deep in the congestion. He's a creative player up forward when he gets the chance. Someone else could crack in there once in a while and free him up.

Why are we so afraid to have a ping at goal? So much pissing about with dinky-dink handballs and no-one brave enough to have a shot. Mind you our set shots are abysmal and powder puff efforts half the time. Just put your boot through the ball.

So many forward 50s, so few marks, so few shots. Cats defence was very good though. And then when we turn it over, they found a loose man just enough to hurt us.

Caleb Daniel great in traffic again but his tackles never stick, no surprise given his age/stature.

Another poor game to watch, teams are afraid to open up against us because of our power and speed. Give us a couple of years and we'll be dominating teams physically in a game like that. We still can't outmuscle a canny team like Geelong in an intense game but we will. Back in about
2006 we played a couple of hard games like that against the Cats which were settled by a single point. They went on to greater things. So will we.

Ugly game of footy today, Geelong were good at holding the ball in when they had no option and releasing it when they did. I can only remember 1 holding the ball against Mackie. And 1 throwing the ball. Stringer got pinged for rough tackle, the player had no intention of releasing the ball WTF.... and a throw (fair enough)

No Prior opportunity is a joke, Geelong hatched the ball all day to their benefit, Dogs ran and tried to to keep the ball moving, albeit made errors. Personally would much rather watch a team continually move the ball, rather than play hatch an egg.

This game of Footy is turning to Crap, If unpires paid more holding the balls the game would move quicker, more scores and less stoppages.

FWIW In my opinion prior opportunity is gone when you decide to take possession of the ball, because you always have the option to knock/punch it on.

This one interpretation would restore my enjoyment of the game...........

Breaking news Ferrari will no longer paint their cars red after
watching vision of the Dogs Vs Cats game. On a serious note
was the ball an explosive or something, never seen players so
keen to give it off by hand. Hopefully that was the VFL game
i just watched and the AFL is on at 11.30 am tomorrow.

Dannnnnnnnnn words quite prophetic concerning lack of
aerial ability, football was the loser today that was almost
unwatchable. I hate Geelong, so enough from me.

I think we are all frustrated at losing a game we shouldn't have lost. It's OK to vent Next week i suppose

Can you expand on how Daniel played?
Busy first quarter. Very quiet in the second but came back into it in the second half.

He is listed as only (!) 78.9% DE for his 9 kicks and 10 HBs but it just seemed every time he had the ball he thought his way through it - what was the best thing to do with it? Most of the time it was not just an effective disposal but one that put the recipient into a position where he had an even better chance at an effective disposal, i.e. to launch an attack. He is listed as having 5 CPs and 13 UPs (that's only 18 - not sure where his 19th "P" came from!) but he was regularly working in the guts, so even with a UP he was usually delivering it under pressure.

For a comparison, the sort of thought/execution that goes into his disposal is characteristic of Stevey J when he has space. If he can regularly deliver like that he'll be great value for us. His 19 disposals were worth maybe 25 from most other players.

On the negative side he missed a few tackles according to the Game Day thread (I missed seeing that but I'll believe it).

He also failed to record any HOs.

But to finish on a positive: on a day when we only kicked 9 goals he is credited with 2 GAs. (5 others in the side had 1 GA, no-one else had 2).

All in all, a pretty handy outing for a 19yo third gamer. (Copying in footy4ever who was interested in CD's progress)

In the clinches Stevens was a huge out today. Would have been the perfect match up for Caddy.

Someone mentioned earlier that our vice captain dropped three critical marks which probably cost us the game. It's a big call but i was thinking the exact same thing. He is now a senior footballer and should be bringing consistency to his game. He was pretty poor i thought.

In the end Motlop was the difference. In the mean time, while we are struggling to kick goals, our equivalent 3rd or 4th fwd in Crameri was running around as a headless midfielder. Whats the modern obsession in this game of trying to turn everyone into a midfielder? Forwards, particularly hard working ones like Crameri, can win you games.

Realistically we've limped over the line against some ordinary teams over the past month and were narrowly beaten by a team who should probably be narrowly better than us at the moment.

I'm from Geelong, grew up there. I hate the cats so much and went with my old man(dogs) and 4 Geelong mates who were all Cats. Driving back to melb was painful(this is my blood feud match) but honestly - it's a true reflection of where we are at. And we're ahead of where I expected us to be. We're still testing so many things out that it's a week to week thing. By this time next year I expect a lot of that to ironed out and the year after that it's on.

I find it funny that with all the ordinary footy we're playing... We are only 1 game behind Hawthorn at the moment....

A big issue today that I saw at the ground was that in order stop Hawkins there were huge numbers in the defensive 50, which meant time and again there was nothing to kick to forward of the ball. It was a Hawthorn style of setup but when the ball was won back in the defensive 50 they panicked and handballed too nothing or kicked blindly to an out numbered situation, unlike Hawthorn who go short until the play opens up.

No better or worse a performance than recent weeks in a lot of ways, the only difference being the result. We were due and finally got rolled for not playing to our best. Still a huge chance with 2 minutes to go if we could have managed to get the ball in the right hands and show a bit of poise. Not too worried but obviously it is disappointing to not get the points.

Geelong outmatched us all day and roved the packs well. Our tackling was poor. None played terribly, but none played terribly well either. Motlop's couple of goals the difference IMO.

Was a terribly frustrating game. Won all the clearances, tackles and inside 50's but still got beaten.

Difference was the way we delivered it into our forward line. Also, can't remember watching a forward line that was so freakin slow...led to the ball over and over again...

Got out of our forward press too easily and found space over the back a couple of times.
