Bottom four next year?

AG - Jonah had at least as good a season this year as McLean did in 2008 as far as I can see mate. He came back into some good form this time around after last year, And his 2007 season was substantially better. So yes, I think Jonah would be perfectly good in that role.

I'm not saying McLean is a particularly bad player - but yes, there are at least a few others within our ranks who can do the same job more than well enough without us needing to bother finding anyone else, and Jonah is certainly one of them.

I suggest that would be one of the main reasons why the club agreed to the trade as quickly as they did.

Losing Lovett will hurt Essendon next season - no doubt, hopefully we can obtain a decent player in that trade.

Losing Lloyd and Lucas hurt our experience levels but in terms of output this was their lowest for quite some time and we still managed to make the finals.

Gumby, Hurley and Neagle need to step up to fill the void, it's a big ask - but I'm confident it can be done. Especially by Hurley.

Losing Lovett in the middle will mean that we really have to fast track the development of Kyle Reimers in a midfield role or trade for a similar player. Reimers having a big pre-season is super important as whilst he doesn't have the pace of Lovett (he's no slouch), he has the skills to replace Lovett, along with aggression (which Lovett did not have).

I definitely think they'll drop, but I don't think it will be for more than one season.

Essendon definitely have some good young guys. The problem is, whilst everyone seems to expect young guys to automatically improve in the next year, that's not always the case. It's common for players to have a good first year, and then either slide back a little bit for a year or simply stay on the same level, and then start improving again after that.

This is because they actually have to start playing every game, opposition coaches become more aware of them, they start to get better taggers/defenders, etc.

Obviously this isn't the case with every player, but when you've got a team that has a lot of young guys, you can't just say "well we were this good this year, and next year all the young guys will take another step up so we'll be even better!"

You also have to see if guys like Winderlich can have a similar season next year. He really took me by surprise this year. He was pretty much a trundler until now. So we'll see how he goes.

Essendon 2009 = Richmond 2008 ,actually the tigers even won more than 50% of their games that season unlike the bombers this season.

McLean leaving means Melbourne will be near certainties for bottom 4 again. I tipped them to climb but they have lost one of their experienced midfielders. Another kid to develop will cost them in the short term and potentially the long term.
:eek: Glad I was wrong on that.

A quick read over the thread shows that w=l and W33 will be happy with what they said about Melbourne. Most Essendon fans should unsubscribe.

Only two bottom 4's had WC, likewise Brisbane. Nearly everyone had Richmond, and a fair few had Essendon.

Freo fans must be having a laugh.

As for the Swans, I was expecting to be there abouts for the finals but I wasn't expecting the draftees such of Kennedy, McGlynn, Mumford and the younger brigade such as Jack, Hanners and Dennis-Lane to have such an impact.

Demons fans would be happy with there improvement.

I guessing Bombers fans would be pretty disappointed.

LOL at this woefully inept and wrongheaded appraisal (*cough* troll *cough*), based on utter darkness and ignorance. The bit about our ruck stocks was particularly amusing... Jamar comprehensively won the ruck duel against your mob last time out, and I'd be very surprised if he doesn't do exactly the same next time!

No doubt you've barely seen my team play - hence the terribly well-informed comments I see from you about us, but I'd at least have thought you'd have watched games involving your OWN side...

Wona33 owned with this call. I'm pretty sure Jamar smashed the living daylights out of the Jolly/Fraser combo on two seperate occasions this year.

Just thinking through the likely teams to finish in the bottom four next year. Would like to get a perspective from people regarding who will finish in that bracket. I beleive its very hard to judge the bottom four, you can go with the obvious fremantle, rich, melbourne and roos but is that likely to happen next year? Immediately i start thinking Sydney and Port, but then i have a feeling they might do ok? And every year i expect freo to get up but they dissapoint!!

Thoughts?
whatever

Damn straight mate, very well said :thumbsu:

I was very confident at the end of last season that the Russky would have a big year in 2010, and obviously time has proven me very right on that score!

Love the way this thread's turned out too... vindication is so sweet, isn't it, especially given the cringeworthy conceit we were seeing at the end of last year from certain opposition types, with all their horribly misplaced arrogance at that time.

PS- Seems like the shrinking bollocks from Sydney a couple of posts up from me here hasn't grasped reality yet though...

Some people don't have the sensory apparatus God gave a mole... has this boy even watched any of the AFL this season? How can anyone be so blind...
