Or we are talking to Brad and his manager to negotiate him coming back to the club.
Or we are talking to other clubs about whether they would be interested in him come trade week.
Or we are talking to the Saints about possible trade scenarios before committing to the compo
....

But we could just match and THEN do all those things.

First rule of negotiation .....never make a threat, unless you're prepared to follow that threat thru

Get caught out once ....future threats become meaningless
Exactly... even my two boys, aged 6 and 4 years old ****in know that..

They now know when mum and dad are bluffing.. because we crumbled once!.. you either follow through with the threat or you dont bother making it at all.

The fact is that the Club (wanting pick 2) and Crouch (wanting the big bucks) over-valued what they had on offer for the market.

Before the Club considers matching, it needs to have the answers to several questions - and given the time its already been since the offer - I don't think the Club is unanimous in the answers:
Clearly pick 23 isn't enough for Crouch, but do we believe the team is better with him in it? (for 5 years)
Are we willing to pay him 700,000 for 5 (supposedly)?
Are there any other suitors out there that Crouch would accept and can give us better than pick 23?
Even if we match, would he want to come back to the Crows? Does the Club lose him for nothing (ala Jack Martin)

As a frustrated supported, I wanted an answer yesterday, but I guess I'd prefer a considered response with a better outcome more.

I wanna know what's taking the club so long. They would definitely know the compo by now.

Only 2 things i can think of.....

1) We've asked for a "please explain" on the compo
or
2) We're actually considering taking band 2/3.
3) we are preparing an appeal
4) we are talking with brad and manager
5)we are running scenarios on our options if we match on salary cap
6) we haven’t actually been notified yet

These things are far more complex than most here appreciate. I have no problem with us taking some time on our approach and o don’t see that translating to us taking the compensation.

We've delayed our response because the PR spin team know they have their work cut out.

They are only human.

This will take time, some deep cuts from the thesaurus and at least two positive 'look over there' stories to accompany it in quick succession. I sense baby photos and maybe an abandoned puppy adopted from a dog shelter.

Or maybe they are now seeing what the vibe is with Brad, eg can he come back to the club realistically or are bridges burned.

Shouldn't matter. We would get more than that for Brad in a trade to another club. (should easily net a pick between 10 and 20).

Just match and sort the trading out later.

Nope, because we don't want to pay him the "just short of band 1" deal the Saints have put down. We will take 23. Let's not forget Lethlean is ex AFL House... we have been stitched up boys and girls.

But Adam Kelly said that 20 odd wasn't enough and we would do what's required to be better compensated. We haven't been stitched up, we've not understood the system properly whereas Saints did. We talked tough and they have responded by taking us somewhere we didn't know existed and certainly don't like it now that we're there.

1 more year for Mookay outta do it!

That's a pretty naive statement because if there's not other suitors around prepared to pay what he wants it's either us or Saints.

Lack of communication from the club allows for negative slander on us to run rampant. Wish we actually pushed back on these arseholes.
We were the ones talking we wouldn't be happy unless we got pick 2, to then accept a 2nd rounder makes us look like absolutely wimps.

And people say we should take Hately in the PSD, like anyone would believe we'd do that, they'll call our bluff and we'd roll over immediately.

You know how dire things are when St Kilda is a better run club...

I wonder if Adelaide have asked the AFL not to disclose the compensation offered to the public due to the sensitive nature of recent media comments by both clubs.

After all, the compensation pick is the property of AFC and they may want details withheld until they make their decision.

Not sure what the AFL position is on the public disclosure of FA compo. Anyone know the answer?

Historically clubs don't find out until they've chosen to not match. Apparently that's changed this year, but there's been no official notification. Not that you'd necessarily exoect the AFL to formally announce it.

Good way to get into even deeper crap. What we match and he says OK i'm staying and we have a big long term contact for a "B Grade" mid? Or we match and St Kilda walk as well as Crouch and we are left with nothing at all?

Be kind of nice to have some idea of what the landscape looks like before committing. As bad as it sounds pick 23 may yet be the best option.

If I were the saints and the crows asked this question, I’d say no you keep him if you planning to match, we’re not trading. The crows have already shown they are just talk and shown their hand. Crows will then rollover and say we asked them and they said they wouldn’t trade so we have no choice but to accept compo.

or keep brad.

Whether or not brad wants to stay shouldn't impact the decision to match or not. Band 3 is not enough - we match. If Brad then wants to stay, fine its over. If not, we try to work out a trade (with the Saints or anyone else with something worth trading). If a trade can't be worked out, brad stays or he goes into the draft. Letting him walk to the draft has about as much value to the club as pick 30 this year. Plus then someone has to use their draft pick on him. Maybe we'd get him with our Atkins compo seeing as noone wants to give anything for him

The AFL disclose the FA compo to the club which is losing the FA player, so that they can make up their minds whether or not to match.

The AFL does not disclose the FA compo to anyone else (i.e. the media), until the FA player's club decided whether or not to match (or if they time out after 3 days of indecision).

If "not understood the system properly" means "don't have inside knowledge" then yeah, I agree.

Have we shown we are just talk? That's only true if we don't match

And you have no guarantee any of those clubs take Keath. Your gambling on an assumption and usually, that assumption is flat out wrong.

In a game where the difference between a premiership and being a loser comes from maximising the resources available to a club, I would much rather the pick upgrade and the pick in the 40s over getting nothing and the asinine belief that makes you tough.

There were times to make a stand, Dangerfield (or at least wait longer before pulling the trigger), Gibbs, Greenwood (because he stated he wished to stay). Brad is another because we hold every card.
We folded last year, what do the Saints think we will do this year? We've built a rep.

We have got picks coming out of our arse. The pick we received is worth **** all.

Whats going to help us winning a flag more, foregoing a shitty pick or striking maximum value when push comes to shove?
