I'd be staggered if we didn't match. I suspect its in the Crows best interests to wait as long as possible before matching it. You might as well see what plays out over the next 3 days. Saints cant really maneuver any other trade while they wait on the Crows so they are somewhat stuck in time limbo. In the meantime we can speak to other clubs and gauge interest in a trade deal. We can also see what plays out with Treloar and Co. Really there is no benefit to making a quick announcement.

Other than it showing that we walk the walk, and will not remain as a pushover club

BREAKING NEWS: I'm taking over the club. I'm matching the offer. Then i'm trading Brad and a later pick to GC for pick 5, heck I'll even chuck in Mackay (he'll be better for them than Atkins!). Then trading Pick 5 and a later pick to Sydney for pick 3. They can have Poholke too. I'm taking Hollands at 1 and Thilthorpe are 3.

Lessssssss go!

If "not understood the system properly" means "don't have inside knowledge" then yeah, I agree.

We didn't understand enough to realise that they could structure a deal that wouldn't get us near band 1 and that we'd also not be prepared to match. The out we always had was it was too much and long and just missed band 1. An understandable retreat. Now we're ****ed.

Would we have targeted a free agent if we weren't trying to protect our Brad Crouch bounty?

Keeping brad on the contract he was offered is the least bad option of those we have currently, assuming St Kilda are true to their word of being unwilling to trade for him.

I find it bizarre that a club would make a relatively low contract offer to a restricted free agent if they're not willing to back it up by trading. Honestly, what's their play here if we match and they refuse to trade? PSD not really a threat with any substance since we have pick 1. He can go in the main draft and they MIGHT be able to get him with pick 15 (which might be more like 20) - but in that case why not just trade that pick for him and make a certainty of it?

I really hope the delay is because we're talking to Brad to get him to stay. If it really is only $600k per year then I'd be perfectly happy to sign him for that x 5 years. His injury history doesn't bother me so much considering it's been a variety of injuries, including a broken foot and broken leg which are just bad luck, his groin issue in 2018 which doesn't seem to have been an issue since. If it was a recurring thing like continual, repeated hamstring strains or multiple ACL's etc then I'd be more concerned.

I doubt it. At this stage of a rebuild you're targeting a younger age profile. The players you're looking to recruit aren't free agents yet. FA is for when you're through the painful stage and are topping up for a shot at the flag.

What do they lose?

They have 0 risk here. They make the bid and either we match and they lose nothing, or we don't match and they get their man. When there is 0 opportunity cost then of course you shoot your shot even if it only has a 5% chance of succeeding (but given how soft the Crows are, it's a lot higher than 5%)

It's the Crows that have played this poorly by letting St Kilda dictate terms.

why didn't you just get the saints to offer more then we would have had pick 1 and 2

no

If it was simply 4 years at 600K then yeah, but its not, it would most likely play out 5 at 750k so no that is not a good situation. And well does Crouch actually want to stay?

Yes but do you want to put someone on a 4 year contract who decides "oh well I'm signed up now I'll just cruise for 4 years and bank $600-$700k a year." If Crouch is genuinely fine to stay and is a professional then by all means sign him up but the club needs to find out where he really sits.

Crouch is a competitive beast, I don't see him as a risk of coasting.

The thing I love most about the club is how decisive our employees are.

Always getting on the front foot, speaking and acting promptly in our best interests. Never slow to react, never silently pushed out of the narrative, never making the club look like a joke.

Who gives a shit if he wants to stay? He isn't going to risk the draft. Even if he does risk the draft we just pick him up all over again.

Sorry, what are you talking about?

If you have to resort to making things up, just stop talking.

AFL.com reporters don’t have any special access, where on earth did you pluck that idea from?????

if that’s what your argument is based on (and it seems it is), go stand in the corner for a while and be embarrassed

I’ve addressed your creativity elsewhere

Do you have any thoughts on who the most reliable sources of FA info are, or do you just like to throw mud at everything? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Literally everyone is saying the same thing since the offer was lodged so it’s interesting that you don’t think it’s genuine.

that’s such an easy match for us, it’s not funny

there is zero chance that STK lodges $650 x 5, and we choose not to match. ZERO

Why haven’t we matched yet if it’s such an easy decision?

exactly

if it were true, Brad wouldn’t waste his time signing the offer sheet and STK wouldn’t waste time submitting it

They submitted it, it clearly isn’t Band 1 because we would have let him go by now if it was, he signed it.

I’ll let your comment about Brad being undisputedly a Band 1 player slide because it’s natural for supporters in our position to want to talk up the value of someone we’re trying to sell. Just doesn’t appear as though any other AFL club values him that way in an open market unfortunately.

I agree but the point is you make damn sure all is good before just holding someone here otherwise we end up in another Gibbs type situation with a relatively highly paid guy getting paid to be in the SANFL.
