I just don't get why we don't have a 1 year offer for him on the table, rather than let him go scott free. Worst case is we keep him for another year, give him 6 months to recover on light training, and hope our new Head of High Performance can get him right for the second half of next year.

The most important ability a player can have is availability.

Martin has missed 7, 11, 10, 13, and 21 games since joining Carlton - he has managed to play in 54 out of a possible 115 matches for us. He's also turning 30 before the start of next season. It's unlikely to get a lot better at this point.

We simply cannot keep carrying players who aren't available; we've just had a season wrecked by injury. We're going into next year with Docherty and Silvagni both rehabbing ACL injuries - that's two core players that are heavy injury risks. I don't think we can carry ANY beyond that...

I remember one of the Covid years where we played Port Adelaide at the MCG in front of no one.

Houston got the ball in the middle and drilled a pass that was about 55 metres straight to his leading forward. I’ve never forgotten it.

That said, the price being discussed of even just one first round draft pick is too high for me. Yes, he’s a very good player. Yes, he’s an All Australian. But he’s 28 years old in 2025. And as has been discussed, he likely takes away from development of Cowan or Wilson.

Draft and develop the next Houston instead.

We gave up a first rounder for Saad - which I still maintain was overs - Saad may have been a year younger 🤔

Let’s not make the same mistake again? Surely we learn!
Like Saad but he can’t defend. Now opposition coaches pull him deep and he’s done.
Credit to him, he gives his all and tries to improve but we as a club need to be smart.

I didn't like the Saad trade, part cost, but moreso the wrong timing, as we hadn't even broken into or established ourselves in the 8

I think the timing is better now for a Houston type, but cost is still an important factor

He's 27 and been All-Australian the last two years...
He's durable (barely missed a game the last three years), can kick the ball better than anyone we have in our team (only Mitch McGovern in our entire squad has better disposal efficiency) + he's averaged over 11,200 metres gained per season the last two years (more than any of our current players).

AND, it appears his preference is to play with us (best mates with JSOS)

We struggle to move the ball out of half back and indeed with our precision inside 50 (in 2023 he had 113 x Inside 50's!).

He is the type of player that would help us greatly.

No brainer.

I'd love to have Houston if we didn't have other glaring issues on our list. He's a genuine A-grader

His disposal is brilliant and he would be the cherry on top of the cake if our other needs weren't so blatantly obvious

If he does come across i hope he is allowed to play with the freedom/ creativity he currently has. There would be nothing worse than stifling his creativity because it doesn't fit with the game plan (ie. Saad)

It would be a waste of money and picks

The problem is Voss doesn’t seem to want to play anyone but his supposed top 23 and only does when his hand is forced.

Mannagh and Humphries would have been left to rot in the twos

Until such time as Voss takes the names off the magnets every week and decides the team on form and fitness we are wasting our time looking at those types

Suggested this a few weeks back. Id hold him. But others have said our staff have deemed him finished. So Id assume he's gone.

At some stage we might offer him a cheap 1 year deal

Yep he'd do it for the likes

I live near Torquay and see their young guns pretty often at my local trivia

They just get treated like regular people in Geelong, I even had a player buy something off of me on marketplace

I don’t reckon you get that luxury in Melbourne, they always seem to be ducking their heads and avoiding eye contact

Saw Gawn outside the AFLW game at GMHBA as I was leaving Chin Chin’s and when I made eye contact he immediately looked at the floor, probably keen to avoid anyone noticing him or hassling him

Think there are a lot of intangibles that Geelong provides that are unique for a Victorian based club
Mate if I was getting paid what these blokes are on to have that lifestyle and live in/near Torquay there’s no way in hell you’d catch me in Melbourne

Yeah, and most of the Melbourne based players spend time down here during summer too

It’s great here, just colder and windier which is miserable June through August but that’s their working months anyway where they’ll be in Sydney, QLD or Perth probably once a month anyway

Seems a good deal to me

Houston don't want. 4 yr big money deal for a 28 year old, Half back Flanker. You know carlton, when in doubt, go for a name.
