If he really is burnt out and his health is suffering then all the best to him but it's a difficult story to swallow.

I'll always have a lot of respect for what Geelong achieved as a team and Thomas obviously did a great job, but I have very little respect for him.

Seems to be a sore loser who can't handle defeat and is jumping off what he perceives to be a sinking ship.

Or maybe the fact that he's been the coach of Geelong for 10 years or so he feels he's had enough...

Time to move heaven and earth and bring back Damian Drum.

Drummy aint finished yet! Time to get his winning percentage into double figures..

It will be interesting to see if Geelong have a go at another flag or attempt a rebuild.

Geelong are kidding themselves if they don't rebuild. They need a clean out of the elders and an injection of youth and pace. And how long can they persist with Blake and Hawkins?

My money is on a complete rebuild. Harley went after last year, Chapman and Ling are on their last legs, and Gazza's gone north. Now the coach is gone.
They need to look at their aging list and trade the ones with a couple of years left, and look to putting in a new team of young players. We've read for the umpteenth time that the champion Magpies are younger than the Baby Bombers, and it will take a newly developed team of young players to reach their level of excellence.

chappy had his best season last year...

I'm thinking of a team that will make another go at the flag in 4 year's time. Under the circumstances, Chapman now would trade for a very good youngster.

You don't build a club by getting rid of its heart and soul. Chapman's been huge for us and to trade him would be an insult. He'll be much more important ingraining the work ethic and smarts needed in our youngsters than the draft pick that we get for him. Players like Ling, Chapman and Scarlett are untradeable. They've built the culture of the club and to trade them would do more damage than the picks are worth.

In contrast mid-range players like Hunt, Mackie, Lonergan, Mooney and Byrnes could certainly be traded for picks while they might still have some value. But you don't trade your leaders. They can have a huge impact on the future fortunes of the club even if they're not going to be playing when those youngsters come to their peaks.

In all honesty, what are contracts worth? Not the paper it's written on!
They are broken every day, Corcoran quits his job,( under contract to the Rebels) to join Essendon.
Thompson was still under contract to Geelong, has walked out..
Hinkley will break a contract (IF he becomes the new coach) and there is every chance he will.
So many contracts are broken these days..
Why even bother signing them up? They are worthless...Seems anyone can make and break them when it suits..

He worked the media perfectly by softening the blow over a few weeks, and then going to the Geelong B&F and stating that "Ablett" leaving should be seen as a good thing, when someone leaves it should be seen as a positive.

Nicely played Bomber:thumbsu:

Probably shouldn't have signed on for that long then. If he genuinely has just had enough then good on him and all the best.

Well it was only for one more year. Maybe he saw this coming thats why he had a get out clause. If he does end up coming to Essendon, don't forget he won't be coaching.

I think the doomsayers will be claiming all the 'end of an empire' hyperbole, and they might be right to a degree, but I also think this can be a positive for the GFC.

They get rid of a coach who has last the passion to do his job - win

They get a new coach in who won't have the same affinity as Bomber might have to certain senior players when tough calls need to be made about their list - win

They have been gifted a scenario which is not a 'messy' sacking and should be a pretty clean, straight forward process in appointing either one of their highly rated assistants to the top job (most likely) - win

They get a fresh perspective and leader after years and years of Bomber - (potential) win

They still have a very quality laden list to either push on with, trade away or a hybrid of the two - win

The new coach gets to formulate his plans and tackle trade week and the drafts. Granted, a little more time might have been ideal but still a win.

Good move for Bomber and the Cats I reckon at the end of the day :thumbsu:
