People forget this. We are potentially drafting our next captain after Cripps/Doc. Also a player with elite fitness which will come into its own if there are further interchange restrictions.

Agree, but Cripps was a mid first round pick and we poached Doc, so leadership not always guaranteed with the top spot.

It would be nice to be a bit more competitive next year though

Fitter players, more cohesive and easier to understand game-plan, maturity of players in the 20-22 range, better on-field coaching.

Lots of ways to get better and not for one Kelly alone.

I doubt it. If we let Gold coast get Walsh he is gone for good. He is a guy that literally said the club that drafts me, has me for life. He meant it too. He is that type of character. So if we let Walsh go it is because with pick 2 and 3 we can get another gun with pick 2 and trade pick 3 to get probably pick 8 and 13 for pick 3 or something crazy desperate from Crows like that. Would not surprise one bit. Pick 2 we take best kid we rate behind Walsh and then pick 8 we possibly grab Smith and 13 another mid. I am ok with that type of strategy if it cost us giving up Walsh and next years 1st round pick only. We will get 3 gun kids rather than 2 gun kids. But have to think long and hard about it. Walsh is a super character you not just let go without really considering deeply.
Unless we use 8 to bring Sheil in with Setterfield, lol. That would be a curve ball.

For all the talk about Walsh (and I think he will be very good) Pick One is rarely the best player anyway. Other names like Smith Hately Lukosius Caldwell Rankine Rozee etc could be as good if not better. We simply don't know until they play at that level.

Premiership teams have multiple leaders. Leaders don't blame others, they find a way in key moments in games. They will others on.

If it's true that Walsh has leadership qualities & loyalty. Then all things been equal with talent, Walsh at this stage is above the list you have quoted above.

Just hold fast. We all love trades and like to think we've pulled someone else's pants down at the trade table but realistically there would be no numpties in the game. If Walsh is as good as they say then we need to hold on and get him. The thought of trading down to get multiple lesser players is madness. This is what SOS was talking about on Footy Classified earlier in the year when he said it was easy to build a list to finish mid table. Stay strong and load up with as much toip end talent as we can. I'm not sure what we give for Setterfield, maybe the pick 42 we got on Day 1. Kid was a high draft pick but has hardly played, was given the OK to look around by GWS and has nominated us. We shouldnt be paying overs for Setterfield.

I think Neale is a very very good player. Better than he's perhaps given credit for. And yes, better than Dylan Shiel.

Seems like he's off to Brisbane, though, or going nowhere. If he were in some way available and open to the Blues, would be worth going big.

Neale, like Shuey, have been criminally underrated sometimes by their own supporters. Shuey will get the accolades now but he's been terrific for a long long time .

Some Freo fans don't realise how Fyfe focused their game style is.

Put Neale in a team that believes in sharing the workload and he will kill it.

There's no way we trade pick 1 unless we have a deal lined up with the SA clubs already... Perhaps that's why we let the Crows bend us over a little bit in the Governator trade..

IMO leadership isn't our issue now. Cripps & Doc are still young. Weitering Dow Marchbank Charlie all have genuine leadership qualities. I'm not going to worry about leadership in a kid we haven't even drafted yet. IMO it's not a factor

How many elite players did the The Dogs and Richmond have in their Premiership years and how many did GWS have?
How many elite players did West Coast have this year? Two of their elites didn't even play (Natanui & Gaff)
I know we're all saying it a lot now, but it is sum of the parts business and not the parts alone.

Carlton have more than their fair share of 'potential' elite players already and will soon be adding another one, but I don't want that to become the obsession.
Clearly our fitness department wasn't up to scratch last year and by the sounds of it, neither was our coaching. There are a lot of other areas to fix, than for injecting high-priced A-Graders into the club.....but I think we may be getting there.
So true.
The only thing I would say is none of our kids are yet tracking at elite bar maybe Curnow. There's a good chance they may just end up good players yet. It'll never be easier than now to draft them and I don't think any of those clubs recruited any elite players in from other sides so I understand why SOS wants to keep 1 so badly.
