Kicked 6 on a WAFL ruckmen vs a team with 14 changes and you just got blown off the park by 100+

Hes not in their class
How is that a valid point lol? He's kicked as many goals as a KPF for the 15 rounds, I'd say he's damn good and to kick the most out of any player since the bye on a ordinary team should make him look better if anything.

Aaron Naughton vs Max King. Who would you take for the next 10 years.
Right now I think Naughton is ahead. I love the way the guy plays, reminds me a bit of Brereton but better overhead, not as good on the ground. He impacts a lot more contests than King does.

For 10 years, it is a punt but I would back King has more potential. If it was going to rain for the next 10 years I'd take Naughton. I think King has that sort of body you can't put a lot of muscle on and he will always be susceptible to being moved off the ball.

A stat I threw out into the other thread- J Brown didn't break the 40 goals in a season until year 8. 8th season!

Hawkins didn't get there until year 6.

Harry McKay the same- year 6.

Naughton in year 4 (47 goals) but it helped he played 25 games. Naughton has played 81 games already.

Larkey broke 40 in year 5. Turns 24 in a couple of months- a bit older.

Trajectory wise, Max and Ben King have the jump on all of them, Ben with 47 goals last year (Season 3), and Max with 33 goals in 12 games across end of year 3 and early year 4

Both King bros have been hampered by serious injuries too, Max barely played for 2 years at 18-19, Ben now misses a year, but despite that, their early goal kicking potential places them above the others on this list.

Ben has played 53 games, Max 41, in year 4 of their careers and both have a bunch of 4-5 goal bags to their name already.

Your stats are very conveniently chosen (eg kicking 4 goals in successive games before their 40th game?). Both Kings are clearly going to be very good but why try to invent something to put them on a pedestal above all others.

Naughton's average in his 4th year would have been enough to surpass 40 goals if he hadn't played finals too, and he also played in defence for the entirety of his first season.

Put it this way- Naughton kicked the same number of goals as Ben King last year (47), difference being Naughton played 3 more games, is 7 months older and has an extra year in the AFL system, and an extra 30 games to his name (even if 15 of them were in defense).

Max kicked 38 last year, and 33 in his last 12 as of today. And he's played half the games Naughton has (41 vs 81) after missing his rookie year with injury.

Statistically and in terms of trajectory of development, both Kings clearly ahead at this point.

Of course that can change. There's no guarantees those trajectories continue, and Ben still has to recover from his ACL.

But the stats are clear in terms of which of the 3 players have the most potential based on their achievements to date. ie: the King bros.

But of course, Naughton looks a star in the making. And also has a better chance of playing in a winning team right now, which might speed his development in other ways.

I love this stat

But to be fair, Buddy played his entire rookie season so racked up loads of games at a young age

Buddy kicked 113 goals at Max's current stage of his career (year 4, 21 years old) after kicking 73 the year before as a 20 year old.

If Max can do even 75- 80% of that over the next two years- say 60 goals this year and 85 next year- I dare say everyone at St Kilda will be over the proverbial moon

Personally I feel once you hit 24, you can't use the "young" label anymore. You've entered prime age. So McKay, Curnow, Hipwood aren't really "young key forwards" anymore, they're just key forwards.

Sounds about right. In fairness to the thread title, it was started 3 years ago when they were all undoubtedly 'young'

Totally agree, they're all in their seventh seasons

And have played 70, 65 and 110 games respectively

Totally different comparison to guys who are 21 and in their 4th year in the AFL system, having played 53 and 41 games (King Bros).

The difference is in

- Body development with strength training.

- Learning to be a professional. Preparing for games, mindset, consistency and riding the ups and downs.

- In addition to the obvious- experience in games and learning your craft within the team context, and honing your individual skills over a number of years

Comparing a 24 year old in year 7 vs a 21 year old in year 4 is comparing apples and oranges.

This thread was started 3 years ago though, when they were all young.

But this explains why I'm more impressed with say, Ben King kicking 47 last year than Harry McKay kicking 58- cos Ben King has 3 less years in the system, it's a 20 year old vs a 23 year old (last year- now 21 and 24).

Yeah absolutely, I remember this discussion coming up a lot when it was almost universally agreed that McKay was on top. It's just I've recently again seen McKay, Curnow and Larkey brought up, who are all 24+ so are no longer relevant really.

Personally, I feel the new discussion should be around Kingx2, Naughton, Allen, Georgiades and Lewis.

Yup they're no longer relevant to this discussion.

IMO Naughton is clearly the best of the next bunch. He is still young but he's been dominant for so long he feels like part of the old guard too. He's in the convo for best forward in the comp, let alone young.

Kings are good too and may well overtake all of them, but haven't done it for long enough.

Best key forward in the comp (age 24 plus)

1. Buddy. He might be 35 but he's been the pre eminent big forward for 15 years. Kicked 51 goals in 18 games last year, including 2 bags of 6. Still the spearhead in a finals team and kicked 3 goals in a final last year. He's top dog until someone grabs it off him.

2. Hawkins- Mr Consistent. Has kicked 46 goals or more for TEN straight seasons and on track to make it 11

3. Cameron

4. McKay- reigning Coleman medallist with 58 goals in 19 games but needs to do it more consistently before I declare him a better player

5. Riewoldt

Putting Naughton in this conversation is premature given his best season he averaged less than 2 goals a game- the above guys (except McKay) have been doing that for 10 years and still doing it

Then best youngsters 23 and under

The under 23 group should be rated based on potential in combination with what they've achieved to date

1. Max King- as he's a better contested mark than his bro, plus right now you'd say his health is advantageous compared to Ben who will miss a year

2. Ben King

3. Daylight. With apologies to the others like Naughton, Georgiades, Allen etc, I don't see quite the same potential in those guys

I'd take Max king in a heartbeat - He's a jet
