We've delayed our response because the PR spin team know they have their work cut out.

They are only human.

This will take time, some deep cuts from the thesaurus and at least two positive 'look over there' stories to accompany it in quick succession. I sense baby photos and maybe an abandoned puppy adopted from a dog shelter.

'Gun Midfielder re-signs with club, says 'I never want to leave'

'Today the AFC and David Mackay agreed to a 3 year contract extension that will see the gun midfielder play out his career in Adelaide colours'

treloar telling collingwood he's staying. suck a big fat dick st kilda.
Interesting.

means the suns chances of getting him have totally evaporated too... they had cery little chance to begin with but a glimmer of hope..

maybe they will turn their attention towards brad now if the saints and crows cant work things out.

Clearly this isn’t as straight forward as the media are making out, otherwise we would’ve heard officially by now whether we were matching or not. Must be negotiations going on behind the scenes and the media are just guessing different scenarios the longer it plays out to keep generating clicks.
Serious? This is us working out what we are going to do after the big talk. They would be shitting themselves at the moment how its going to look if we dont match.

Then he stays with us?

Or should we start letting all our best mids go for 2nd round picks?

Brad is easily worth a first rounder.
Yes but do you want to put someone on a 4 year contract who decides "oh well I'm signed up now I'll just cruise for 4 years and bank $600-$700k a year." If Crouch is genuinely fine to stay and is a professional then by all means sign him up but the club needs to find out where he really sits.

How is that different to any other player?

Good way to get into even deeper crap. What we match and he says OK i'm staying and we have a big long term contact for a "B Grade" mid? Or we match and St Kilda walk as well as Crouch and we are left with nothing at all?

Be kind of nice to have some idea of what the landscape looks like before committing. As bad as it sounds pick 23 may yet be the best option.

Keeping brad on the contract he was offered is the least bad option of those we have currently, assuming St Kilda are true to their word of being unwilling to trade for him.

More like we're looking at his offer and know that we're not getting band 1 but also don't want to match. We were very strong until the offer arrived and we aren't keen to follow through. I think there's a lot of nervous people delaying the inevitable. There might be some bargaining going on, but the offer is the offer and the band will be the band.

Haha

...so the Crows banished the awful Pick 2 forever... because it was haunted.

Yep, we're deciding which shit sandwich to eat

Ya reeeeally gotta milk every last second when you're reacting to stuff constantly, really workshop all the possible excuses internally and align on which one will have the shortest news cycle.

they picked the week, Melbourne Cup, US Civil War, UK lockdown...

It’s a pretty sobering reality that our best midfielder can only get $600k a year in an open auction. Shocking that we actually won 3 games...

****ing Trigg, we‘re three mids short, that’s why Brad does it alone

I doubt it, but we tried it last time with Dangerfield and a few other trades.

It's always about the sum of the trade period, not any individual deal

It’s about a body of work

You know how dire things are when St Kilda is a better run club...

Long time ago I worked with someone very high up at the Saints, very high. Inspiring is not a word I would use.

For instance, he got all the finance team together, told us this particular EOFY was very important and told us in no uncertain terms to get it done quick and right, so while we pulled all-nighters, pleaded with banks, wrestled auditors...

...he flew to England to watch the Ashes, first week of July.

Pick 23 for Treloar? Pies really want him gone. Would likely pay 200k of his wages to get him out.

Yeah bringing in a player that has been soundly rejected by his clubs leadership group (reportedly).

That'll be great for our cultural issues!

I'd be staggered if we didn't match. I suspect its in the Crows best interests to wait as long as possible before matching it. You might as well see what plays out over the next 3 days. Saints cant really maneuver any other trade while they wait on the Crows so they are somewhat stuck in time limbo. In the meantime we can speak to other clubs and gauge interest in a trade deal. We can also see what plays out with Treloar and Co. Really there is no benefit to making a quick announcement.
Realistically our worse case scenario looks good to me. And that is we keep Brad on on a fair contract that contains a lot of built in triggers that cover any injury concerns the medico's might have, or any drug fears the board has and he is incentivised to play well. How is that not a win?

$600 for 4 years, ok whatever, but if it ends up being over $700,000 for 5 years with easy triggers, I'm not sure we should match that even if we are on the losing side of the deal right now.

Even if we show how tough we are by matching and having him to stay, we're still left with a 5 year, $700,000+ plus contract for Brad Crouch that could see us losing for the next half a decade if we're not a top 4 side in that time, if we don't get midfield time into other players and if we arrive at our next window having to replace Brad Crouch anyway.

I'm not sure Brad is the type of player that would thrive onfield while being on a very comfortable long term deal, I'd need to be in the club and know what he really brings to the table to know if he's worth that risk.

I don't think there's any great shame in announcing we were after pick 2, it didn't work, but what is the alternative, we don't talk about pick 2 and still don't get it, we're still in the same position.

Brad was clearly happy to go to the Suns last year
