Bottom four next year?

Remove this Banner Ad

Sydney won't be bottom 4. We almost certainly won't be in the 8 either (though I'm praying for another year like 2003, and when you look at it, the similarities are there), but we won't be bottom 4. Kirk is showing no signs of slowing down, Jude Bolton, Ryan O'Keefe and arguably Adam Goodes are coming off at least equal-career-best years, so they aren't slowing down either, Bird, Jack and Grundy took another step, White showed he has at least a 50-goal year up his sleeve, Goodes has shown he can play true CHF as well as any other position, Smith is settled in the backline....

....and we're losing MOL. How will we ever cope?! I'm not counting the others because Kennelly, Fosdike and Hall were all lost well before the end of the year, and we've already shown we can survive without them, while Leo and Crouch wouldn't have been in our best 22 with no injuries (Leo only barely scraped in as it was). MOL was also in far from career best form. As for Murphy, he never cracked a game. Unfortunate looking to the future, but no loss to our current side.

It's easy to look at a long retiree list and think we're screwed. It's only a little harder to actually examine the effect of these retirements and realise they won't have much influence. But evidently, it's too hard for most. If anything, we stand to gain from these retirements as the extra list space it will create means we will get an influx of new talent and depth. We played the entire year minus Kennelly and Fosdike, half the year without Hall, and almost the entire year without Leo, who only recovered from injuries in time for the last couple of games. We were stretched for depth at times this year, so compared to halfway through the year we're basically getting 3 extra players for free (I'm not including Leo because he was injured, and that's cheating, because I could name any injured player).

Bottom 4 locks: Melbourne, Richmond.
Others rounding out the bottom 4: Sydney/Fremantle/North/Port

Knew the autoresponder troll would pop up at that point somehow...

Melbourne won't finish bottom 4 next year.

Wheres your improvement going to come from ? You guys didnt even have that many injuries this year did you.

Dont give me the priority pick and first rounder as where the improvement is goign to come from, would just highlight how bad off melbourne really are

Gotta love Sydney fans.....''We wont make the 8, but we DEFINITELY wont finish in the bottom 4''

Finishing between 9th and 13th can be completely in the hands of factors outside Sydney's control, just look at this year and how Essendon were able to make the 8 with 10 wins. So Sydney might win X amount of games next year, but there is no way you can tell whether that gets them 9th or 13th, as one close game alone going either way can have a huge effect on your final position.

Ridiculous comment. Dont be deluded into thinking you couldnt be bottom 4 just because you have Brett Kirk.

Gosh, what clever and original trolling I'm seeing here...

Nah, only between a third & half of our squad out continuously throughout the season, with sometimes as many as 23 of our players sidelined... geez, we've got a well-informed little bunny here....

We only had one player play 22 games this season, we had quite a lot of injuries throughout the season. Although it didn't directly affect our results, it did severely impact our chances at winning games (before the tanking began).

Well obviously the PP and first rounder are going to assist with some of the improvement.

The returning Colin Garland will strengthen the backline along with the continued development of James Frawley, Matthew Warnock, Jamie Bennell and Jared Rivers.

We didn't get the chance to blood Sam Blease and James Strauss due to injury this year, so they'll be fit and raring to go.

Jack Grimes, Cale Morton and Jack Watts will offer some more improvement across the ground.

Brock McLean will get a full pre-season into him and hopefully be back to his best, there's also Brent Moloney who has had a very good season coming off a full pre-season for the first time in a while and of course Colin Sylvia who had his first full pre-season and produced his best season to date.

Liam Jurrah will have his first pre-season and we will also regain Austin Wonaeamirri who missed the entire season due to injuries.

There's also Aaron Davey, Brad Green, Cameron Bruce and James McDonald to oversee the development on the field of the young players we have.

So really there's quite a lot of places where the improvement will come from.

13. Fremantle
14. Port Adelaide
15. Richmond

One silly and unrealistic prediction post deserves another ;)

13 Richmond
14 Melbourne
15 Port
16 Freo

I don't mind Ports list but it's sounding like they will lose a few experienced players which may impact their performance in 2010.

Wona - will you stop spamming these forums everytime someone makes a comment about the Dees. People think Melbourne will be bottom four - I think Melbourne will be bottom four. Why wouldn't they. It takes more than just getting a bunch of kids together to make a competitive team.

FFS. Not everything is a troll.

What do you mean "based on what"? You've lost several key players including your best two forwards in MOL and Hall. You think White can do a Fevola and carry your forward line?

We lost Hall halfway through the season and won games without him and MOL wasn't exactly cranking out goals. Most of our goals, as usual, were coming from the midfield and half forward line.

I like the fact that you just mention White as our sole forward line saviour. It shows just how little you know.

You finished 12th, one above the bottom 4, and next year you'll probably finish below North and while Port are on the way down, you are too.

On the way down? We ran within a kick of Geelong and St Kilda with the team you're saying will be bottom 4 for a decade. We beat Carlton with No O'Loughlin and no Hall.

Dunno what it is about Essendon fans telling us that we're due for an eternity down the bottom of the ladder. Not everyone has to turn to shit after a premiership.

Dont know about bottom 4 but I really do think that Port Adelaide will be wooden spooners. I'm not saying they are no good, just that there is something very wrong at that club(internally) and until that is sorted, it will affect results on the field, like we saw at the tail end of this season.

Well AG, I'll also be very surprised if we were to finish bottom 4 next year with a less injury-prone squad.

Expecting us to be around 9th/10th, although I wouldn't rule out 8th with some luck going our way.

Some serious rubes revealing themselves with a bunch of the 'predictions' I'm seeing here...

Really? I'd be surprised to see the Dees finish higher than 13th. And bloody amazed to see the Tiges finish higher than that too :D

But hey, anything can happen. Who would have predicted the Premiers missing out on the top 8? No-one!
