THis was taken at the Western Oval, in 1953. Fitzroy kicked a goal from the boot of Ruthven in time on of the last quarter. It was their only score for the whole match. I've heard an unsubstantiated rumour that the Fitzroy players went out on the piss on Friday night, believing the game would be called off.

I've never seen that. Its a brilliant photograph....basically a perfect close shot of the two most famous ruckman of league history jumping into the air and jostling for position.
The amazing thing is that Farmer was only six foot five and Nicholls six foot two. These days they'd be just as likely to play on a wing.

Simply a brilliant pic. Dont know if it was a still from video or an actual photo.

Always loved this pic from the famous fog match.
Anyone recognise who it is standing with Southby ?

Skilton being told he'd just won another Brownlow

Number 38 for Fitzroy was Paul Shanahan. That was the craziest game I've ever attended. After half time, the fog rolled in from Albert Park Lake and this was the scene for the rest of the game. Shanahan was a mate for many years. We opened the bowling together in a Sunday comp. On Saturdays he would turn out for Northcote, where he played a significant role in their 1965/66 premiership, by taking 4/112, in a total of 9/514 by Essendon. Northcote won the game by scoring 5/516. Bill Lawry opened Northcote's innings and scored 282 n.o., and thus was on the ground for its entirety. The game was played over five days, at the Albert Ground.

Unfortunately, Paul died far too early, two or three years ago. At least one of his sons is a member of these boards.

Edit: How apposite that you posted a photo of Skilts as well. The best player I've ever seen - therefore my user name

On a more serious note.

Collingwood’s young star John Greening seemed to be sailing towards football greatness and a possible Brownlow Medal in 1972 when he was knocked out in one of the most controversial incidents in the VFL-AFL history. In a game against St Kilda at Moorabbin in 1972, Greening was felled by Jim O’Dea. He was in a coma for days due to severe cerebral concussion. Teammates feared he was dead when they saw him leave the ground on a stretcher in a sickening state. O’Dea was subsequently suspended for 10 weeks. Greening made a brief comeback in 1974, playing three games that season before a further six in 1975-76. But sadly he would never again reach the heights of his early years.

Not a cheap shot at Pies, and hate Cats, but this is actually a great photo showing the body language of the runners up
in a sea of blue & white.
Great photo! Complete bullshit all the Malthouse ass-tonguing that went on that afternoon - after the Cats had just won't the flag!
