He said in an interview our 3 year offer was insulting. Who knows what that means. He got a 4 year deal from the Cats. They're not known for overpaying.

Yeah exactly, so you mentioned a big issue is he wanted a huge contract.

Maybe not though? Sounds like he was only chasing a reasonable and fair offer but we low-balled him as SOS probably wanted to trade him to get Marchbank,

Agree with all of this.

No chance Murphy doesn't play 2020 unless he decides otherwise. Club would never pay him out and cut him.
Daisy deserves another contract. It'll be offered but it will be low and cheap. His choice to accept or seek more money by retiring.
Simmo I think is near the end. He's hit that 300 milestone. He's declined this year I'm sad to say. Don't want him to retire but it looks like it may happen this year.

Re Murphy, can you imagine the club treating him that way after all he's done for us? Ex-captain and has remained loyal through the worst period of our history. Has constantly received praise from the club about his leadership and loyalty over the years and respected highly.

Daisy seems like the kind of guy who just wants to play...reckon he'd happily play even on low money for a guy like him. Even a low contract like $250k is still big money in the 'real' world and more than he'd get in a post-footy job. He may also get opportunities for a development type role in the future with the club.

i think thats correct. As good as Tuohy was, we had a plentiful supply of half back flankers at that point in time (Docherty, Byrne, Simmo, even Bryce Gibbs as needed) and to pay top dollar probably did not make sense from a salary cap rationalisation point of view

Exactly. Can't imagine the club doing that the Murph. He determines next year. No one else.

Daisy I wouldn't even pay that much TBH. They'll offer him a small 1 year deal.

Doesn't mean they cant be moved on, or shouldn't be moved on, experience or not. There are many ways we can add experience to the playing list to make up for what we would lose with these three gone.

Actually it pretty much does.

We're desperate for leadership and you want to jettison our three most experienced players in one hit?

That'd be completely irresponsible from a list management perspective.

We need to be adding to the experience we have, rather than treading water or even going backwards in that department whilst the kids develop.

All three would be a loss, none are irreplaceable.

If we traded in Cognilio, Hill and another mature player, along with our two captains turning 25, could see all three older players being let go without hurting the team too much. None play a key role in the side and we have young players nearly ready to fill the void.

Would not be against any or all three playing reserves either, if they were wanting to stay involved.

None are irreplaceable in isolation but it's a pretty big job to replace them all in the one hit.

And it's not something we should be asking of the list management team given we're crying out for experience and leadership.

For mine the only one we should be considering letting go at the end of the year is Simmo given his form is clearly on the decline.

S Hill

Still struggle to understand why we would punt on a 30 year old who can't stay on the park over the last 2 years, even with being a FA.

Unless it facilitates getting his brother?
This. It has a lot of Wells and Malceski about it. His body looks like it is failing him, I’m not sure why a team on the bottom of the ladder would be taking the risk with him. Maybe to get B Hill to nominate but than you are still going to have to pay overs for him.
I struggle to actually believe any of it.

Geelong are pretty adamant on getting two first rounders for Kelly.

Carlton:
Give Adelaide first (~12) and future second (~24)
Get B Hill and Geelong second (~36)
Carlton get a ready-made player for one pick and a downgrade, Geelong's second can be used to target other fringe players.

Freo:
Give Hill and first (~11)
Get Kelly and Carlton future second (~24)
Works well if you rate Kelly above Hill, which I do. Player upgrade for a pick downgrade.

Geelong:
Give Kelly and second (~36)
Get Freo first (~11) and Adelaide first (~12)
Geelong get their two mid first rounders, but give up a late second. Shouldn't be an issue given they'd be taking 11, 12 and 18 to the draft.

Something like that could feasibly work.
I really like this. No-one seems to be getting stiffed, everyone more or less gets what they want, provided Geelong are willing to accept picks 11 and 12 for someone who is reasonable odds to win their BNF.

You're completely ignoring loyalty and culture.

We've relied heavily on guys like Murphy and Daisy over the last few years to lead our young team and set an example.
Forcing Murphy to forfeit his last year of his contract and pushing Daisy out despite his good form this year, sets a terrible example and would send a bad ripple through the playing group.

More than happy to have them go around 1 more year...we still have a lot of young kids in the team.
Those young kids are starting to play good footy atm and will likely improve further by the end of the season and improve further again with another preseason under their belts. We now also have deluca and expecting at least one or two more good to very good players through trade. Imo it’s going to be difficult to squeeze in Daisy Murphy and Simmo next year.

Yes. Again, there are many ways we can add experience to this playing list. These three aren't the key to us being successful. Essentially all they are doing at this point is blocking the younger players from getting the experience and exposure to the top level they need. None of them are best 22 players next season, nor should they be this season.

I'd take the punt on Stephen Hill if he's not asking for the top tier in our salary structure, and will be appropriately weighted for senior appearances. If the two of them are affordable, that's smart piece of business on three year deals.

I'd suggest that's the play if Freo secure Congilio.

If Andrew Russell can work his magic - we might get a Shaun Burgoyne like return from him.

A fit S. Hill and B. Hill in navy blue? Yes. Yes please. Plausible and would improve us no doubt. Brad is 8th this year for total metres gained, which help improve our run and carry. His turnover rate is a worry (in the top 10 on average for this season), but still something I would bypass as the high disposal getters are in that top ten list. Think of your Taranto's, Boak's and Daniel's of the world. Nearly averaging 25 touches a game and can damage with his uncontested game. Stephen just turned 29 and has probably 4 years in him which if he stays fit, could really help our young side. Also a damaging player with run and carry and metres gained. Averaged 20+ from 2014-2017 and had a high rate of I50's during that time. Get him up and going and he is a damaging player.
These are the types we need to be recruiting.

If we signed those two and added Papley to that somehow, we have done very well. Still think the trio at GCS should be looked at and assessed; Fiorini, Brodie and J. Martin. Coniglio is a pipe dream. Interesting times ahead.
