"I'm hoping it is not about trading for an ex high draft pick who is a brother of a current player. That strategy has proven a liability to Carlton over the last ten years."

...How many times has this happened in the last decade?

We've gone down the ex-high draft pick with a brother with McGovern which hasn't been a complete failure. I cant think of any others.

Hollands is an interesting one - definitely one of the better flankers/mids of his draft which was more about talls than smalls - seems a better bet than a pick in the 60's or 70's at this stage.

We'll be relying on natural improvement of our playing list by the look of things. Lets hope our perennial injured players can get through the preseason and contribute for most of season 2024.
I've mentioned it before Austin is a little too conservative seems hindered, several of the opposition teams have improved their list significantly once again and our game draw ain't going to get any easier . Lets hope we do some trading

Who has significantly improves their list and at a similar outlay to what we have at our disposal?

Aside from Schultz to Pies and arguably Sydney -- lots of risk on every one of their gets -+ I'm not seeing a contender that has improved yet.

Essendon have spent 1.5m+ per season on an injury prone McKay who has never won, a flaky Gresham and a backup ruck who will delay the development of their promising naxkup.

I'm not sold the outlay on BZT and Esava is worth what Port will pay both financially and trade wise

I see a lot of money and draft capital being outlaid on nothing that is close to guaranteed.

We have a ton of improvement in our list.

Mitch was pick 43 in 2014, Jeremy was pick 44 in the 2011 rookie draft.

Perhaps the Menzels, Troy (2012 #11) and Dan (2009 #17), but that's just outside the 10 years, & we got a decent return on the way out for young Troy.

Can't remember any others, certainly not enough to suggest there was a strategy there, let alone that it was a failed strategy...

Looks like Hollands deal is a simple pick swap. Incredible deal for us. We were apparently into him for a while. He wasn't keen to leave GCS but we sold him the chance

Billing’s offered for Dow. Could be a smaller Bowes deal but I have no idea if we are interested

Clubs know our F1 is on table to go up draft order

2-3 draft picks and a couple of mature players is still the plan
I'll take a flyer on Billings.

I start off with the assumption that most recruits will end up as busts and then am pleasantly surprised at the ones that make it.

Probably not fair on the player, but much better for my psyche...
You are not alone with that wounded psyche ferris, as a lot of our recruiting (or busts) over the last 20 years or so has left many of us with paper thin psyches(?) although much improved in recent years..........:)

I take your point due to the brother ref. I meant simply ex high draft picks in my line above.

Setters, D Lang, Smedts, Henderson, L Sumner, Pickett, & Dale Thomas.

Pass marks to Marchbank and Kennedy.

I count Plowman a a fail personally as we had no backman so he got a game. I get that others think he is a stalwart player.

He hates Carlton now. I used to love him with all my heart. Now: Quite frankly: * him.

He has narcissistic personality disorder. His continual re-recruitment of players when he moves to the next club is more than just comical, it’s sad. He cannot admit when he’s wrong, ever. He is getting worse as he gets older. He will have no club to go to when he is discarded by the Saints in a few years and will die a clubless sad grumpy old man.

His bitterness toward Carlton couldn’t be any clearer.

It’s fine. Be that way. And get ****ed.
and you think SOS is Bitter?

That feels about right - and for us its less of an impost as they will use 24, 26, 27, 28 on Walter, Read & Rogers which will make 32 end up landing in a higher spot in the end anyway.
Exactly right, so even if it was hollands and pick 38 for our 26, a 12 pick downgrade, it would actually only be a 6 pick downgrade.

Where does Elijah play if we get him?

I'm hoping it is not about trading for an ex high draft pick who is a brother of a current player. That strategy has proven a liability to Carlton over the last ten years.

Can he demand a midfield rotation? Did GC say he was played out of position on the wing?

Half forward is a hard role where we need defensive pressure. Is he potentially a Owies/Cunners replacement?

Looking into 2024 it is really hard to fathom which way we want to go with our half forwards. Creative types who can score or out and out pressure forwards like Owies/Durdin pressuring rebounds and leaving goals to our talls/mids. In that last brisbane game we went with creative forwards in Motlop and Martin and Brissy walked the ball out for easy corridor central counter attacks.

Motlop and Martin can pressure but can drop that aspect at times.

Schulz can do both but we sucked a lemon there.

Reckon he plays that Rayner role.

hollands and 30 something for a pick in the 20s is a win for me

I have high hopes for hollands. You don’t get touted as a potential number 1 pick in this day and age and have no talent. Kid could be a real player if he pulls his finger out
Reckon he's got a few good mentors to run with. Seeing a group of guys with work ethic and hunger like Sammy, Crippa and Weiters will do him the world of good. Also the internal competition of having a baby bro kicking on 'ahead of him'.

I really rated Billings in his draft year, but hasn't come on at all

Would only be interested if Saints paid remaining 2 years of his contract
Billing’s is not made for finals. At 28 if he was going to he would have. I would rather have kept LOB (I think it is bad not to honour deals). Aside from one day out against Carlton where he kicked them from everywhere he struggles to execute. He is that guy who looks ama zing in the nets but can make runs

Darn good recruiter of Key position players- none better TBH. But that is where it stops. Hopeless with midfielders; And too stubborn to get deals done the right way. "Papley to carlton" What a joke.

It's all well and good to want the club to be more active at the trade table but with a finite amount of assets and cap room to work with, the chances of bringing any established star through the doors were always slim.
fomo.....as I live and breathe......
