Yep, that is exactly how it would be. there is no conspiracy from the AFL, but yes Gill will do anything in his power to get Clarkson to GC.
Even then the soft cap can be broken there is just a tax/fine, correct me if I’m wrong. So if it was about the money or soft cap we would have just offered more.

I’m pretty sure rules changed with Covid and all clubs have to be under soft cap.

What that article omits is that the AFL also ruled that you can’t back end the deal and the average of Clarko’s deal + the Hawthorn money and Teague’s money had to be in the soft cap. They made this ruling post our offer to Clarko and we had to walk away.

Tbh this doesn't make sense to me. AFL said if Clarko coaches another team next year the Hawks payout could be spread over 2 years at $450k/yr if required, to avoid a team paying say $400k and the Hawks subsidising the difference of $500k next year.

If Carlton paid Clarko >$450k/yr, the Hawks wouldn't have to pay out anything for Clarko's contract.

I'd assume we'd have to include Clarko's salary in our soft cap as well as DTs payout next year. What is this ITK trying to say?

An 'ITK' at another Club.

It certainly can’t hurt to ask again. But he did say early and repeated often that he planed to have a year off and that is what he did. All the media speculation is just that.

Maybe just maybe he wants a year off and as Eddie said “blow a $900,000 cigar in Jeff’s face for a year.”

Pretty hard when the rules changed last Tuesday when AFL thought we’d get Clarko

So the rule that the AFL changed was that it had to be an average therefore eliminating back ended offers and our offer to Clarko.

I have a third-hand contact with Matthew Kennedy - tells me he's been talking to him in last day or so and he will be signing on for at least another year - no detail if rookie or promoted (I'd assume promoted to main list).

FWIW he apparently also thinks the new coach will be Lyon.

I was hoping Kennedy would sign on.
no non-sense team player. someone Ross will love.

One of these Gurkha Royal Courtesan Cigars should do it at $1M a cigar. o_O

With half the board departing this year, trying to overturn the rest of the board is possibly the worst thing that
Not sure why people are dismissive of the AFL blocking Clarko because they want him at the suns tbh. Has no one read The Boys Club?

The Swans literally got a ban because they got Buddy instead of the AFL backed move to GWS...

The ban may have had something to do with their inappropriate use of the COLA to facilitate the move.
They effectively trumped the AFL by using money that the AFL gave them. Not a smart move. They deserved the ban.

Yes. Also the clarification that Hawks money would go into our soft cap.

How can Hawks money go into our cap, not possible. The Hawks were just making sure we and others weren’t trying to say offer him $400,000 this year and $1,500,000 next year as Hawks would then need to pay the difference of $500,000 this year.

They didn't go outside the rules. They might've used to COLA to do it, but it wasn't illegal to do so.

Abolishing the cola was all that was needed. The ban was extra for pissing off the AFL.

The Saad vs Hind sh*t is very annoying.

At the time of the trade we were after proven experience in the back half who could be in the leadership group, we got it.

Essendon wanted to draft a player to replace the one they just lost and he seems to have turned out well so far but at the time of the draft was still an unknown to an extent.

Seems like another one of those win/win trades to me.

Also there's no guarantee we'd have drafted Hind and had the same net result with him.
He wasn't drafted, he was traced for

Simples.

There’s the Job Description.

Can you do it?

If you you need someone to hold your hand what are we paying you $400k for?
I think the issue is ‘support’ despite its use is probably not the best word. The reality is that a coach cannot get the 1 on 1 time with all the players and time with all the lines to do his job properly. So he needs assistants to reflect what he wants in game plan and other areas. They are not holding him up or supporting him but trying to act as extensions of himself.
