If you go out and recruit a player to play a specific role, they’ve got a place locked in the side to start the season.
No you have to earn it. If he has a poor pre season are you seriously going to reward him a game just because he was recruited? Not saying he won’t just no way he’s ‘locked in’.

Being an ultra professional and a hard trainer is one of Kelly’s key qualities so that would never be a treat worry, so hence he’s a round 1 lock.

Weird. No worries Craig

What's weird? That's literally what Kelly has been described as;

Doesn’t mean he’s done enough in our pre season. And our other six or seven defenders haven’t? How is he a ‘lock’?

They brought him across to fill a specific need, in the prime age bracket, and he's a known hard worker at training.

What makes you think given all of those things we know, that he isn't a starter for R1 short of being injured?

He may well start but a lock already? Is he any harder than other defenders? Surely it’s pre season performance as well.

Hind, Stewart, Redman, Laverde, Ridley, Heppell also to consider. May play in seven man defence or one of those guys plays further up the ground although midfield is already a tight squeeze. If all players are available it’s going to be competitive for all spots. Not sure how a new 100 gamer who’s been good but nothing outstanding is guaranteed a spot and it’s only just into Feb

I thought the knock on him though was that he can’t really play anywhere else but mid as he doesn’t have the pace for HFF.
He is good around goals and can even play half back although it’s not his best spot obviously, if Snelling has enough pace to play HFF then Hobbs certainly does

I don’t think anyones suggesting he’s unlikely to start in the side. Not sure he’s a definite lock though.

I’d have all of Hind, Redman, Heppell, Ridley, Stewart and Laverde ahead of him. Not sure anyone would call their 7th defender a lock in the side.

I’m not a Kelly fan though. Think his work on smalls is overrated and his kicking is a weakness.

Best ask the coaches.

They specifically brought him across for a reason.

Yeah to compete for a spot

They don't trade in clear best-22 players from their existing club to 'compete' for a spot or be a fringe player.

They brought him over because they have a clear plan for the role he can fill in the best 22. Not the best 26.

Of course, if his form or fitness drops off, or if he was injured, he isn't so good that he's a walk-up start irrespective of anything else. But given he's noted for being at a very high standard in training, the chances of him being insufficiently physically prepared are low, and therefore the chances of him not being at the level of performance he's displayed at Adelaide, and thus the level the coaches brought him across to fill the specific role they wish him to fill, are low.

I’m guessing they’ll play 7 defenders. It’s the Cara/Rutten way to underman the forward line and get more numbers around up the ground.

So I’m guessing Heppell/Redman start on a wing and Cox/Langford start on the half forward flank and roll up after the centre bounce.

You don't pay best 22 money to a guy that you expect to play VFL. Yes he has to do the work, but so does everybody, and once he's done the work they're fully expecting him to play every week, especially since we don't have any other specialist small lockdown defenders.
He was band 5 compo so not sure he’s on anymore than the other defenders. Hopefully he kills it, I just don’t think he’s in the top category recruits that are a lock for round 1 like Stringer or Shiel.

You only have to go back to our last game to see the damage a small can do to us, Kelly is a lock and helps patch one of our biggest weaknesses in the back 6.

My best 22 for 22 would be as follows

FB: Kelly Stewart Laverde
HB: Ridley Redman Hind
C: Cox Merrett Langford
HF: Snelling Jones Shiel
FF: Hobbs Wright Stringer
R: Draper Parish Caldwell

INT: Durham Redman Heppell Perkins

Smith Sub

Can't wait to see Baldwin play in the twos, hopefully he slots in at some stage.

Bizarre to compare a band 5 compo recruit to Stringer and Shiel.

One was recruited the be a cog in the best-22. The others to be star power in the best half dozen players in the side.
I mentioned to simply state those level players are locks.
